Pokračuje pak zdánlivě nesouvisle o tom, jak vysvětlujeme věci, tj. o povaze přírodovědných teorií a přírodních zákonů. Zde především ukazuje, jaká jsou kritéria pro přijetí určité teorie (kdy dáváme jedné teorii přednost před druhou) a že jsou mezi teoriemi vztahy závislosti (tato část knihy je bez ohledu na to, k čemu autor směřuje, sama o sobě brilantně napsaným úvodem do metodologie dnešního přírodovědeckého poznání). Po uvedených metodologických výkladech přechází autor ke svému vlastnímu námětu.
