Plato of Athens - Robin Waterfield
The first ever biography of the founder of Western philosophy Considered by many to be the most important philosopher ever, Plato was born into a well-to-do family in wartime Athens at the end of the fifth century BCE. In his teens, he honed his intellect by attending lectures from the many thinkers who passed through Athens and toyed with the idea of writing poetry. He finally decided to go into politics, but became disillusioned, especially after the Athenians condemned his teacher, Socrates, to death. Instead, Plato turned to writing and teaching. He began teaching in his twenties and later founded the Academy, the world s first higher-educational research and teaching establishment. Eventually, he returned to practical politics and spent a considerable amount of time and energy trying to create a constitution for Syracuse in Sicily that would reflect and perpetuate some of his political ideals. The attempts failed, and Plato s disappointment can be traced in some of his later political works. In his lifetime and after, Plato was considered almost divine. Though a measure of his importance, this led to the invention of many tall tales about him-both by those who adored him and his detractors. In this first ever full-length portrait of Plato, Robin Waterfield steers a judicious course among these stories, debunking some while accepting the kernels of truth in others. He explains why Plato chose to write dialogues rather than treatises and gives an overview of the subject matter of all of Plato s books. Clearly and engagingly written throughout, Plato of Athens is the perfect introduction to the man and his work.

Euthydemus. Gorgias - Plato
Socrates against sophistry. Plato of Athens, who laid the foundations of the Western philosophical tradition and in range and depth ranks among its greatest practitioners, was born to a prosperous and politically active family circa 427 BC. In early life an admirer of Socrates, Plato later founded the first institution of higher learning in the West, the Academy, among whose many notable alumni was Aristotle. Traditionally ascribed to Plato are thirty-five dialogues developing Socratesâ ™ dialectic method and composed with great stylistic virtuosity, together with the Apology and thirteen letters. The two dialogues in this volume, Euthydemus and Gorgias, probably date from the end of Platoâ ™s early period in the late 380s. They contrast Socratesâ ™ aims and methods with those of sophists, rhetoricians, and others who claimed the ability to teach excellence (arete), while illustrating Socratesâ ™ own conception thereof not as worldly power or political success but as a personal search for wisdom leading to happiness. Gorgias also contains a classic refutation of the â œmight is rightâ philosophy represented by Callicles, a ruthless up-and-coming politician. This edition, which replaces the original Loeb editions by Sir Walter R. M. Lamb, offers text, translation, and annotation that are fully current with modern scholarship.

The History of the Peloponnesian War - Robin Waterfield
A definitive and refreshingly readable new translation of Thucydides s History of the Peloponnesian War, paired with a brilliant introduction on how to read and understand Thucydides.Thucydides called his work a possession for all time, and his History of the Peloponnesian War has been essential reading for generals and politicians for centuries. Robin Waterfield s translation of Thucydides s sweeping narrative vividly depicts the events of the war between Athens and Sparta that began in 431 BCE and would continue until 404, a conflict that embroiled not only mainland Greece but Greek states from the eastern Mediterranean and as far west as Italy and Sicily. The only extant contemporary narrative of this conflict, Thucydides s History brims with military, moral, and political reflections, offering critical commentary on challenges that still dominate our world today, from the strife of civil war to the devastation of widespread plague to the nature of political power. Thucydides died before completing the account-it ends in 410-but his legacy is timeless. One of the great masterpieces of classical Greece, The History of the Peloponnesian War offers an incisive and timely window into the conflicts of the past.

The Making of a King - Robin Waterfield
In the third century BCE, Macedon dominated mainland Greece, but was rapidly descending into chaos. One of the consequences was a massive invasion of Celts, who ravaged and plundered Macedon and northern Greece for several years. Antigonus Gonatas, son of one of Alexander the Great s Successors, finally defeated the Celts and laid the foundations for a long but troubled reign (276-239 BCE). In order to achieve stability, he adopted repressive measures towards many of the Greek cities. The Making of a King is the first book in more than a century to tell the gripping story of Antigonus rule: how he gained the throne, how he held it, the nature of his court, the measures he took towards the Greeks, and their responses. While Antigonus was confirming his rule in Macedon by introducing constitutional changes there, the Greeks were making their own changes. Their only hope for independence lay in greater unity. Two great confederacies of Greek cities emerged: the Aetolians in central Greece, and the Achaeans in the Peloponnese. Robin Waterfield charts Antigonus conflicts with the Greeks and with his perennial enemy, Ptolemy of Egypt. Successes, both diplomatic and military, against these enemies in the 260s and 250s BCE were not enough to gain him peace, and in his final years he saw his control of Greece whittled away by rebellion and the Greek confederacies. Ultimately, the lack of firm control of Greece by Macedon made it possible for Rome to take its place as the arbiter of the Greeks future.

