1984 - George Orwell, Jaroslav Róna
Nové vydání s ilustracemi Jaroslava Róny. Když George Orwell vydal v roce 1949 dystopický román Devatenáct set osmdesát čtyři, získala nejen anglická, ale i světová literatura dílo nadané neobyčejnou intelektuální vizí.

Na pozadí všedních dní popisuje německé bombardování Londýna, napjatou politickou situaci, pokrytectví anglické vyšší třídy a přidává i své osobní úvahy a inspirativní myšlenky. Homage to Catalonia - George Orwell
After travelling to Spain at the end of 1936 with the intention of working as a correspondent for a British socialist newspaper, thirty-three-year-old George Orwell decided to join the Republican efforts to overturn Franco's Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. Having enrolled in the POUM militias, the young writer was soon forced to experience first-hand the hardships and dangers of trench warfare, before becoming involved in the Barcelona May Day street fighting and nearly being killed by a bullet on his return to the front line. Orwell's initial idealistic dreams of a victorious fight against fascism were gradually tainted by doubt and disillusionment as the divisions and infighting within the Republican coalition became apparent.Part war memoir, part tract, part expose, Homage to Catalonia is a pivotal work in Orwell's oeuvre, and a key to understanding his political ideas and commitment to the socialist cause. Rejected by Orwell's long-standing publisher, Gollancz, on political grounds, it is here presented in its original version, as published by Secker & Warburg in 1938.

1984: George Orwell a Československo / 1984: George Orwell and Czechoslovakia - Petr Blažek, Petr Koura, Ladislav Nagy, Kryštof Zeman, Erika Stařecká,
Hlavními tématy této publikace jsou československé reflexe tvorby britského spisovatele George Orwella, zejména proslulých románů 1984 a Farma zvířat. Společně s romány My Jevgenije Zamjatina a Konec civilizace Aldouse Huxleyho se jedná o klasická díla dystopické literatury. Autoři této knihy se zabývají nejen exilovými a samizdatovými vydáními zmíněných Orwellových románů, jejich vznikem a šířením v nesvobodné společnosti, ale také uměleckými díly ovlivněnými Orwellovou tvorbou. Pozornost rovněž věnují podobám orwellovského roku 1984 v Československu včetně represí proti oponentům komunistického režimu a projevů solidarity s politickými vězni. The publication gives account of Czechoslovakian reflections on the work of British writer George Orwell, especially his famous novels Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm. Together with Yevgeny Zamyatin's novel We and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, these are classic works of dystopian literature. The authors of the present book examine not only the exile and samizdat editions of the aforementioned Orwell novels, their origins and dissemination in the society under a totalitarian rule, but also works of art inspired by Orwell's work. Attention is also paid to the forms of commemoration of ‘Orwellian year' 1984 in Czechoslovakia, including the repression of opponents of the Communist régime and expressions of solidarity with political prisoners. Katalog byl vydán k výstavě, která se konala v Praze od 25. června do 25. září 2024.

Nineteen Eighty-Four - George Orwell
The Thought Police, Doublethink, Newspeak, Big Brother - 1984 itself: these terms and concepts have moved from the world of fiction into our everyday lives. They are central to our thinking about freedom and its suppression; yet they were newly created by George Orwell in 1949 as he conjured his dystopian vision of a world where totalitarian power is absolute. In this novel, continuously popular since its first publication, readers can explore the dark and extraordinary world he brought so fully to life. The principal characters who lead us through that world are ordinary human beings like ourselves: Winston Smith and Julia, whose falling in love is also an act of rebellion against the Party. Opposing them are the massed powers of the state, which watches its citizens on all sides through technology now only too familiar to us. No-one is free from surveillance; the past is constantly altered, so that there is no truth except the most recent version; and Big Brother, both loved and feared, controls all. Even the simple act of keeping a diary - as Winston does - is punishable by death. In Winston's battle to keep his freedom of thought, he has a powerful adversary in O'Brien, who uses fear and pain to enter his very thought processes. Does 2+2 = 4? Or is it 5? We find out in Room 101.Nineteen Eighty-Four was Orwell's last novel; but the world he created is always with us, as successive generations of readers find within it a mirror for their own times and a warning for the future. Our edition also includes the following selection of Orwell's essays, column extracts and broadcasts: A Hanging; Spilling the Spanish Beans; Reviews of Jack London, The Iron Heel; H. George Orwell's Perverse Humanity - Glenn Burgess
This is the first book to focus primarily on George Orwell’s ideas about free speech and related matters – freedom of the press, the writer’s freedom of expression, honesty and truthfulness – and, in particular, the ways in which they are linked to his political vision of socialism. Orwell is today claimed by the Left and Right, by neo-conservatives and neo-socialists. How is that possible? Part of the answer, as Glenn Burgess reveals, is that Orwell was an odd sort of socialist. The development of Orwell’s socialism was, from the start, conditioned by his individualist and liberal commitments. The hopes he attached to socialism were for a fairer, more equal world that would permit human freedom and individuality to flourish, completing, not destroying, the work of liberalism. Freedom of thought was a central part of this, and its defence and use were essential parts of the struggle to ensure that socialism developed in a liberal, humane form that did not follow the totalitarian path of Soviet communism. Written in celebration of Orwell’s dictum, ''We hold that the most perverse human being is more interesting than the most orthodox gramophone record,'' George Orwell''s Perverse Humanity is a portrait of Orwell that captures these themes and provides a new understanding of him as a political thinker and activist. Based on archival research and new materials that affirm his work as an activist for freedom, it also uncovers a socialist ideology that has been obscured in just the way that the author feared it would be – associated in many people’s minds with totalitarian unfreedom.

