Spoločensko-kritický román Demokrati (1934 - 1938) je najrozsiahlejšia próza spisovateľa, básnika a prekladateľa Janka Jesenského. Na príbehu nerovného ľúbostného vzťahu medzi mladým okresným úradníkom doktorom Landíkom a kuchárkou Hankou autor zobrazuje spoločenské vzťahy a politickú situáciu v malom slovenskom meste tridsiatych rokov 20. storočia. Zarážajúco aktuálna epicko-satirická analýza parlamentnej demokracie z pera jej principiálneho obhajcu je jedným z najsilnejších diel slovenskej literatúry. Janko Jesenský sa narodil 30. 12. 1874 v Turčianskom sv. Martine ako potomok šľachtického rodu Jesenských s predikátom z Horného Jasena. Po ukončení právnických štúdií a zložení advokátskej skúšky si v roku 1905 založil v Bánovciach nad Bebravou samostatnú advokátsku prax. Po vypuknutí prvej svetovej vojny narukoval k trenčianskemu pluku, no čoskoro ho ako "pansláva" uväznili a v roku 1915 prevelili na ruský front. Krátko nato prebehol, pripojil sa k československým légiám a neskôr sa zúčastnil na bojoch proti boľševikom aj na legendárnej "sibírskej anabáze". Stal sa podpredsedom Československej národnej rady a svoje literárne schopnosti osvedčil aj prácou na slovenskej prílohe vojenského časopisu Čechoslovan. Po skončení vojny sa v roku 1919 vrátil do ČSR a aktívne sa zapojil do politického života i literárneho života novej republiky. Dvakrát zastával funkciu župana, roku 1929 sa stal viceprezidentom krajinského úradu. V tom čase publikoval množstvo neobyčajne populárnych humoresiek, noviel a poviedok. V rokoch 1930 - 1939 bol predsedom Spolku slovenských spisovateľov. Svoj ostrý nesúhlas s rozbitím Československej republiky vyjadril podpisom protestného memoranda, ktoré 14. marca 1939 odoslali bývalí legionári poslancom Slovenského snemu. Na existenciu Slovenského štátu potom reagoval sériou politických básní a pamfletov, ktoré sa po ilegálnom vyvezení do Londýna stali súčasťou Československého vysielania BBC a neskôr vyšli knižne pod názvom Na zlobu dňa. Janko Jesenský zomrel 27. 12. 1945 v Bratislave.

V novembri 1989 bol pod vplyvom Nežnejrevolúcie prepustený z väzenia. Do novej československej vlády Mariána Čalfu bolnominovaný za opozíciu ako I. podpredseda vlády. Zodpovedal za legislatívu, vrátaneprípravy zákonov, ktoré zakotvili demokratický politický systém v Československu. Patrímedzi iniciátorov vzniku Kresťanskodemokratického hnutia na Slovensku. Na zakladajúcomsneme hnutia v Nitre vo februári 1990 bol zvolený za jeho predsedu. V tejto funkcii zotrvalaž do októbra 2000. Po parlamentných voľbách v júni 1990 sa stal I. podpredsedom vládySlovenskej republiky a od apríla 1991 až do nových parlamentných volieb v júni 1992 bolpredsedom vlády Slovenskej republiky. Od júna 1992 bol poslancom Národnej radySlovenskej republiky za Kresťanskodemokratické hnutie. V apríli 1997 bol zvolený zapodpredsedu Európskej únie kresťanskej demokracie. V rokoch 1998-2002 bol ministromspravodlivosti Slovenskej republiky. Od januára 2003 pôsobí ako advokát v Bratislave.
