Doyle nakonec těchto povídek napsal celkem šestapadesát a na jejich zápletkách se učili řemeslu další detektivní autoři, zatímco některé Holmesovy detektivní postupy prý přebírali policisté ze slavného Scotland Yardu. Příběhy byly tak úspěšné, že se na Strand Magazine stály fronty. Je paradoxem, že povídky, které mu vynesly největší úspěch, psal Doyle kvůli obživě. A protože ho odváděly od psaní vážné literatury, pokusil se - věren svému žánru - Sherlocka Holmese zabít. Rozhořčené protesty čtenářů, a dokonce samotné královny Victorie ho však přiměly - i když odolával dlouhých deset let - Holmese vrátit mezi živé.