George Orwell, penniless and with nowhere to go, found himself experiencing just this as he wandered the streets of both capitals in search of a job. By day, he tramped the streets, often passing time with ''screevers'' or street artists, drunks and other hobos. At night, he stood in line for a bed in a ''spike'' or doss house, where a cup of sugary tea, a hunk of stale bread and a blanket were the only sustenance and comfort on offer.First published in 1933, Down and Out in Paris and London is George Orwell''s haunting account of the streets and those who have no choice but to live on them.''A man who looked at his world with wonder and wrote down exactly what he saw, in admirable prose'' John MortimerCOMPLETE THE TRIO WITH SHEPARD FAIREY''S NEW-LOOK 1984 AND ANIMAL FARM.

Animal Farm - George Orwell
In 1943, there was an urgent need for Animal Farm. The Soviet Union had become Britain's ally in the war against Nazi Germany, and criticism of Stalin's brutal regime was either censored or discouraged. In any case, many intellectuals on the left still celebrated the Soviet Union, claiming that the terrors of its show trials, summary executions and secret police were either exaggerated or necessary. But, to Orwell, Stalin was always a \"disgusting murderer\" and he wanted to remind people of this fact in a powerful and memorable way.But how to do it? A political essay would never reach a wide enough audience; a traditional novel would take too long to write. Orwell hit on the inspired idea of combining the moralism of the traditional 'beast fable' with the satire of Gulliver's Travels. A group of farmyard animals, led by the pigs, overthrow their human masters. Their revolution is inspired by high ideals: the farm will be run in the interests of its animals with no more slaughtering, plenty of food for all and comfort in retirement. But when Napoleon the pig takes command, he quickly corrupts their principles, creating a new tyranny worse than the old.Orwell wrote Animal Farm in the middle of the Second World War, but at first no publishers wanted to touch it. It was finally published in August 1945, once the war was over. This little book quickly became a seminal text in the emerging 'cold war' (a phrase that Orwell himself coined). It also became a site of that conflict itself, suffering various attempts to subvert or change its meaning.Today, Animal Farm remains a powerful fable about the nature of tyranny and corruption which applies for all ages. Our edition also includes the following essays: Shooting an Elephant; Charles Dickens; Inside the Whale; The Frontiers of Art and Propaganda; Literature and Totalitarianism; Fascism and Democracy; Patriots and Revolutionaries; Catastrophic Gradualism; Some Thoughts on the Common Toad; Why I Write; Writers and Leviathan

HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. If there is one man to whom I do feel myself inferior, it is a coalminer. In the mid-1930s, George Orwell was given an assignment from his publisher – to write a book about unemployment and social conditions in the economically depressed north of England. Revolutionary for its time, The Road to Wigan Pier documents Orwell’s stint in towns likes Barnsley, Sheffield and Wigan in 1936, where he met and observed working-class people living in the bleak industrial heartlands of Yorkshire and Lancashire.Orwell graphically and emphatically describes the hardships of ordinary people living in cramped slum housing, working in dangerous mines and growing hungry through malnutrition and social injustice. It is an honest, gripping and humane study that also looks at socialism as a solution to the problems facing working-class northerners – something many readers at the time were uncomfortable discussing. The Road to Wigan Pier cemented ideas that would be found in Orwell''s later works, and remains a powerful portrait of poverty, injustice and class divisions in Britain to this day.

