In this eye-opening journey through the bizarre world of contemporary art, criticism duo The White Pube tell the story of art like never before.Poor Artists follows aspiring artist Quest Talukdar through childhood obsessions, art school lessons and her professional debut. Chase the Rainbow - Poorna Bell

‘A candid, warm, sad, surprisingly funny, raw, brave, bittersweet book.’ – MATT HAIG ‘Chase the Rainbow is a game-changing book. Poorna Bell’s moving account of the pressures on modern men could be a life-saver. This is a brave and bold work that will inspire us all to talk openly and honestly about depression once and for all. Everyone should read this book.’ – ARIANNA HUFFINGTON ‘I recently devoured this book in a couple of days. It’s so beautifully written, honest and beyond thought-provoking. I urge you to delve into its courageously written pages to learn about Poorna Bell’s story.’ – FEARNE COTTON ‘A story of love and loss and a vital contribution to the mental health debate. A great read.’ – ALASTAIR CAMPBELLAn honest yet uplifting account of a woman #39;s life affected (but not defined) by the suicide of her husband and the deadly paradox of modern-day masculinity. Punk rocker, bird nerd and book lover Rob Bell had a full, happy life. He had a loving wife, a big-bottomed dog named Daisy and a career as a respected science journalist. But beneath the carefully cultivated air of machoism and the need to help other people, he struggled with mental health and a drug addiction that began as a means to self-medicate his illness. In 2015, he ended his life in New Zealand on a winter’s night. But what happened? How did a middle-class Catholic boy from the suburbs, who had an ocean of people who loved him, and a brain the size of a planet, end up dying alone by his own hand? How did it get to this point? In the search to find out about the man she loved, and how he arrived at that desperate, dark moment, Poorna Bell, Executive Editor of The Huffington Post UK, went on a journey spanning New Zealand, India and England to discover more about him. A month after his death, she shared her personal tragedy in an open letter to Rob on the site, which went on to be read by hundreds of thousands of people across the world. This is Poorna’s story, not only of how she met the man of her dreams and fell in love, but also Rob’s story and how he suffered with depression since childhood and had secretly been battling addiction as a means to cope with the illness. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 and a staggering 1 in 4 of us will experience mental illness disease at some point in our lives, but the stigma surrounding mental health means that millions still suffer in silence.Chase the Rainbow is an affecting, poetic, and deeply personal journey which teaches to seek hope and happiness, even in the most tragic of circumstances. Shattering the stigma surrounding depression and suicide, Poorna Bell challenges us talk about what we most fear, and to better understand the personal struggles of those closest to us.

Deaths of Artists - Jim Moske

Starving Artist Knifed to Death in Village Room… Famous Artist Dies Penniless and All Alone… Deep in the archives of The Metropolitan Museum of Art are two strange scrapbooks packed with century-old newspaper obituaries of painters, illustrators, sculptors, and photographers, famous and forgotten alike. Somber death notices of luminaries like Claude Monet and Auguste Rodin are preserved on their crumbling pages, side by side with tragic and often grisly stories of obscure artists who met their demise as victims of accident, murder, poverty, and disease. Compiled from 1906 to 1929, the scrapbooks not only memorialize the subjects of these obituaries: they also record graphic and sensationalized news reporting from the heyday of yellow journalism. Who collected the artists’ obituaries? What was their purpose for the Met Museum? Were the scrapbooks assembled in a nod to Giorgio Vasari’s bestselling sixteenth-century magnum opus, Lives of the Artists, with its hundreds of gossipy artist biographies? When Met Museum archivist Jim Moske chanced upon these fascinating relics forgotten in museum storage, he set out to unravel the mystery of their creation.Delving into Met employee records, Moske discovered the story of Arthur D Hervilly, an ex-convict and aspiring artist who was hired in 1894 as a museum guard. By the twilight of his museum career, D’Hervilly had risen to assistant curator of paintings. Occasionally, he was also called upon to serve as the Met media officer. It was apparently in this capacity that in the summer of 1906, he decided to order the National Press Intelligence clipping service to send him any and all U.S. newspaper stories about the deaths of artists. By the time he died thirteen years later, he had assembled a massive chronicle of reportage. D’Hervilly’s colleagues dutifully carried on adding to the scrapbooks until 1929, leaving behind more than three hundred pages crammed with thousands of obituaries.Deaths of Artists intertwines D Hervilly s peculiar biography with heart-wrenching, bizarre, outlandish, and darkly comic stories of artists, both successful and abject. Moske s meticulously researched narrative is illustrated with full-page images of scrapbook pages, details of shocking obituary headlines, paintings and sculptures by the artist-subjects, and unique documents from the Met archives. The deaths of artists, seen in the light of their uncommon lives, add up to much more than just a litany of sad endings. This eerie glimpse into a dark side of art history and creative practice illuminates the unique challenges artists face, exceptional risks they take, and the cruel turns of fate that often thwart their efforts.

