Shropshire (Slow Travel) - Marie Kreft

Part of Bradt''s distinctive, award-winning series of ''Slow'' travel guides to UK regions, this new, thoroughly updated third edition of Shropshire (Slow Travel) remains the only standalone guidebook to provide in-depth coverage of England''s largest landlocked county. Although often overlooked, Shropshire is remarkable - "the nearest earthly place to paradise," according to author P.G. Wodehouse. The county has been touched by every era of history the British Isles have known: Bronze Age people, Iron Age tribes, Romans, Saxons and Normans all left their marks in hillforts, earthworks, roads, churches, place names and legends, while Shropshire''s position at the once-turbulent Anglo-Welsh borders has left a legacy of castles, castle ruins and fortified manor houses, all carrying stories of clashes and feuds. In the north, flat, fertile plains plus meres and mosses give way to hills, valleys and woodland in the south. In the Shropshire Hills (''quintessential Shropshire''), Church Stretton was popular with Victorians for its Alps-like air and is an ideal walking base for the Stretton Hills and the Long Mynd. Bishop''s Castle is home to a ''poetry pharmacy'' and the country''s oldest working brewery. Scotland's North Highlands (Slow Travel) - Emma Gibbs

Scotland''s North Highlands (Slow Travel) is the latest title in Bradt''s series of distinctive, widely acclaimed ''Slow'' travel guides to local UK regions. Written by a northern Scotland specialist who edits the award-winning JRNY Travel Magazine, this guidebook provides greater detail than any other to the whole of northern Scotland - roaming far beyond the increasingly popular 516-mile North Coast 500 (NC500) driving route. Coupling a wide, personal selection of places to explore with focused advice on travel practicalities, Scotland''s North Highlands (Slow Travel) encourages visitors to adopt a leisurely approach designed to tease out the region''s many special qualities - and contribute positively to local communities. In the far northern reaches of Scotland, Sutherland, Caithness and Ross-shire are regions that, by their very nature, demand to be taken slowly. Single-track roads dominate, skirting lochs and winding up and over moorland and mountains carpeted with blanket bog, settlements are few and far between, and you''ll often feel outnumbered by sheep as yet another flock ambles across a road leading to a crumbling castle, old fishing port or alluring ancient site. Part of Bradt''s distinctive, award-winning series of ''Slow'' travel guides to UK regions, the new, thoroughly updated second edition of Cheshire (Slow Travel) celebrates this charming, popular English county. Written with intimate detail and insider tips by two authors raised in Cheshire, it remains the only standalone guidebook to provide in-depth coverage of the county. Already renowned for an abundance of black and white timbered buildings, Cheshire was put firmly on the map in the 2000s thanks to then-resident stars David and Victoria Beckham. The county confounds expectations with its surprisingly varied and dramatic landscapes, ranging from the Cheshire Plain to the wild hills and windswept moors of the Pennines and Peak District in the east, and the upstanding sandstone ridges of the west - not to mention the moody coastal marshes of the Wirral Peninsula, flanked by the major estuaries of the rivers Mersey and Dee, which flow into the Irish Sea. The Iron Men of Shropshire - Norman Pagett

Though the Industrial Revolution was born in Shropshire, iron-working techniques had been known for millennia. However, it was an expensive undertaking in real terms, needing large amounts of wood to make the charcoal to produce the iron and objects that had to be beaten out in a blacksmith’s forge. Then one man made the breakthrough that kickstarted the Industrial Revolution: making iron in vast quantities using coke instead of charcoal. In 1709 Abraham Darby built his pioneering coke-fired blast furnace to produce cast iron at Coalbrookdale.Abundant iron and coal brought together men with a common purpose. Amongst them, Wilkinson and Watt developed the technology of the modern steam engine. Richard Trevithick built his viable locomotive here, whilst Abraham Darby II supplied the iron rails for it. Hazledine’s ironworks at Shrewsbury built the Ditherington Flax Mill, still standing today as the grandfather of all skyscrapers. Thomas Telford became surveyor of public works here, and built forty bridges in the county, churches, major canal infrastructure, and the London to Holyhead road.It was the technology and vision of these men that set the groundwork for modern mass production, which built our cities and all the complexity that sustains them, and us.

Slow Knowledge and the Unhurried Child - Alison Clark

This book explores the relationship with time in early childhood by arguing for the valuing of slow pedagogies and slow knowledge. Alison Clark points to alternative practices in Early Childhood Education and Care that enable a different pace and rhythm, against the backdrop of the acceleration in early childhood and the proliferation of testing and measurement. Diverse approaches are explored to enable an ‘unhurried child’ and less hurried adults. Slow Knowledge and the Unhurried Child is divided in three parts. Part 1, Reasons to be slow, looks at the pressures in Early Childhood Education and Care to speed up and for children to be ‘readied’ for the next stage. The book then explores different relationships with time for young children and educators. Part 2, Slow pedagogies and practices, explore some of the forms slow practices can take including outdoors, in the studio, in everyday routines, through stories, in pedagogical documentation and in ‘slow’ research. Part 3, Moving forward, shows what a ‘timefull’ approach to ECEC can look like, whilst debating the challenges and possibilities that exist. The book serves as a catalyst for urgent discussion about the need to slow down in early childhood education and teacher education and explores ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Slow Harms and Citizen Action - Veronica Herrera

Environmental degradation is not new, yet the impact of pollution on human health and wellbeing is growing. According to the World Health Organization, 12.6 million people die annually from living or working near toxic pollution, amounting to one-quarter of global deaths. Ninety-two percent of these deaths occur in middle or low-income countries, where the majority of the global population lives. For the millions of communities around the world where pollution is a slow moving, long-standing problem, residents born into toxic exposure often perceive pollution as part of the everyday landscape, particularly in low-resource settings. Local communities may also be both victims of pollution and complicit in perpetrating it themselves. When and how do people mobilize around slow harms? Moreover, when does citizen action around slow harms unlock policy action? In Slow Harms and Citizen Action, Veronica Herrera chronicles the struggle against toxic exposure in urban Latin America. Comparing advocacy movements for river pollution remediation in the capital regions of Argentina, Colombia, and Peru, Herrera explains how citizen-led efforts helped create environmental governance through networks that included impacted communities (bonding mobilization) and resourced allies (bridging mobilization). Through bonding and bridging mobilization, citizen advocacy for slow harms activated the state''s regulatory capacity. Moreover, ... Unknown localization key: "more"
