účinkují: vypravěč Shakespearových příběhů: Martin Stránský historický a kulturní kontext: Milena Steinmasslová úryvky divadelních her: Igor Bareš, Jana Stryková, Veronika Khek Kubařová, Michal Balcar průvodní slovo: Jitka Škápíková „Autorka hry převyprávěla tak, aby oslovily především starší školní děti.
Czech immigrants traveled to the unknown beyond the Atlantic in several waves. Some came to America in search of religious and political freedom, while others simply sought a better life in a country of great opportunities. Today we know that without their involvement, independent Czechoslovakia would hardly have come to exist, and without the assistance of the United States, the Czech lands would have twice recovered from totalitarianism only with great difficulty. In Bohemian Stories, Renáta Fučíková presents a graphic journey through the history of Czechs in the United States, capturing the bonds between the two countries through their lived experience. Short texts and vivid illustrations detail the fates of the cartographer Martin Bohemus, the rebel Vojta Náprstek, the Freethinker Ladimír Klácel; reveal the stories of politicians like Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Anton Čermák and Madeleine Albright; and celebrate the accomplishments of astronauts James Lovell, Eugen Cernan and John Blaha. Readers join the Czech immigrants as they settle the barren prairies of the Midwest and help build the streets and neighborhoods of Chicago and New York, and experience the success of artists and athletes who found a new home in the United States.

Právě proto vznikla tato kniha! Mnohdy svými příběhy berou dech. A díky kontextu, do kterého jejich osudy zasazuje autorka celého projektu Renáta Fučíková, se nám před očima odvíjí ucelený obraz toho, zač a jak musely ženy kdy bojovat, aby dnes mohly žít podle svých představ.

Franz Kafka - Člověk své a naší doby - Renáta Fučíková, Radek Malý
Výpravná kniha o nejslavnějším pražském rodákovi Franzi Kafkovi přibližuje jeho život a dílo všem, kdo chtějí podrobněji poznat jeho svět. Ožívá v ní svět pražské německy psané literatury, svět jeho zájmů, rodiny a přátel a také svět prazvláštních příběhů, nad kterými si dodnes lámou hlavu čtenáři i odborníci na slovo vzatí. Autorem textu je dvojnásobný držitel ocenění Magnesia Litera, básník, překladatel a germanista Radek Malý. Ilustrace vytvořila Renáta Fučíková, přední česká ilustrátorka a držitelka řady tuzemských i zahraničních cen.

The Arden Encyclopedia of Shakespeare
The Arden Encyclopedia of Shakespeareâ ™s Language is the first comprehensive account of Shakespeareâ ™s language to use computational methods derived from corpus linguistics â “ methods of choice for todayâ ™s lexicographer. These first two volumes in this growing encyclopedia together provide a non-etymological A-Z â ˜dictionaryâ ™ that works through the frequency of word usage to reveal patterns of meaning and usage, and to examine what Shakespeareâ ™s words actually do in the environments they inhabit. All words from all of Shakespeareâ ™s plays are included â “ not just words judged to be â ˜difficultâ ™ â “ only leaving out proper names. The dictionary also covers words whose first known use is in Shakespeare (e.g. ear-piercing).Entries focus on the use and meanings of Shakespeareâ ™s words, both in the context of what he wrote and in the context in which he wrote.Every word is compared with a 321 million word corpus comprising the work of Shakespeareâ ™s contemporaries.Internal comparisons reveal how Shakespeareâ ™s language varies dynamically across his works, showing, for example, whether certain words are peculiar to tragedies, comedies or histories, or to certain social groups, and whether they have a particular stylistic flavour.Definitions are kept clear and concise, making the dictionary an ideal accessible reference.Words are classified according to their frequency band: how often they occur, in comparison to other words in Shakespeareâ ™s plays. Entries for words that occur more than 50 times contain charts showing the wordâ ™s frequency associations with:- Comedy, history or tragedy (and whether this differs from other playwrights);- Male or female characters (and whether this differs from other playwrights);- Particular social status groups of characters (and whether this differs from other playwrights)- Particular genres in published writing of the time (e.g. literary, religious, administrative, informational, instructional). The volumes together establish in detail both what is unique about Shakespeareâ ™s language and what Shakespeareâ ™s language meant to his contemporaries, including, for example, their attitudes towards love or death, what it meant to be Welsh or a harlot, or even the significance of eating fish as opposed to beef. This innovative reference resource is essential for English, Drama and Linguistics libraries, offering Shakespeare scholars and advanced students of Shakespeare and early modern literature fresh linguistic insights into Shakespeareâ ™s rich language.

