První vydání Angelovy knihy spatřilo světlo světa v Londýně v roce 1763 a text byl francouzský. Domenico Angelo (1717-1802) byl jedním z nejvěhlasnějších mistrů šermu osmnáctého století a jeho kniha patří k nejproslulejším metodikám šermu všech dob. Úspěch École des Armes byl takový, že druhé vydání vytiskl S. Hooper již v roce 1765; tentokrát byl francouzský text doplněn souběžně textem anglickým. Třetí vydání následovalo roku 1767. Angelovi se dostalo nevídané cti, když text jeho knihy použili Denis Diderot a Jeana de Ronda d'Alembert, kteří sestavili dílo nazvané Encyclopedie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des science, des artes et des métiers, neboli Encyklopedie čili naučný slovník věd, umění a řemesel. Text Domenica Angela byl vybrán do Encyklopedie pro heslo Šerm. Domenicův syn Henry "starší", ve snaze přiblížit otcovo dílo svým žákům, přesvědčil přítele, malíře Thomase Rowlandsona, aby původní dílo přeložil do angličtiny a pod názvem The School of Arms jej v roce 1787 vydal v kvatrovém formátu. Z tohoto textu vychází náš překlad, ale s původními 47 nádherně kolorovanými rytinami. Angelova Škola šermu vychází jednoznačně z francouzských praktik, často také z konkrétních textů (kompilace byly tehdy stejně běžné jako dnes), ale samozřejmě také z jeho vlastní praxe.