Written when Orwell was a struggling writer in his twenties, it documents his ''first contact with poverty''. Here, he painstakingly documents a world of unrelenting drudgery and squalor - sleeping in bug-infested hostels and doss houses of last resort, working as a dishwasher in Paris''s vile ''Hôtel X'', surviving on scraps and cigarette butts, living alongside tramps, a star-gazing pavement artist and a starving Russian ex-army captain. Homage to Catalonia - George Orwell
''If you had asked me why I had joined the militia I should have answered: "To fight against Fascism," and if you had asked me what I was fighting for, I should have answered: "Common decency."'' Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell''s account of the Spanish Civil War. It was the last and most mature of Orwell''s documentary books and it is a sharp, focused and angry account of the fighting in Spain. The discomforts of trench warfare, his near-death experience of being shot, and his painful and disorientating medical treatment all contribute to the book''s gripping immediacy. At the same time, Orwell was aware that he was producing a work of art: ''Beware of my partisanship,'' he warns his readers, ''my mistakes of fact, and the distortion inevitably caused by my having seen only one corner of events.''Lisa Mullen''s introduction examines how the book straddles the divide between literature and history, and provides readers and students with a concise explanatory account of the controversies which have grown up around the book since its publication.

Orwell and England - George Orwell
George Orwell, perhaps one of the most perceptive writers of the twentieth century, wrote extensively about English life and politics. This selection of his essays and journalism brings together his most provocative and insightful writing on England and Englishness.Part of the Macmillan Collector's Library; a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover. This edition is edited and introduced by Professor Michael Gardiner.Orwell's interests were broad. He often wrote about everyday concerns such as transport, food and the weather. Turning to social issues, he exposed the plight of the poor and the unemployed. He dissected the idea of nationalism and he examined the failings of the Left. What emerges from his acute observation of English rituals, habits and attitudes is his belief that these are the very things with which the English people can defend themselves against oppression. His writing remains insightful and prescient to this day.

All Art Is Propaganda - George Orwell, Keith Gessen
The essential collection of critical essays from a twentieth-century master and author of 1984.As a critic, George Orwell cast a wide net. Equally at home discussing Charles Dickens and Charlie Chaplin, he moved back and forth across the porous borders between essay and journalism, high art and low. A frequent commentator on literature, language, film, and drama throughout his career, Orwell turned increasingly to the critical essay in the 1940s, when his most important experiences were behind him and some of his most incisive writing lay ahead. All Art Is Propaganda follows Orwell as he demonstrates in piece after piece how intent analysis of a work or body of work gives rise to trenchant aesthetic and philosophical commentary. With masterpieces such as "Politics and the English Language" and "Rudyard Kipling" and gems such as "Good Bad Books," here is an unrivaled education in, as George Packer puts it, "how to be interesting, line after line."With an Introduction from Keith Gessen.

''This selection is a ceaseless delight ... there is a treat on almost every page'' Daily TelegraphGeorge Orwell wrote, in his words, from ''a desire to see things as they are''. This new collection of his journalism and other writings, including articles, essays, broadcasts, poems, book and film reviews from across his career, shows his unmatched genius for observing the world. Whether discussing Polish immigration or Scottish independence, railing against racism, defending the English language or holding an imaginary conversation with Jonathan Swift, these pieces reveal a clear-eyed, entertaining and eternally relevant chronicler of his age.Edited with an introduction by Peter Davison''Orwell''s luminous gift was for seeing things, for noticing what others missed, took for granted or simply found uninteresting, for discovering meaning and wonder in the familiarity of the everyday... Nothing escaped or seemed beneath his notice, which was what made him such a good reporter... Seeing Things As They Are is intended to be a collection first and foremost of his journalism, with preference given to lesser-known pieces and reviews as well as some of the poems he wrote. It is full of interest and curiosities'' Jason Cowley, Financial Times''Peter Davison gives us a feast of [Orwell''s] shorter writings, showing how from such hesitant beginnings he evolved into the writer of enduring importance we know, committed to decency, equality and political honesty, who could nevertheless wax lyrical over the first signs of spring or an imaginary English pub'' Gordon Bowker, Independent

Down and Out in Paris and London - George Orwell
Published in 1933, and still relevant today, Orwell’s first full-length work is a compassionate and insightful description of the life of the working poor in Paris and the homeless in London.Written when Orwell was a struggling writer in his twenties, he vividly documents a world of unrelenting squalor – sleeping in bug-infested hostels and doss houses, working as a plongeur in a Paris hotel, surviving on scraps and cigarette butts, living alongside tramps, a pavement artist and a starving Russian ex-army captain.Exposing a shocking, previously-hidden world to his readers, Orwell gave a human face to the statistics of poverty for the first time – and in doing so, found his voice as a writer.''Orwell was the great moral force of his age'' – Spectator