â œ[A] page-turning storyâ â “ Times Literary Supplementâ œEye-openingâ â “ Michael Billingtonâ œA detailed and highly compelling story that involves so much more than bricks and mortar.â â “ The Stratford HeraldIn the wide realm of Shakespeare worship, the house in Stratford-upon-Avon where William Shakespeare was born in 1564 â “ known colloquially as the â ˜Birthplaceâ ™ â “ remains the chief shrine. Itâ ™s not as romantic as Anne Hathawayâ ™s thatched cottage, itâ ™s not where he wrote any of his plays, and thereâ ™s nothing inside the house that once belonged to Shakespeare himself. So why, for centuries, have people kept turning up on the doorstep? Richard Schoch answers that question by examining the history of the Birthplace and by exploring how its changing fortunes over four centuries perfectly mirror the changing attitudes toward Shakespeare himself.Based on original research in the archives of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon and the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, and featuring two black and white illustrated plate sections which draw on the wide array of material available at the Folger Shakespeare Library and the Victoria and Albert Museum, this book traces the history of Shakespeareâ ™s birthplace over four centuries. Beginning in the 1560s, when Shakespeare was born there, it ends in the 1890s, when the house was rescued from private purchase and turned into the Shakespeare monument that it remains today.

Yet most readers and audiences believe the couple’s strong love would overcome these differences were it not for Iago, who sets out to destroy Othello. Shakespeare in Bloomsbury - Marjorie Garber
The untold story of Shakespeareâ ™s profound influence on Virginia Woolf and the rest of the Bloomsbury Group  ⠜A spirited dance of minds.â â ”Chris Vognar, Boston Globe  For the men and women of the Bloomsbury Group, Shakespeare was a constant presence and a creative benchmark. Not only the works they intended for publicationâ ”the novels, biographies, economic and political writings, stage designs and reviewsâ ”but also their diaries and correspondence, their gossip and small talk turned regularly on Shakespeare. They read his plays for pleasure in the evenings, and on sunny summer afternoons in the country. They went to the theater, discussed performances, and speculated about Shakespeareâ ™s mind. As poet, as dramatist, as model and icon, as elusive â œlife,â Shakespeare haunted their imaginations and made his way, through phrase, allusion, and oblique reference, into their own lives and art.  This is a book about Shakespeare in Bloomsburyâ ”about the role Shakespeare played in the lives of a charismatic and influential cast, including Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Vanessa Bell, Clive Bell, Roger Fry, Duncan Grant, Lytton Strachey, John Maynard Keynes and Lydia Lopokova Keynes, Desmond and Molly MacCarthy, and James and Alix Strachey. All are brought to sparkling life in Marjorie Garberâ ™s intimate account of how Shakespeare provided them with a common language, a set of reference points, and a model for what they did not hesitate to call genius. Among these brilliant friends, Garber shows, Shakespeare was in effect another, if less fully acknowledged, member of the Bloomsbury Group.

Shakespeare and Brecht - Stephen Unwin
This practical guide uncovers the roots of Brechtâ ™s lifelong obsession with Shakespeare and makes the case for reading the two together today. By connecting these two great playwrights, Stephen Unwin imagines new possibilities for Brechtian productions of Shakespeare and outlines practical suggestions for how to stage such productions.Drawing on directing and performance experience in over 60 productions, Unwinâ ™s knowledge of Brecht provides students, teachers, and practitioners with practical exercises for use in the classroom and rehearsal room. The book charts a chronology of Brechtâ ™s engagement with Shakespeare before delving into his core theories and practices which detail a Brechtian approach to reading, performing and staging Shakespeare that is still pertinent today. Unwin also provides an in-depth look at five of Shakespeareâ ™s plays through Brechtâ ™s own words and imagines a Brechtian staging for them. In simple, non-theoretical language Shakespeare and Brecht reveals how Brecht can help us understand Shakespeare, but also how an understanding of Shakespeare can help explain Brecht for a new chapter of Brechtian Shakespeare in the 21st century.

