Jeho vliv nezůstal u zobecňujících témat lidské existence, ale dotýkal se i všedních událostí. Zásadní byl jeho odsudek ruské invaze v roce 1968, který je v knize poprvé publikován. Společně se Simone de Beauvoirovou, navštívil Československo čtyřikrát. Zejména jeho návštěvu v roce 1963 lze označit ve 20. století za osudovou, srovnatelnou s návštěvou André Bretona a Paula Éluarda v roce 1935. Kniha, zahrnující na dvě stě fotografií a dokumentů, mimo jiné poprvé doceňuje skutečnost, jak nesmírný vliv měl Sartre na přijetí Franze Kafky, na místní filozofy včetně Jana Patočky, ale i divadelníky.