Creators, Conquerors, and Citizens - Robin Waterfield
WE GREEKS ARE ONE IN BLOOD AND ONE IN LANGUAGE; WE HAVE TEMPLES TO THE GODS AND RELIGIOUS RITES IN COMMON, AND A COMMON WAY OF LIFE. So the fifth-century historian Herodotus has the Athenians declare, in explanation of why they would never betray their fellow Greeks to their barbarian Persian enemy. And he could easily have added other common features to this list, such as clothing, culinary traditions, and political institutions. But if the Greeks understood their kinship to one another, why did so many of them fight for the invading Persians? And why, more generally, is ancient Greek history so often one of internecine wars and other, less violent forms of competition? This extraordinary contradiction is the central theme of Robin Waterfield s magisterial new history of ancient Greece. From their emergence in the Mediterranean around 750 BCE to the Roman conquest of the last of the Greco-Macedonian kingdoms in 30 BCE, this is the complete story of the ancient Greeks. Equal weight is given to all eras of Greek history-the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods-and to the celebrated figures who shaped it, from Solon and Pericles to Alexander and Cleopatra. In addition, by incorporating the most recent scholarship in classical history and archaeology, the book provides fascinating insights into Greek law, religion, philosophy, drama, and the role of women and slaves in ancient Greek society. A brilliant account of a remarkable civilization, Creators, Conquerors, and Citizens presents a comprehensive and compelling portrait of the perennial paradox of ancient Greece: political disunity combined with underlying cultural solidarity.

Athens - Bruce Clark
A sweeping history of Athens, telling the three-thousand-year story of the birthplace of Western civilization, from Runciman Award winner Bruce Clark A stunning retrospect and beautifully written overview of one of the world s greatest cities Paul Cartledge Courageously grand in scale yet sensitive to the details that make Athens extraordinary history come alive Sofka Zinovieff Bruce Clark brings an eye for the quirky, human detail, a pithy turn of phrase, and an affection for his subject honed over many decades Roderick Beaton Bruce Clark s enchantingly readable history revealed how little I knew Literary ReviewDominated by the pillars and pediments of the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to Athena, goddess of wisdom, the ancient Greek city of Athens is for many synonymous with civilization itself.Athens: City of Wisdom tells the tale of a city that occupies a unique place in the cultural memory of the West. Each of the book s twenty-one chapters focuses on a critical moment in the city s long history, from the reforms of the lawmaker Solon in the sixth century BCE to the travails of early twenty-first-century Athens, as a rapidly expanding city struggles with the legacy of a global economic crisis. Bruce Clark has a rich and revealing sequence of stories to tell ⠓ not only of the familiar golden age of Classical Athens, of the removal from the Acropolis of the Parthenon marbles by agents of the 7th Earl of Elgin in the early nineteenth century, or of the holding of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896; but also of the less fêted later years of antiquity, when St Paul preached on the Areopagus and neo Platonists refounded the Academy that Sulla s legions had desecrated. He also delves into Athens forgotten medieval centuries, unearthing jewels gleaming in the Byzantine twilight, and tales of Christian fortitude and erratic Turkish governance from the four centuries of Ottoman rule that followed.Few places have enjoyed a history so rich in artistic creativity and the making of ideas as Athens; or one so curiously patterned by alternating cycles of turbulence and quietness. Writing with scholarly rigour and undisguised affection, Bruce Clark brings three thousand years of Athenian history vividly to life.

