Kniha se zabývá dějinami dvou nejvýznamnějších exilových nakladatelství posrpnového období: Indexu, sídlícího v Kolíně nad Rýnem, a Sixty-Eight Publishers, působícího v Torontu. Jádrem studie je pohled na jejich "paralelní životopis": obě nakladatelství si byla v mnoha ohledech podobná, měla však své koncepční preference, jejich autorské zázemí se většinově lišilo, z menší části se však shodovalo, takže vznikaly konkurenční vztahy, někdy překvapivě vyostřené (zvláště v případech vydávání děl autorů žijících v Československu). Autor nahlíží na činnost obou nakladatelství v kontextu literárního života českého exilu, okrajově si všímá i dalších nakladatelství, kulturních časopisů apod. Pramennou základnu mu poskytuje jeho mnohaletý výzkum tohoto tématu, dále archiv nakladatelství Index, uložený v Ústavu pro soudobé dějiny AV ČR, fond torontského nakladatelství, uložený v Hoover Institution v kalifornském Stanfordu, a konečně archiv Společnosti Josefa Škvoreckého v Praze.
