LOST: Back to the Island - Emily St. James, Noel Murray
A comprehensive critical companion to the blockbuster TV show LOST, revisiting its core themes, lore, and impact on culture For fans of one of the most successful and highly discussed shows in recent memory, LOST: Back to the Island is both a delightful time capsule and a rousing work of entertainment criticism. Before it premiered in the fall of 2004, LOST looked doomed to be an expensive, disastrous plane crash of a TV show. Instead, LOST was a massive hit, debuting with the biggest audience for a new drama on ABC in over a decade, reaching heights of over 23 million viewers at its peak, and holding on to a hefty fan-base for its entire six-season run. The elements that made the series seem like a boondoggle proved, instead, to be a big part of its appeal. Audiences loved the exotic island setting, became invested in the morally compromised characters, and feverishly tried to unravel the show’s many mysteries. In LOST: Back to the Island, TV critics and veteran LOST recappers Emily St. James and Noel Murray revisit what made the show such a success and an object of enduring cultural obsession, twenty years later. Through essays, episode summaries, and cultural analysis, they take us back to the island and examine LOST’s lasting impact—and its complicated, sometimes controversial legacy—with a clear-eyed and lively investigation.

Dear Mr Murray - David McClay
The publishing house of John Murray was founded in Fleet Street in 1768 and remained a family firm over seven generations. Published to coincide with this ''remarkable achievement'' and in the anniversary year, Dear Mr Murray is a collection of some of the best letters from the hundreds of thousands held in the John Murray Archive. They reveal not only the story of some of the most interesting and influential books in history but also the remarkable friendships - as well as occasional animosities - between author and publisher, as well as readers, editors, printers and illustrators.Despite the incredible number of letters that were retained by the Murray family, some failed to arrive, others were delayed and some barely survived, but longevity added to the reputation and fame of John Murray and a correspondent in Canada who addressed his letter merely to ''John Murray, The World-wide famous Book & Publishing House, London, England'' as early as 1932 could be confident that his letter would arrive.Intended to entertain and inspire, and spanning more than two hundred years, Dear Mr Murray is full of literary history and curiosities: from Charles Darwin''s response to the negative reviews of On the Origin of Species to Adrian Conan Doyle challenging Harold Nicolson to a duel for insulting his father in the press; from David Livingstone''s displeasure at the proposed drawing of a lion to represent his near-death encounter in Missionary Travels to William Makepeace Thackeray apologising for his drunken behaviour; from Byron berating John Murray for being fooled by his girlfriend''s forgery of his signature to the poet James Hogg so desperate for money that he claims he won''t be able to afford a Christmas goose; and from Jane Austen expressing concern about printing delays to Patrick Leigh Fermor beseeching Jock Murray not to visit him until he''d completed A Time of Gifts. Complemented by illustrations and reproductions of letters and envelopes, this is the perfect gift for book lovers everywhere.

On Democracies and Death Cults - Douglas Murray
From the Sunday Times No. 1 Bestselling AuthorIn On Democracies and Death Cults, bestselling author Douglas Murray argues how no less than the future of the Western World is at stake in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Drawing from intensive on-the-ground reporting in Israel, Gaza and Lebanon, Murray presents a compelling case that places the latest violence in its proper historical context. He takes readers on a harrowing journey through the aftermath of the 7th October massacre, piecing together the exclusive accounts from victims, survivors and even the terrorists responsible for the atrocities. On Democracies and Death Cults illustrates how Israel's commitment to fundamental Western values - capitalism, individual rights, democracy, and reason - has made it a beacon of progress in a region dominated by authoritarianism and extremism.Murray contrasts Israel's principles with the ideology of Hamas, which openly proclaims its love of death over life. If left unchecked, Murray argues, this misplaced Western sympathy could embolden forces that seek to undermine democratic values and perpetuate a culture of violence. Deeply reasoned, clear-eyed and grounded in fact, On Democracies and Death Cults is a gripping and essential read for all who seek to understand the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its implications for the future of democracy - and for the world itself.

"LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY!" LUKE 11:1"Jesus never taught His disciples how to preach, only how to pray. He did not speak much of what was needed to preach well but spoke much of praying well. To know how to speak to God is more important than knowing how to speak to man. Not power with men, but power with God is the first thing. Jesus loves to teach us how to pray. What do you think, my beloved fellow disciples? Would it not be just what we needed, to ask the Master to give us a month-long course of special lessons on the art of prayer? As we meditate on the words He spoke on earth, let us yield to his teaching, in the fullest confidence that, with such a teacher, we shall make progress. Let us take time not only to meditate but to pray. To busy ourselves at the foot of the throne, and be trained in the work of intercession." -Andrew Murray"With Christ in the School of Prayer" offers a structured series of 31 short, concise, practical, and powerful lessons on prayer to fill the listener''s heart with a hunger for God''s presence.
Vznikla nová utopická ideologie společenské spravedlnosti, jež nesmiřitelně prosazuje radikální přestavbu společnosti na základě domnělých práv rasových a sexuálních menšin (i většinových žen).

