Pozoruhodný cestopis téměř románové povahy. Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, významný novošpanělský literát, dílo sepsal v květnu roku 1690 na základě ústního vyprávění Alonsa Ramíreze. Hlavní hrdina příběhu, dnes již doložená historická postava, pocházel z chudé rodiny z Portorika a ve věku třinácti let se rozhodl z vlasti odejít a hledat štěstí v Novém Španělsku. Poté odplul na vzdálené Filipíny, kde se uchytil jako námořník. Naděje na pohodlnější život se rozplynuly, když jeho loď v roce 1687 zajali angličtí piráti. S nimi se pak Alonso plavil něco přes dva roky, než ho nakonec u pobřeží Brazílie propustili. Poté se zbytkem svojí posádky na vlastní lodi proplul Karibikem a uvázl na mělčinách u břehů Yucatánu.Výčet míst, jež Alonso navštívil, udiví i moderního cestovatele: pracoval v novošpanělských městech Mexiku a Pueble, žil v Manile, podíval se do Malakky, Makaa i na Jávu, s piráty přistál na Borneu, v Austrálii a na Madagaskaru, přeplul Tichý, Indický i Atlantický oceán a po šesti letech na cestách po světě se vrátil do Mexika. Alonso poznal různé kouty španělského impéria i místa patřící jiným evropským mocnostem a byl také svědkem řádění anglických pirátů, jež se v díle barvitě popisuje.Snad právě podrobnosti o jejich krutém chování zaujaly místokrále Nového Španělska. Tamní přístavy často čelily pirátským útokům a Alonsův příběh se místokráli hodil, aby mohl na nebezpečí poukázat a žádat pomoc od španělského krále. Útrapy se tedy dostaly do nejvyšších kruhů královského dvora v Madridu a sehrály roli v místokrálových politických zájmech. Řádky poutavého cestopisu však možná neodráží Alonsův příběh zcela věrně. Některé detaily i jistá bílá místa ve vyprávění naznačují, že Alonso se ve skutečnosti mohl k pirátům přidat, a neplavil se jako jejich zajatec, nýbrž jako jeden z nich. Jsou tedy Útrapy vyprávěním zajatce, nebo vyprávěním piráta? Pravdu se již nedozvíme, v každém případě Alonsova dobrodružná cesta kolem světa zaujme čtenáře i dnes.
