Nicméně sever ostrova je dnes opět v rukou cizinců, přinejmenším na pár měsíců v roce. Vedle hotelů, restaurací, diskoték a krámků se suvenýry se za hradební zdí prostírá stará část Rhodu, město světového kulturního dědictví s pozůstatky dob antických, křižáckých a východořímských. Bohatství minulých dob zde najdete na každém kroku. Z byzantské epochy, která skončila r. 1453, pocházejí četné kostely, kapličky a kláštery. Zdejší mniši a jeptišky prokazují svým hostům často zvláštní pohostinnost, s níž se však cestovatelé setkávají i vně klášterních zdí. V každém případě poznáte původní řecký způsob života lépe na jihu ostrova, v turisticky zatím nepříliš dotčených vesnicích a obcích jako Kattavía, Asklípion nebo Síana, než na rušném a hlučném severu. Nejkrásnější pláže najdete na dosud venkovském východním pobřeží. Turistickým centrem je památkově chráněný Líndos, jehož 1000 obyvatel čelí v sezóně osminásobnému počtu turistů. To je cena za pravidelné příjmy. Vždyť existence mnoha jiných vesnic je ohrožena nedostatkem. Přitom však tento kopcovitý ostrov (200-600 m n. m.) není chudý: v časném létě se utápí v moři květů, ovoce, zeleniny a vína je zde dostatek, a dokonce i rybolov ještě stále vynáší.