Máme-li i tentokrát zvítězit nad fašismem a komunismem, musíme demaskovat vnitřního nepřítele. Není to snadné, pseudoprogresivistické hnutí "uvědomělých (woke)” bojůvek používá proměnlivý jazyk utopické "absolutní rovnosti rasových a sexuálních menšin” a svou novořečí dokáže posluchače často zmást. Padají sochy zakladatelů americké svobody a hrdinů občanské války. Absurdní obvinění bílé rasy z vrozeného nevyléčitelného rasismu ohrožuje legitimitu a soudržnost multietnického národa.

The War on the West - Douglas Murray
In The War on the West, international bestselling author Douglas Murray asks: if the history of humankind is one of slavery, conquest, prejudice, genocide and exploitation, why are only Western nations taking the blame for it?It's become perfectly acceptable to celebrate the contributions of non-Western cultures, but discussing their flaws and crimes is called hate speech. What's more it has become acceptable to discuss the flaws and crimes of Western culture, but celebrating their contributions is also called hate speech. Some of this is a much-needed reckoning; however, some is part of a larger international attack on reason, democracy, science, progress and the citizens of the West by dishonest scholars, hatemongers, hostile nations and human-rights abusers hoping to distract from their ongoing villainy. In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows the ways in which many well-meaning people have been lured into polarisation by lies, and shows how far the world's most crucial political debates have been hijacked across Europe and America. Propelled by an incisive deconstruction of inconsistent arguments and hypocritical activism, The War on the West is an essential and urgent polemic that cements Murray's status as one of the world's foremost political writers.

Legionnaire - Simon Murray
''One of the greatest adventure stories in years.'' – Chris Patten ''The drama, excitement and colour of a good guts-and-glory thriller.'' – Dr. Henry Kissinger The French Foreign Legion – mysterious, romantic, deadly – is filled with men of dubious character, and hardly the place for a proper Englishman just nineteen years of age. Yet in 1960, Simon Murray traveled alone to Paris, Marseilles, and on to Algeria to fulfill the toughest contract of his life: a five-year stint in the Legion. Along the way, he kept a diary.Legionnaire is a compelling, firsthand account of Murray''s experience with this legendary band of soldiers. Subjected to brutal sergeants, merciless training methods and barbaric punishments – all in the hostile, sun-baked North African desert – Murray and his fellow men were pushed to breaking point, and beyond.Sixty years on, it remains a remarkable account of one of the most notorious military groups, a tale of true adventure and one man''s determination never to surrender.

Podivná smrt Evropy - Douglas Murray
Douglas Murray brilantně líčí příběh masové imigrace do Evropy - její počátky v poválečném nedostatku pracovní síly, její zintenzivnění při slučování rodin a konečně humanitární ospravedlňování otevřených hranic. Vyčerpaný a historickou vinou kolonialismu a rasismu posedlý Západ není schopen hájit občanské svobody a práva proti nábožensky sebejisté kultuře islámu, jež nezná odluku církve a státu. Murray vykresluje dramaticky narůstající spor většinové společnosti s intelektuální elitou, která hodlá evropský lid vyměnit. Důkladně analyzuje její akademické šibolety, vytáčky a lži i její ideál "morálně nadřazeného univerzálního lidství" bez kulturního rozlišení, utopickou vizi nesoudržné, multietnické společnosti pouhých lidských práv.

Nová brilantná a provokatívna kniha jedného z najvýznamnejších svetových politických spisovateľov. Douglas Murray v knihe Vojna proti Západu ukazuje, koľko ľudí s dobrými úmyslami sa nechalo oklamať pokryteckou a nedôslednou protizápadnou rétorikou.

A truthful look at today''s most divisive issues'' – Jordan B. Peterson ''[Murray’s] latest book is beyond brilliant and should be read, must be read, by everyone'' – Richard Dawkins Are we living through the great derangement of our times? In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive. One of the few writers who dares to counter the prevailing view and question the dramatic changes in our society – from gender reassignment for children to the impact of transgender rights on women – Murray’s penetrating book, now published with a new afterword taking account of the book''s reception and responding to the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests, clears a path of sanity through the fog of our modern predicament.

The War on the West - Douglas Murray
SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER‘The most important book of the year’ Daily MailThe brilliant and provocative new book from one of the world’s foremost political writers‘The anti-Western revisionists have been out in force in recent years. It is high time that we revise them in turn…’In The War on the West, international bestselling author Douglas Murray asks: if the history of humankind is one of slavery, conquest, prejudice, genocide and exploitation, why are only Western nations taking the blame for it? It’s become perfectly acceptable to celebrate the contributions of non-Western cultures, but discussing their flaws and crimes is called hate speech. What’s more it has become acceptable to discuss the flaws and crimes of Western culture, but celebrating their contributions is also called hate speech. Some of this is a much-needed reckoning; however, some is part of a larger international attack on reason, democracy, science, progress and the citizens of the West by dishonest scholars, hatemongers, hostile nations and human-rights abusers hoping to distract from their ongoing villainy. In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows the ways in which many well-meaning people have been lured into polarisation by lies, and shows how far the world’s most crucial political debates have been hijacked across Europe and America. Propelled by an incisive deconstruction of inconsistent arguments and hypocritical activism, The War on the West is an essential and urgent polemic that cements Murray’s status as one of the world’s foremost political writers.