London Labour and the London Poor - Henry Mayhew

With an Introduction by Rosemary O Day.London Labour and the London Poor is a masterpiece of personal inquiry and social observation. It is the classic account of life below the margins in the greatest Metropolis in the world and a compelling portrait of the habits, tastes, amusements, appearance, speech, humour, earnings and opinions of the labouring poor at the time of the Great Exhibition. In scope, depth and detail it remains unrivalled. Mayhew takes us into the abyss, into a world without fixed employment where skills are declining and insecurity mounting, a world of criminality, pauperism and vice, of unorthodox personal relations and fluid families, a world from which regularity is absent and prosperity has departed. Making sense of this environment required curiosity, imagination and a novelist s eye for detail, and Henry Mayhew possessed all three. No previous writer had succeeded in presenting the poor through their own stories and in their own words, and in this undertaking Mayhew rivals his contemporary Dickens. To pass from one to the other , writes one authority, is to cross sides of the same street .

Not to mention how the best comic book artists since the beginnings of the art form use them whether they know it or not.Figure Drawing for Artists: Making Every Mark Count sketches out the same two-step method taught to the artists of DreamWorks, Warner Brothers, and Disney Animation, so pick up a pencil and get drawing. Black Artists in America - Earnestine Lovelle Jenkins, Kevin Sharp, Julie L. McGee, Ellen Daugherty

This third and final volume in the Black Artists in America series features work from the transitional moment of the late 1970s to the dawn of the twenty-first century  In the 1980s and 1990s, Black artists in the United States who came of age during the civil rights activity of the preceding decades began experimenting with new media and innovative approaches to artmaking, often as a way of questioning long-held inequities in the art world and in American society. Artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Sam Gilliam, Glenn Ligon, Faith Ringgold, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, and many others created works that celebrated their racial identity and fought exclusion and prejudices in the establishment. This book considers the ways that the artists of this generation challenged cultural, environmental, political, racial, and social issues of the last decades of the twentieth century.  Black Artists in America: From the Bicentennial to September 11 is the final volume in the three-volume series that traces how Black artists have responded to the social issues of their time. Beautifully illustrated with 150 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, this volume completes the story of a century of artmaking.  Published in association with the Dixon Gallery and Gardens  Exhibition Schedule:  Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA (October 5, 2025⠓January 11, 2026)  Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis, TN (January 25⠓March 29, 2026)