Animal Farm - George Orwell
All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.George Orwell''s fable of revolutionary farm animals - the steadfast horses Boxer and Clover, the opportunistic pigs Snowball and Napoleon, and the deafening choir of sheep - who overthrow their elitist human master only to find themselves subject to a new authority, is one of the most famous warnings ever written. Rejected by such eminent publishing figures as Victor Gollancz, Jonathan Cape and T.S. Eliot due to its daringly open criticism of Stalin, Animal Farm was published to great acclaim by Martin Secker and Warburg on 17 August 1945. One reviewer wrote ''In a hundred years'' time perhaps Animal Farm ... may simply be a fairy story: today it is a fairy story with a good deal of point.'' Seventy-five years since its first publication, Orwell''s immortal satire remains an unparalleled masterpiece and more relevant than ever. The Authoritative Text. With an introduction by Christopher Hitchens.*The jacket of this stunning hardback edition features period artwork by Elizabeth Friedlander, one of Europe''s pre-eminent 20th-century graphic designers. Including The Road to Wigan Pier''No one wrote better about the English character than Orwell'' New York Review of BooksMuch of George Orwell''s best writing, brought together in this collection, is concerned with his complex, often contradictory attitude to England. In the brilliantly perceptive The English People, he lists the national characteristics as ''suspicion of foreigners, sentimentality about animals, hypocrisy, exaggerated class distinctions and an obsession with sport''. The Road to Wigan Pier, his blistering account of poverty in the north of England, and many of his essays, attack what he called ''the most class-ridden country under the sun'', while other writings here ruminate on the merits of cricket, gardening, roast dinners, pubs, tea and seaside postcards.Edited by Peter Davison with an Introduction by Ben Pimlott

Rebecca's Tale - Beauman Sally
On the twentieth anniversary of the death of Rebecca, the hauntingly beautiful first wife of Maxim de Winter, family friend Colonel Julyan receives an anonymous parcel. It contains a black notebook with two handwritten words on the title page -- Rebecca''s Tale -- and two pictures: a photograph of Rebecca as a young child and a postcard of Manderley. Rebecca once asked Julyan to ensure she was buried in the churchyard facing the sea: if she ended up in the de Winter crypt, she warned, she''d come back to haunt him. Now, it seems, she has finally kept her promise.Julyan''s conscience has never been clear over the official version of Rebecca''s death. Was Rebecca the manipulative, promiscuous femme fatale her husband claimed. Or the gothic heroine of tragic proportions that others had suggested. The official story, the ''truth'', has only had Maxim''s version of events to consider. But all that is about to change . . .

Farma zvířat (Rybka) - George Orwell
Nové ilustrované vydání Farmy zvířat s desítkami obrazů ukrajinského malíře Iwana Kulika, jakož i s dosud nepublikovaným textem, v němž autor objasňuje a komentuje zrod své slavné knihy.Když George Orwell v roce 1944 dopsal svou Farmu zvířat, nemohl tušit, že jeho alegorická bajka o ruské revoluci a stalinské diktatuře se po několika desetiletích stane klasikou, ba povinnou školní četbou, a to tím spíše, že britští nakladatelé o vydání knihy zpočátku nejevili pražádný zájem, ba přímo ji odmítali – své nesmrtelné dílko totiž autor napsal v době, kdy západní mocnosti v přetěžkém zápase s nacistickým Německem spolupracovali se Sovětským svazem a kdy panovala obava, že by dystopický, až příliš pravdivý obraz reality sovětské společnosti mohl Stalina nahněvat. Orwell byl přesvědčen o tom, že spojenectví nebude mít dlouhého trvání a své přesvědčení prorocky vtělil do závěrečné scény Farmy zvířat (jejímž předobrazem je teheránská konference), která nejenže symbolizuje definitivní konec revolučního idealismu a vítězství cynického prag¬matismu, ale též ohlašuje éru nesmiřitelného konfliktu, kterému se zanedlouho začne říkat studená válka.Jestliže Farma zvířat v době svého vydání vyvolávala u mnoha komentátorů a kritiků rozpaky, ba odpor, s příchodem otevřené studené války se situace obrátila a příčiny tohoto zvratu byly i tentokrát politické povahy: kniha byla napříště halasně velebena a hojně vydávána, protože se ukázala jako efektivní nástroj antikomunistické propagandy. Americká vláda financovala překlady knihy do jazyků (např. Součástí knihy je i předmluva k ukrajinskému vydání z roku 1947, jediný Orwellův publikovaný úvod k Farmě zvířat a současně jediný autorův osobní komentář ke genezi knihy.
