The Debs of Bletchley Park - Michael Smith

For Winston Churchill the men and women at Bletchley Park were ‘the geese the laid the golden eggs'', providing important intelligence that led to the Allied victory in the Second World War.At the peak of Bletchley''s success, a total of twelve thousand people worked there of whom more than eight thousand were women. These included a former ballerina who helped to crack the Enigma Code; a debutante working for the Admiralty with a direct line to Churchill; the convent girl who operated the Bombes, the top secret machines that tested Enigma settings; and the German literature student whose codebreaking saved countless lives at D-Day.All these women were essential cogs in a very large machine, yet their stories have been kept secret. In The Debs of Bletchley Park author Michael Smith, trustee of Bletchley Park and chair of the Trust''s Historical Advisory Committee, tells their tale. Bletchley Park and D-Day - David Kenyon

The untold story of Bletchley Park's key role in the success of the Normandy campaign Since the secret of Bletchley Park was revealed in the 1970s, the work of its codebreakers has become one of the most famous stories of the Second World War. But cracking the Nazis’ codes was only the start of the process. Thousands of secret intelligence workers were then involved in making crucial information available to the Allied leaders and commanders who desperately needed it.  Using previously classified documents, David Kenyon casts the work of Bletchley Park in a new light, as not just a codebreaking establishment, but as a fully developed intelligence agency. He shows how preparations for the war’s turning point—the Normandy Landings in 1944—had started at Bletchley years earlier, in 1942, with the careful collation of information extracted from enemy signals traffic. This account reveals the true character of Bletchley's vital contribution to success in Normandy, and ultimately, Allied victory.

The Secret Life of Bletchley Park - Sinclair McKay

Bletchley Park has played a vital role in British history. This Victorian country house in the Buckinghamshire countryside was was where one of the war’s most famous – and crucial – achievements was made: the cracking of Germany’ s 'Enigma' code in which its most important military communications were couched. It was home to some of Britain’s most brilliant mathematical brains, such as Alan Turing, and the scene of immense advances in technology – indeed, the birth of modern computing. The military codes deciphered there were instrumental in turning both the Battle of the Atlantic and the war in North Africa. But, though plenty has been written about the boffins, and the codebreaking, fictional and non-fiction – from Robert Harris and Ian McEwan to Andrew Hodges’ biography of Turing – what of the thousands of men and women who lived and worked there during the war? What was life like for them – an odd, secret territory between the civilian and the military? This is the first oral history of life at Bletchley Park, an amazing compendium of memories from people now in their eighties – of skating on the frozen lake in the grounds (a depressed Angus Wilson, the ... Fear and Loathing at Goodison Park - Louis Foster

Fear and Loathing at Goodison Park chronicles the David Moyes era at Everton, when a fallen giant of the English game fought to re-establish itself among football''s elite. With relegation dogfights making way for Champions League qualification and the first cup final since 1995, David Moyes'' tenure was underpinned by stability and a hopefulness that success would soon return to the blue half of Merseyside. It was, however, a period when the notion of success was redefined, not only for Everton but within the game as a whole. With the financial gulf widening in a league deluged by an influx of foreign investment and media conglomerates, Moyes'' Everton became synonymous with operating on a shoe-string budget, in an era of multi-million -pound transfers and bloated wages. With billionaire takeovers reshaping the landscape of English football forever, the people''s club''s hopes of breaking through football''s glass ceiling faded, leaving only fear and loathing at Goodison Park.

Archaeological Mitigation at Magna Park, Lutterworth, Leicestershire - Stephen Morris

Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) carried out a programme of archaeological investigations at Magna Park, Lutterworth, Leicestershire between June 2020 and March 2021. A total of just over 12ha was examined as part of the archaeological works, which were separated into eight mitigation areas. The archaeological works revealed the second largest middle Bronze Age cemetery yet found in the county, comprising a group of 30 cremation burials. A further two contemporary cremation burials located 500m away were likely part of the extended funerary landscape. The area of investigation is located along the present A5 which follows the Roman road of Watling Street. This major routeway was hugely influential to the development of the settlements at the site from the middle/ late Iron Age throughout the Roman period and into the medieval period. The site saw four separate farmsteads established in the 1st century BC, and two additional settlement sites established in the early Roman period. These were all gradually abandoned before the late 4th century AD. The presence of a possible shrine attached to one of the settlement areas is suggested by finds of nine silver coins dating from the 1st and early 2nd centuries, as well as brooches and other objects. Two ... Empty Cradles (Oranges and Sunshine) - Margaret Humphreys

THE BOOK THAT EXPOSED THE HEARTBREAKING SCANDAL OF BRITAIN''S FORGOTTEN AND ABUSED CHILD MIGRANTS - now a film, Oranges and Sunshine, starring Emily Watson. In 1986 Margaret Humphreys, a Nottingham social worker, investigated a woman''s claim that, aged four, she had been put on a boat to Australia by the British government. At first incredulous, Margaret discovered that this was just the tip of an enormous iceberg. Up to 150,000 children, some as young as three years old, had been deported from children''s homes in Britain and shipped off to a ''new life'' in distant parts of the Empire, right up until as recently as 1970.Many were told that their parents were dead, and parents were told that their children had been adopted. In fact, for many children it was to be a life of horrendous physical and sexual abuse far away from everything they knew. Margaret and her team reunited thousands of families before it was too late, brought authorities to account, and worldwide attention to an outrageous miscarriage of justice.

With a mixed media technique including collage and painting, each spread reveals the variety of activity and moods that he observed at different times and different locations in the park. Chiltern creates the most beautiful editions of the WorldÂ’s finest literature. Your favourite classic titles in a way you have never seen them before ; the tactile layers, fine details and beautiful colours of these remarkable covers make these titles feel extra special and will look striking on any shelf. This book has matching lined and blank journals (sold separately). They make a great gift when paired together but are also just as beautiful on their own. Mansfield Park By Jane Austen tells the story of Fanny Price, a frail, quiet young woman who has none of the high spirits or wit of Elizabeth Bennet or Marianne Dashwood. Reared from the age of ten among wealthy relatives, Fanny is an unobtrusive presence in the household at Mansfield Park, useful and agreeable to everyone and steadfast in her secret affection for her cousin, Edmund Bertram. FannyÂ’s manner contrasts sharply with the livelier, sometimes careless behavior of her cousins and their friends. Only Edmund spends time with the gentle Fanny, although his own affections have been captivated by the sophisticated Mary Crawford. With FannyÂ’s uncle, Sir Thomas Bertram, away on an extended stay in the West Indies, the cousins and their friends ... Unknown localization key: "more"