Young, Gifted and Black: A New Generation of Artists

What⠙s new, now and next from contemporary Black artistsA New York Times 2020 holiday gift guide pickThis book surveys the work of a new generation of Black artists, and also features the voices of a diverse group of curators who are on the cutting edge of contemporary art. As mission-driven collectors, Bernard I. Lumpkin and Carmine D. Boccuzzi have championed emerging artists of African descent through museum loans and institutional support. But there has never been an opportunity to consider their acclaimed collection as a whole until now.Edited by writer Antwaun Sargent (author of The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion), Young, Gifted and Black draws from this collection to shed new light on works by contemporary artists of African descent. At a moment when debates about the politics of visibility within the art world have taken on renewed urgency, and establishment voices such as the New York Times are declaring that ⠜it has become undeniable that African American artists are making much of the best American art today,⠝ Young, Gifted and Black takes stock of how these new voices are impacting the way we think about identity, politics and art history itself. Young, Gifted and Black contextualizes artworks with contributions from artists, curators and other experts. It features a wide-ranging interview with Bernard Lumpkin and Thelma Golden, director and chief curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem; and an in-depth essay by Antwaun Sargent situating Lumpkin in a long lineage of Black art patrons. A landmark publication, this book illustrates what it means (in the words of Nina Simone) to be young, gifted and Black in contemporary art.Artists include: Mark Bradford, David Hammons, Glenn Ligon, Kerry James Marshall, Julie Mehretu, Adam Pendleton, Pope.L, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Henry Taylor, Mickalene Thomas, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, Sadie Barnette, Kevin Beasley, Jordan Casteel, Jonathan Lyndon Chase, Bethany Collins, Noah Davis, Cy Gavin, Allison Janae Hamilton, Tomashi Jackson, Samuel Levi Jones, Deana Lawson, Norman Lewis, Eric N. Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory

â ˜Free as they want to beâ ™: Artists Committed to Memory is the companion publication to the FotoFocus biennial exhibition that is scheduled for Fall 2022 and will run at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center until Spring 2023. This project considers the historic and contemporary role that photography and film have played in remembering legacies of slavery and its aftermath while examining the social lives of Black Americans within various places including the land, at home, in photographic albums, at historic sites, and in public memory. This exhibition acknowledges artistsâ ™ constant involvement with efforts to explore the possibilities of freedom and their relationship to it. Their quest to be â ˜as free as they want to beâ ™ is envisioned in the subject matter they explore as well as in their persistent drive to innovate aesthetic practices in photographic media. The publication presents some 20 artists working in photography, video, silkscreen, projection, and mixed media installation. Free as they want to be is inspired by the words of James Baldwin and the timely theme of FotoFocus, World Record, as well as events of late that have shaped the world as we know it. The artists selected for this publication are on the frontlines, creating, documenting, and writing. The works they have conceived reflect defining moments in the struggle for racial justice and equality. Free as they want to be presents an occasion to reflect upon the past, to mark significant defining moments â “ both triumphs and tragedies â “ that characterize a people and their experiences in the present â “ and to propose future possibilities. The artists offer images that advance a different sense of empowerment. Their images thus play an integral part in casting resilient narratives as they commemorate endurance, longevity, and accomplishment. The timing of a publication like this could not be more urgent given the human toll of the pandemic, widening economic disparities, the threat of war, voting rights, global migration crises, and quotidian violence. Bawden, Ravilious and the Artists of Great Bardfield

In 1925, the artists Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious moved to the village of Great Bardfield in the countryside of Essex, England. Over time, other artists came to the village, forming a community of artists and designers that remains active today. In the 1950s, these artists, including Bawden, Ravilious, John Aldridge, Michael Rothenstein, and Marianne Straub, among others, held now-famous “open house” exhibitions, displaying their modernist works to the public in their own homes. These informal shows brought acclaim to the artists, and also brought thousands of visitors to the quaint village. This richly illustrated book shows how that community, and its neigh- boring landscape, nurtured a distinctive style of art, design, and illustrationÂ

White Nights; Poor Folk; The Double - Fyodor Dostoevsky

White Nights is one of Dostoevskyâ ™s earlier short stories but one of his most enduringly popular. It tells the story of four nights in the life of the lonely narrator, who meets and falls in love with the mysterious and beautiful Nastenka.Poor Folk was Dostoevskyâ ™s first novel, written to try and alleviate his financial plight, and was a commercial success. It tells the story of Makar Devushkin, a clerk, and Varvara Dobroselova, a seamstress, by means of the letters they exchange; they are in love, but too poor to marry. Its exploration of humanitarian themes led to it being described as Russiaâ ™s first â ˜social novelâ ™.By contrast, Dostoevskyâ ™s second novel, The Double was not well received. First published in 1846, it was revised and republished by Dostoevsky in 1866, but he did not consider it a success. By contrast, Vladimir Nabokov called it the best thing he ever wroteâ ™ and described it as â ™a perfect work of artâ ™.

