Svazek Eseje a kritiky přináší výbor z autorových textů vytvořených v období let 1971-2016. Milan Nápravník (1931-2017) byl český surrealistický básník, esejista, dramaturg, autor rozhlasových her, malíř, fotograf a sochař. V roce 1968 odchází do emigrace, kde po přechodném pobytu v Západním Berlíně a Paříži působí jako rozhlasový redaktor v německém Kolíně nad Rýnem. Autor několika knižních titulů - básnických sbírek, próz a souborů esejistických textů. Se svými asamblážemi, malbami, skulpturami a fotografiemi se zúčastňuje řady výstav ve Francii, Velké Británii a Spolkové republice Německo. V roce 1996 vystavuje také v Praze ve výstavní síni Mladé Fronty a po jeho smrti uspořádá retrospektivní výstavu Nápravníkova výtvarného díla pražská Galerie Maldoror (2018). Jako člen Sociálnědemokratické strany Německa (SPD) se hlavně v sedmdesátých a osmdesátých létech podílí aktivním způsobem na tamním politickém dění. Soubor statí publikovaných v Literárních novinách mezi lety 1967-69. Kundera tento fejeton nazval O slavnosti a hostech: Milý Tondo, když jsi mi řekl o příspěvek pro první české číslo Lettre internationale, myslel jsem, že nic nemám. Navrhoval jsi mi (jako už tolikrát), abych přeložil do češtiny něco z toho, co jsem v cizině napsal o českých věcech.