Macbeth - William Shakespeare
The authoritative edition of Macbeth from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers. In 1603, James VI of Scotland ascended the English throne, becoming James I of England. London was alive with an interest in all things Scottish, and Shakespeare turned to Scottish history for material. He found a spectacle of violence and stories of traitors advised by witches and wizards, echoing James’s belief in a connection between treason and witchcraft. In depicting a man who murders to become king, Macbeth teases us with huge questions. Is Macbeth tempted by fate, or by his or his wife’s ambition? Why does their success turn to ashes? Like other plays, Macbeth speaks to each generation. Its story was once seen as that of a hero who commits an evil act and pays an enormous price. Recently, it has been applied to nations that overreach themselves and to modern alienation. The line is blurred between Macbeth’s evil and his opponents’ good, and there are new attitudes toward both witchcraft and gender. The edition includes: -Freshly edited text based on the best early printed version of the play -Newly revised explanatory notes conveniently placed on pages facing the text of the play -Scene-by-scene plot summaries -A key to the play’s famous lines and phrases -An introduction to reading Shakespeare’s language -An essay by a leading Shakespeare scholar providing a modern perspective on the play -Fresh images from the Folger Shakespeare Library’s vast holdings of rare books -An up-to-date annotated guide to further reading Essay by Susan Snyder The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, is home to the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare’s printed works, and a magnet for Shakespeare scholars from around the globe. In addition to exhibitions open to the public throughout the year, the Folger offers a full calendar of performances and programs. For more information, visit Folger.edu.

Shakespeare Was a Woman and Other Heresies - Elizabeth Winkler
An “extraordinarily brilliant” and “pleasurably naughty” (André Aciman) investigation into the Shakespeare authorship question, exploring how doubting that William Shakespeare wrote his plays became an act of blasphemy…and who the Bard might really be.The theory that Shakespeare may not have written the works that bear his name is the most horrible, unspeakable subject in the history of English literature. Scholars admit that the Bard’s biography is a “black hole,” yet to publicly question the identity of the god of English literature is unacceptable, even (some say) “immoral.” In Shakespeare Was a Woman and Other Heresies, journalist and literary critic Elizabeth Winkler sets out to probe the origins of this literary taboo. Whisking you from London to Stratford-Upon-Avon to Washington, DC, she pulls back the curtain to show how the forces of nationalism and empire, religion and mythmaking, gender and class have shaped our admiration for Shakespeare across the centuries. As she considers the writers and thinkers—from Walt Whitman to Sigmund Freud to Supreme Court justices—who have grappled with the riddle of the plays’ origins, she explores who may perhaps have been hiding behind his name. A forgotten woman? A disgraced aristocrat? A government spy? Hovering over the mystery are Shakespeare’s plays themselves, with their love for mistaken identities, disguises, and things never quite being what they seem. As she interviews scholars and skeptics, Winkler’s interest turns to the larger problem of historical truth—and of how human imperfections (bias, blindness, subjectivity) shape our construction of the past. History is a story, and the story we find may depend on the story we’re looking for. “Lively” (The Washington Post), “fascinating” (Amanda Foreman), and “intrepid” (Stacy Schiff), Shakespeare Was a Woman and Other Heresies will forever change how you think of Shakespeare…and of how we as a society decide what’s up for debate and what’s just nonsense, just heresy.

Shakespeareâ
A new account of Shakespearean tragedy as a response to life in an uncertain worldIn Shakespeareâ ™s Tragic Art, Rhodri Lewis offers a powerfully original reassessment of tragedy as Shakespeare wrote itâ ”of what drew him toward tragic drama, what makes his tragedies distinctive, and why they matter. After reconstructing tragic theory and practice as Shakespeare and his contemporaries knew them, Lewis considers in detail each of Shakespeareâ ™s tragedies from Titus Andronicus to Coriolanus. He argues that these plays are a series of experiments whose greatness lies in their authorâ ™s nerve-straining determination to represent the experience of living in a world that eludes rational analysis. They explore not just our inability to know ourselves as we would like to, but the compensatory and generally unacknowledged fictions to which we bind ourselves in our hunger for meaningâ ”from the political, philosophical, social, and religious to the racial, sexual, personal, and familial. Lewisâ ™s Shakespeare not only creates tragedies that exceed those written before them. Through his art, he also affirms and invigorates the kinds of knowing that are available to intelligent animals like us. A major reevaluation of Shakespeareâ ™s tragedies, Shakespeareâ ™s Tragic Art is essential reading for anyone interested in Shakespeare, tragedy, or the capacity of literature to help us navigate the perplexities of the human condition.

