Betty MacDonaldová (1908–1958) Betty MacDonaldová se narodila do početné a svérázné rodiny, která se často stěhovala. Ve dvaceti letech se Betty vdala a odešla na odlehlou slepičí farmu. Tuto svou „drůbeží“ etapu pak zachytila v knize Vejce a já, románové prvotině, která jí zajistila okamžitý úspěch. Po vypuknutí Velké hospodářské krize se Betty s dvěma dcerami vrátila za rodinou do Seattlu. Zde pak MacDonaldovi vedli sice nesnadný, zato příhodami nabitý život, který Betty později popsala v memoárech Co život dal a vzal. Knihy Betty MacDonaldové si získaly srdce milionů čtenářů díky jejímu neutuchajícímu optimismu a osobitému humoru. Dana Syslová (1950) Dětství strávila Dana Syslová na venkově u prarodičů, matčina profese knihovnice ji přivedla k zálibě ve čtení a v době dospívání zcela propadla divadlu. Vystudovala herectví na DAMU a ještě před dokončením studií získala angažmá v Městských divadlech pražských, kde strávila třicet let (1964–1994). Objevila se v desítkách filmových a televizních rolí a věnuje se také dabingu, za který získala Cenu Františka Filipovského. Její hlas je spojený zejména s herečkou Helen Mirren, ale propůjčila jej také Dianě Keaton, Vanesse Redgrave, Susan Sarandon a řadě dalších. Díky svému osobitému projevu se prosadila v rozhlase, kde se stala například hlavní protagonistkou rozhlasového seriálu Život je pes. Pejsci jsou zároveň jejím velkým hobby. V období 1937–1938, kdy onemocněla tuberkulózou, pobývala v plicním sanatoriu. Zážitky z tohoto krušného období zaznamenala v románu Morová rána (1948). V roce 1942 se autorka provdala za Donalda C. MacDonalda (1910–1975) a spolu s dcerami přesídlili na ostrov Vashon v blízkosti Seattlu. Život na ostrově se všemi jeho specifiky autorka vylíčila v knize Dusím se ve vlastní šťávě (1955). Z ostrova se MacDonaldovi odstěhovali v roce 1956, kdy koupili ranč v Kalifornii. Betty MacDonaldová zemřela na rakovinu v pouhých padesáti letech v roce 1958. Její humoristické romány (poslední tři jsou v českém překladu známé pod souborným názvem Co život dal a vzal) dodnes sklízejí neobyčejný úspěch, snad proto, že autorce se daří doslova nabíjet čtenáře nadějí, že žádná překážka není nepřekonatelná a žádná situace beznadějná. Úsměvná vyprávění americké autorky Betty MacDonaldové si získala oblibu svou bezprostředností a upřímností. Pod titulem Co život dal a vzal vyšly tři její práce - Kdokoli může dělat cokoli, Morová rána, Dusím se ve vlastní šťávě - navazující na její neméně populární knížku Vejce a já. MacDonaldová čerpá náměty výhradně z vlastního života, popisuje, co ji potkalo dobrého i zlého.