How Rich Countries Got Rich and Why Poor Countries Stay Poor - Erik S. Reinert

How Rich Countries Got Rich is a narrative history of modern economic development from the Italian Renaissance to the present day.In it Erik S. Reinert shows how rich countries developed through a combination of government intervention, protectionism, and strategic investment. Reinert suggests that this set of policies in various combinations has driven successful development from Renaissance Italy to the modern Far East. Yet despite its demonstrable success, orthodox development economists have largely ignored this approach and insisted instead on the importance of free trade.Reinert presents a strongly revisionist history of economics and shows how the discipline has long been torn between the continental Renaissance tradition on one hand and the free market theories of English and later American economics on the other. He argues that our economies were founded on protectionism and state activism and could only later afford the luxury of free trade. When our leaders come to lecture poor countries on the right road to riches they do so in almost perfect ignorance of the real history of mass affluence.

Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? - Nochlin Linda

Linda Nochlin s seminal essay on women artists is widely acknowledged as the first real attempt at a feminist history of art. Nochlin refused to handle the question of why there had been no great women artists on its own, corrupted, terms. Instead, she dismantled the very concept of greatness , unravelling the basic assumptions that had centred a male-coded genius in the study of art. With unparalleled insight and startling wit, Nochlin laid bare the acceptance of a white male viewpoint in art historical thought as not merely a moral failure, but an intellectual one. Freedom, as she sees it, requires women to risk entirely demolishing the art world s institutions, and rebuilding them anew - in other words, to leap into the unknown. In this stand-alone anniversary edition, Nochlin s essay is published alongside its reappraisal, Thirty Years After . Written in an era of thriving feminist theory, as well as queer theory, race and postcolonial studies, Thirty Years After is a striking reflection on the emergence of a whole new canon. With reference to Joan Mitchell, Louise Bourgeois, Cindy Sherman and many more, Nochlin diagnoses the state of women and art with unmatched precision and verve. Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? has become a slogan and rallying cry that resonates across culture and society; Dior even adopted it in their 2018 collections. In the 2020s, at a time when certain patriarchal values are making a comeback , Nochlin s message could not be more urgent: as she herself put it in 2015, there is still a long way to go .

This study offers a close look at Watkins⠙s story and considers how women artists of the era overcame barriers within the institutions that structured the professional art world, often through training and exhibiting at established and traditional settings.  Exploring what artistic and commercial success looked like for Watkins and her contemporaries, scholars reexamine Watkins⠙s achievements and highlight the overlooked progressive nature of her art. Essays discuss women⠙s art training in the United States, women⠙s art clubs in Paris, the expatriate artist community in Capri, and the role of racial and class politics in careers such as Watkins⠙s. With more than seventy-five objects⠔including paintings, drawings, photographs, and manuscripts⠔from the artist⠙s personal archive and works by her peers and teachers⠔such as William Merritt Chase, Meta Warrick Fuller, Anna Klumpke, Elizabeth Nourse, Lilla Cabot Perry, and Henry Ossawa Tanner⠔this beautifully illustrated book offers a new way to understand the stakes and accomplishments of women artists working at the turn of the twentieth century.  Published in association with the Chrysler Museum of Art  Exhibition Schedule:  Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis (July 13⠓September 28, 2025)  Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk (October 17, 2025⠓January 11, 2026)

Artists, Siblings, Visionaries - Judith Mackrell

In Artists, Siblings, Visionaries, acclaimed biographer Judith Mackrell turns her attention to British brother and sister artists Gwen and Augustus John.In many ways they were polar opposites. Augustus was the larger of the two; vivid, volatile and promiscuous, he was a hero among romantics and bohemians, celebrated as one of the great British talents of his generation. As a woman, Gwen s place in the art world was much smaller, and her private way of working and reserved nature meant it was only long after her death that her tremendous gifts were fully acknowledged. But her temperament was as turbulent as her brother s. She formed passionate attachments to men and woman, including a long affair with the sculptor Rodin. And there were other ways in which the two Johns were remarkably alike, as Mackrell vividly reveals. The result is a powerful portrait of two prodigiously talented artists and visionaries, whose experiments with form and colour created some of the most memorable work of the early twentieth century.