Here will be an old abusing of God s patience and the King s English. The Merry Wives of Windsor is the only Shakespeare play named entirely after female characters and his only comedy set in England. These features underscore some of its most immediately appealing qualities -- its contemporary realism; its depiction of everyday life; its interest in status and gender; and the language and physicality of its comedy. This edition s introduction focuses on these elements of Merry Wives, setting out their historical contexts but also thinking about what they offer audiences and readers today. It addresses the place of the play within Shakespeare s career and canon and the enduringly popular figure of Falstaff, before thinking about its generic peculiarities as a mixture of city comedy and domestic comedy. The edition gives readers a rich breadth of historical context and real-life examples through which to understand and appreciate the text. Shakespeare and Science - Tom Rutter
As a figurehead for the literary humanities, and a dramatist whose plays feature fairies, ghosts, and spirits, Shakespeare may not be the first author that comes to mind when thinking about science. Tom Rutter shows, however, that in his plays and poetry Shakespeare made detailed use of the knowledge and theories of the cosmos, the natural world, and human biology that were available to him. These range from astronomical and anatomical ideas derived from medieval scholars, Islamic philosophers, and ancient Greek and Roman authorities, through to the challenges issued to those earlier models by more recent figures such as Copernicus and Vesalius. Shakespeare s treatment of these materials was informed by the poetic and dramatic media in which he worked; the dialogic nature of drama enabled an approach that could be provisional, exploratory, and tolerant of uncertainty and contradiction. Shakespeare made the early modern playhouse a venue for the production of scientific understanding through performance, illusion, and the creative use of space. As well as surveying current scholarship that contextualizes Shakespeare s work in relation to histories of meteorology, matter theory, humoral physiology, racialization, mathematics, and more, Shakespeare and Science offers detailed original readings of a variety of texts including the Histories, Hamlet, Antony and Cleopatra, Othello, King Lear, The Tempest, the Sonnets, and Lucrece. It also makes extensive reference to works by Shakespeare s near-contemporaries such as Robert Recorde, William Fulke, Juan Huarte, and Thomas Elyot. Its four chapters focus on astronomy and meteorology, matter, the body, and mathematics. Rutter s overall approach is informed by recent studies that interrogate science as a concept, and that question both the boundary between literature and science and the idea of a seventeenth-century scientific revolution .