Athens Tales
Athens Tales is a portrait of Greece s capital through the city s own writers. The book is made up of eighteen short stories, in English translation, by different Greek authors, some of whom have never appeared before in English. Taking a roughly chronological course from the 1890s to the present day, through these stories, the reader follows the history of Athens through its multiple transformations, from a small town in the nineteenth century to a sprawling modern metropolis. The reader also observes the major events of Athens recent history - from the effects of the 1923 Population Exchange with Turkey, to Nazi Occupation in World War II, to post-war boom, to Economic Crisis - through a literary lens. The stories have been chosen to give a representative sample of different eras of Greek writing, from 19th century realism to postmodern fiction to detective fiction. As well as being a portrait of the city, the volume also serves as an introduction to the last one hundred and fifty years of Greek fiction writing. Each story is accompanied by a black-and-white photograph (contemporary with the story), some published for the first time, giving the reader a sense of the changing visual landscape of the city, as well as a visual counterpoint to the writing. The volume also includes a scholarly introduction, providing the literary and historical context of the stories, as well as notes and suggestions for further reading.

The last story of the trio is The Transition of Juan Romero, from 1919, originally written for a limited circle of friends and published after Lovecraft’s death. The feature “character” is a mysterious evil encountered in an ancient ritual to the Mexican deity, Huitzilopochtli. All three short stories are dense with dramatic build-up, thanks to superb performances by the actors and highly atmospheric music. Original graphics on the cover complete the package.

Britain After Rome - Robin Fleming
The enormous hoard of beautiful gold military objects found in a field in Staffordshire has focused huge attention on the mysterious world of 7th and 8th century Britain. Clearly the product of a sophisticated, wealthy, highly militarized society, the objects beg innumerable questions about how we are to understand the people who once walked across the same landscape we inhabit, who are our ancestors and yet left such a slight record of their presence. Britain after Rome brings together a wealth of research and imaginative engagement to bring us as close as we can hope to get to the tumultuous centuries between the departure of the Roman legions and the arrival of Norman invaders nearly seven centuries later. As towns fell into total decay, Christianity disappeared and wave upon wave of invaders swept across the island, it can be too easily assumed that life in Britain became intolerable - and yet this is the world in which modern languages and political arrangements were forged, a number of fascinating cultures rose and fell and tantalizing glimpses, principally through the study of buildings and burials, can be had of a surprising and resilient place. The result of a lifetime of work, Robin Fleming s major new addition to the Penguin History of Britain could not be more opportune. A richly enjoyable, varied and surprising book, Britain after Rome allows its readers to see Britain s history in a quite new light.

Enlightenment, Culture, Leisure: Houses of Culture in Czechoslovakia - Irena Lehkoživová, Michaela Janečková
The publication is the first book to provide a comprehensive account of the building of a nationwide network of cultural houses, which were systematically established during the socialist period in the former Czechoslovakia. As places of public life in post-war society, these buildings enjoyed generous state support, not only economically but also politically and legislatively. Our interest is not only focused on their specific typology, but we also look at their educational and emancipatory potential as well as their role as a political tool for the organization and control of leisure. The publication also focuses on the search for the roots and programmatic antecedents of cultural institutions established from the nineteenth century onwards and in the inter-war period (association and national or workers houses), with an overlap into the post-1989 period, when buildings and their operators had to, and sometimes still have to, cope with the demands of modernisation. The book covers both the Czech and Slovak context of the construction of cultural houses, which not only manages to cover the entire territory of the former Czechoslovakia, but also to capture the different historical experiences. The texts for the book were written by Jiří Andrs, Jan Galeta, Hubert Guzik, Katarína Haberlandová, Michaela Janečková, Laura Krišteková, Josef Ledvina, Irena Lehkoživová, Henrieta Moravčíková, Peter Szalay, Karel Šima, Jitka Šosová, Lukáš Veverka, Jan Zikmund, with a foreword by the leading British cultural and art historian David Crowley. The book is a combination of a scholarly book and a pictorial publication with images by photographers Oskar Helcel and Martin Netočný. The series of photographs divides the text into four parts, the first of which focuses on historical pre-images of cultural houses in the Czech lands and Slovakia from the 19th century onwards, and the second on the practical aspects of their construction during the period of state socialism. The third traces the history and changes of cultural houses in the Czech lands from the Second World War to the 1990s. The fourth section focuses on the same in Slovak territory and also includes two case studies, one from Slovakia and the other from the Czech Republic. The individual texts are accompanied by a number of contemporary reproductions, many of which are published for the first time. Graphics by Tereza Hejmová, Adéla Svobodová
