Rozumí se, že jsem nikomu nic neřekl, jelikož jsem se obával, že by mě moje rodina do toho Turecka nepustila. Když jsem přijel do Vídně, vzal jsem si drožku, aby mě vyvezla na silnici, která vede do Terstu. Drožkář mě zavezl do Triester Strasse, tu jsem tedy z drožky vystoupil a nastoupil cestu pešky do Terstu. Trvalo 18 dní, než jsem se do Terstu dostal. Na cestě jsem přenocoval u dobrých lidí, pro které jsem si vymyslel a kterým jsem vyprávěl vždy jednu a tutéž historku: „Jsem sirotek, mám známé v nejbližším městě (to město jsem vždycky nalezl na mapě) a jdu k nim.“

"Ach tak," odpověděla úřednice, "to jsem nevěděla. Dobrá, tak vás tedy propustíme. Vaše předačka přece řekla, že jste neschopná." Okamžitě mi vystavila papíry a mile mi popřála hodně štěstí. "Není tady," řekla jsem. "Odvedli ho." "Aha! V tom případě musím na obálku napsat odstěhován na východ bez udání adresy," prohlásil listonoš. "A pak tu mám ještě něco, měla by tu bydlet jistá slečna Jalowiczová." Okamžitě jsem tu obálku poznala: Byla to další výzva z Úřadu práce.