Troilus and Cressida - William Shakespeare, Lillian Groag
Lillian Groag presents a new version of Troilus and Cressida that will resonate with contemporary audiences. One of the most obscure plays in Shakespeareâ ™s canon, Troilus and Cressida may also be the Bardâ ™s darkest comedy. Exploring some of the events of Homerâ ™s Iliad, the play juxtaposes the carnage of the Trojan War with a love story between its two titular characters. Lillian Groagâ ™s translation brings this ancient world to modern audiences. Replacing the archaisms with new and accessible phrasing, Shakespeareâ ™s lines regain their meaning and humor in the twenty-first century. This translation illuminates Troilus and Cressida as one of Shakespeareâ ™s funniest, saddest, and most bitterly modern plays. Henry IV Part I - William Shakespeare
What is honour? A word. What is in that word honour ? What is that honour ? Air. A history play that combines a coming-of-age narrative with a tale of power, rebellion, friendship, and betrayal, Henry IV, Part I has been a perennial favourite from Shakespeare s time to the present. What has ensured its popularity is above all the towering figure of Falstaff, Shakespeare s greatest comic creation. The ebullient, unabashedly pleasure-seeking and brilliantly witty character has proved as irresistible for audiences as he was for his protégé, Prince Hal. This introduction discusses their relationship within the framework of the play s historical, cultural, and performative setting. At the same time, it explores the question of why the play has proved so enduringly attractive to audiences today. Botanical Shakespeare - Gerit Quealy, Sumie Hasegawa Collins
A captivating, beautifully illustrated, one-of-a-kind color compendium of the flowers, fruits, herbs, trees, seeds, and grasses cited in the works of the world’s greatest playwright, William Shakespeare, accompanied by their companion quotes from all of his plays and poems. With a foreword by Dame Helen Mirren—the first foreword she has ever contributed. In this striking compilation, Shakespeare historian Gerit Quealy and respected Japanese artist Sumié Hasegawa combine their knowledge and skill in this first and only book that examines every plant that appears in the works of Shakespeare.Botanical Shakespeare opens with a brief look at the Bard’s relationship to the plants mentioned in his works—a diversity that illuminates his knowledge of the science of botany, as well as the colloquy, revealing his unmatched skill for creating metaphorical connections and interweaving substantive philosophy. At the heart of the book are portraits of the over 170 flowers, fruits, grains, grasses, trees, herbs, seeds and vegetables that Shakespeare mentions in his plays and poems. Botanical Shakespeare features a gorgeous color illustration of each, giving a face to the name, alongside the specific text in which it appears and the character(s) who utter the lines in which it is mentioned. This fascinating visual compendium also includes a dictionary describing each plant—such as Eglantine, a wild rose with a slight prickle, cherished for its singular scent, superior to any other rose; and the difference between apples and apple-john—along with indices listing the botanical by play/poem, by character, and genus for easy reference, ideal for gardeners and thoughtful birthday gift-giving.This breathtaking, incomparable collection of exquisite artwork and companion quotes offers unique depth and insight into Shakespeare and his timeless work through the unusual perspective of the plants themselves.

Opening up a new window to see Shakespeare’s words in a different light and gathering his intentions in a simple, clear way, this book presents the Cue Scripts from the Comedies in Shakespeare’s First Folio. The book invites readers to approach Shakespeare’s texts the way his actors would have – not studying the complete text and drawing conclusions from it, but working from a Cue Script, where all the lines for a particular character are written, with just a two- or three-word cue as to when they should speak. As an actor himself, Shakespeare knew that his actors would have little time to do more than learn their lines for the next imminent performance – for this reason, he placed in the first lines of every Cue Script a range of crucial information on the character’s motives and intentions. Studying the cues and following the playwright’s clues opens up a whole new understanding of the roles, and provides a way of approaching a play that is authentic, quick, and creates an impactful performance. Examples of Cue Script scenes along with a summary of the various clues that were written to help the original actors are included in the book.A practical and unique resource for students, teachers, performers, and directors alike, Shakespeare’s First Folio Cue Scripts – Comedies helps demystify Shakespeare’s texts, provides new approaches to scene studies, and sheds new light on Shakespeare’s most popular works. To access the additional downloadable Cue Scripts and other materials, visit www.resourcecentre.routledge.com/books/9781032698823.

This Is Shakespeare - Smith
A THE TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR 2019 The best introduction to the plays I ve read, perhaps the best book on Shakespeare, full stop Alex Preston, Observer It makes you impatient to see or re-read the plays at once Hilary MantelA genius and prophet whose timeless works encapsulate the human condition like no others. A writer who surpassed his contemporaries in vision, originality and literary mastery. Who wrote like an angel, putting it all so much better than anyone else.Is this Shakespeare? Well, sort of.But it doesn t really tell us the whole truth. So much of what we say about Shakespeare is either not true, or just not relevant, deflecting us from investigating the challenges of his inconsistencies and flaws. This electrifying new book thrives on revealing, not resolving, the ambiguities of Shakespeare s plays and their changing topicality. It introduces an intellectually, theatrically and ethically exciting writer who engages with intersectionality as much as with Ovid, with economics as much as poetry: who writes in strikingly modern ways about individual agency, privacy, politics, celebrity and sex. It takes us into a world of politicking and copy-catting, as we watch him emulating the blockbusters of Christopher Marlowe and Thomas Kyd, the Spielberg and Tarantino of their day; flirting with and skirting round the cut-throat issues of succession politics, religious upheaval and technological change. The Shakespeare in this book poses awkward questions rather than offering bland answers, always implicating us in working out what it might mean. This is Shakespeare. And he needs your attention.