love lay down beside me and we wept - Helen Murray Taylor
love lay down beside me and we wept is Helen Murray Taylor’s lyrical memoir of devastating mental illness. Helen Murray Taylor was finding her feet as a young doctor and trying to maintain some semblance of a life in the shadow of a punishing schedule when she witnessed a horrific road traffic accident. The impact of this fatal collision caught Helen off guard and had terrible repercussions. Both her career and her mental health took a battering. After a succession of other distressing events left Helen emotionally shattered and seriously depressed, she was admitted to a psychiatric ward and sectioned under the Mental Health Act. At her lowest, she almost succeeded in taking her own life. love lay down beside me and we wept sprang from these difficult times, from Helen’s months on the ward and the psychological upheaval of being restrained against her will, and from the challenge of being a doctor turned patient, but also from the moments of pure comedy and unexpected comradeship that she encountered there. This is a profoundly moving and masterful account of one woman''s physical and psychological breakdown, it''s a tribute to the love that supported her through it, and it''s an offering to the reader who might find comfort or understanding in this story.

O demokracii a kultu smrti - Izrael a budoucnost civilizace - Douglas Murray
října 2023 vtrhl smrtící kult Hamásu do izraelských vesnic.

Trainspotting - Murray Smith
In 1996 Trainspotting was the biggest thing in British culture. Brilliantly and aggressively marketed, it crossed into the mainstream despite being a black comedy set against the backdrop of heroin addiction in Edinburgh. Produced by Andrew Macdonald, scripted by John Hodge and directed by Danny Boyle, the team behind Shallow Grave (1994), Trainspotting was an adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s barbed novel of the same title. The film is crucial for understanding British culture in the context of devolution and the rise of ‘Cool Britannia’. Murray Smith unpicks the processes that led to Trainspotting’s enormous success. He isolates various factors – the film’s eclectic soundtrack, its depiction of Scottish identity, its attitude to deprivation, drugs and violence, its traffic with American cultural forms, its synthesis of realist and fantastic elements, and its complicated relationship to ‘heritage’ – that make Trainspotting such a vivid document of its time. Although it heralded a false dawn for British film-making,Trainspotting is, Smith concludes, both authentically vernacular and yet transnational in its influences and ambitions. In his afterword to this new edition, Murray Smith reflects on the original film 25 years after its release, and its 2017 sequel T2: Trainspotting also directed by Boyle. Smith also considers Danny Boyle''s subsequent directorial career, with highlights including Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony.

''The true and fascinating story of Easter Island and its amazing statues'' KEN FOLLETTWhere did they come from? How did they get there? Why did they carve the island’s colossal iconic statues – and how? What happened to the civilisation they created? These are just a few of the questions about Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, that have puzzled generations.Europeans first encountered the Islanders in the early eighteenth century, bringing back astonishing tales from one of the most remote inhabited places on Earth. They told fantastic stories of lost continents, cannibalism, giants and aliens. Thor Heyerdahl claimed that the island was discovered by pale-skinned sailors from South America, ignoring the rightful claims of the greatest explorers the world has ever known. Recently, the idea that Islanders cut down all the trees, causing mass starvation and social collapse, has been espoused by scientists, broadcasters and politicians. Now, in archaeologist Mike Pitts’s superb investigation, Island at the Edge of the World, he provides authoritative new insights into what really happened.Using the latest scientific and archaeological research, plus a huge range of historical accounts, Pitts builds a fascinating new portrait of the Islanders’ story. In particular, Pitts revives the life work of Katherine Routledge, who spent sixteen months on the island in 1914-15, surviving revolution and war, assembling a priceless but largely ignored archive of excavations and interviews - and whose legacy reveals the rapacious interference that spawned generations of false histories. Many questions still remain, but this is the most compelling and comprehensive account yet published of the extraordinary story of Easter Island.

Until one morning his routine is interrupted because a body has been found in the harbor with clear signs of foul play. Patric Provost was from one of the long-established families on the island of Belle-Île, Breton’s biggest and most famous island. Provost owned and operated a company dealing in an island delicacy: the famous Belle-Île-sheep. As Bretons say, the sheep season themselves while they’re eating, grazing on salty, iodine-rich meadows, full of wild herbs, directly by the ocean. In Dupin’s culinary ranking, this lamb comes right behind entrecôte. And that’s saying something.Dupin has barely stepped foot on the utopia-like island before it comes to light that Provost was not well liked. And someone was blackmailing him for one million euros, the deadline for payment the night before Provost’s body was caught on the buoy. Everyone on the island has a motive. Any one of them could be the killer.
