V šedesátých letech lidé s nadšením chodili do divadel na jeho absurdní hry, v kterých tématizoval plytkost soudobého jazyka, především toho, kterým se snažila kontrolovat situaci tehdejší stranovláda. V sedmdesátých letech, v nuceném disidentském ústraní, se vypracoval v brilantního esejistu, jehož hlavním tématem tentokrát byl především oportunismus takzvaného obyčejného člověka. Svou schopnost komplexně myslet a myšlené pregnantně formulovat Václav Havel osvědčil i za převratu v listopadu 1989. Udělala z něho vůdce revoluce. A kdo pamatuje roky, kdy byl prezidentem, ten si vzpomene, že i tehdy se na Havlova slova čekalo. Byl schopen vyjádřit, nač jiní pouze mysleli nebo co tušili.
