Peter Tatlow provides readers with a concise and detailed history of railway breakdown cranes in Britain. There are few railway subjects which have not been published in detail in recent years. One however, is that of Breakdown Cranes. Possibly this omission is in part due to the technical nature of the subject and as such the ideal person to compile such a work would be an engineer. Such is the case now with this new work by respected railway author and former BR Civil Engineer, Peter Tatlow. In this two-volume history, Peter has taken the subject from its early days through the time of the short-jib cranes to more recent history and the introduction and use of the long-jib variant. Even so, many of the older types continued in use well into the late 20th century. As well as descriptive and informative text, included are numerous photographs and scale plans. Situated in the Welsh borderland to the West of Oswestry, the scenic Tanat Valley reached westwards into Wales, its Llangynog terminus nestling where the road starts the climb over the Berwyn mountain range towards Bala. It was a lightly populated area that sustained agriculture and some mineral extraction whose residents struggled to get their produce to market. During the 19th Century there were several schemes for a railway that failed due their inability to raise sufficient capital. The Tanat Valley Light Railway is, therefore, a true child of the 1896 Light Railways Act, promoted by the Oswestry Urban District Council the following year to take advantage of the grant-making facilities of that legislation. Because it took so long to obtain powers, and it was not opened until 1906, the Light Railway never really fulfilled its potential. Operated initially by the Cambrian Railways, it was not heavily worked, although it benefited from pipe traffic generated by renewals of Liverpool Corporation’s Vyrnwy reservoir pipeline. Although closure came in stages during the 1950s, and was deemed to be complete in 1960, a short section of track remains in situ at Porthywaen. With the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway being celebrated in 2025, an event rightly marking the dawn of the railway age which so transformed both Britain and the whole world, our modest contribution is to reissue this long out of print history of the North Eastern Railway written by one of the doyens of railway literature in the last century, Cecil J. Allen. The North Eastern Railway had one of the most fascinating and complex histories of all of the British railway companies. As evidence of this, at its formation in 1854, the NER absorbed no fewer than 53 public and 21 private companies. Its roots date back to the earliest days of the development of the wagonways, imperative to carry coals from the Durham and Northumberland mines to the sea. Huge personalities like George Stephenson, Edward and Joseph Pease and George Hudson are involved in its story as is the struggle to build the through trunk route linking the north and south which was to become the East Coast Main Line. Edward Watkin was a prominent figure in 19th-century Britain, renowned for his extensive railway projects and his influence on both social and economic initiatives. As chairman of nine British railway companies, Watkin also developed railways in Canada, the USA, Greece, India, and the Belgian Congo. His leadership roles included senior positions with major British railways like the London and North Western Railway and the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway, and he was president of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada. One of his most ambitious projects was the creation of the Great Central Main Line, a high-speed rail link from Manchester to London, part of his broader vision to connect Manchester to Paris and India via a Channel tunnel. He initiated work on the tunnel in 1880, but it was abandoned due to security concerns. Watkin also developed Wembley Park into a popular destination for Londoners, which later became home to Wembley Stadium. Additionally, he proposed a ‘Great Tower in London’ to surpass the Eiffel Tower, though it was never completed. Through his personal diaries, the author explores Watkin’s lesser-known private life, offering a deeper understanding of this remarkable and visionary individual.
