Formed in 1969, four years later in 1972 the state-owned National Bus Company introduced a corporate livery and identity for all its subsidiary companies and continued as such until the early 1980s, except within the Tyne & Wear and West Yorkshire PTEs where other liveries were used. As a consequence of its Market Analysis Project, several local fleet names made an appearance. After it was announced that the NBC subsidiaries would be sold to the private sector in 1986–88, a number of them began to adopt new liveries in preparation for new ownership.This book explores these transitions through a range of photographs with detailed captions, showcasing the numerous changes that took place in the early to mid-1980s.

It had a vast operating area, growing in the corporate era of the early 1970s to stretch from the hills above Macclesfield in Cheshire to the industrial area of Biddulph in Staffordshire, rural Shropshire at Oswestry, through the city streets of Liverpool, across all of North Wales and right down through remote mid-Wales to the far-off West Wales towns of New Quay, Newcastle Emlyn and Lampeter.From its headquarters in Chester, Crosville operated truly diverse services, ranging from rural market day-only routes and open-top holiday services to intense inter-urban services, even on dedicated busways, unique at the time. London Transport was created in 1933 with monopoly powers. Not only did it have exclusive rights to run bus (and tram and trolleybus) services in the Greater London area, it also ran services in a Country Area all around London. Green Line express services linked the country towns to London and in most cases across to other country towns the other side of the metropolis. This country area extended north as far as Hitchin, east to Brentwood, south to Crawley and west to Windsor.But what of the towns at the edge of the country area? Here the green London Transport buses would meet the bus companies whose operations extended across the rest of the counties of Berkshire, Surrey, Kent etc. In some cases the town was at a node where more than one company worked in. Elsewhere, such as at Guildford there were local independent operators who had a share in the town services.It would all change from 1970 when the London Transport Country Area was transferred to the National Bus Company to form a new company named London Country Bus Services. Starting in Oxford, characterised by City of Oxford’s red, maroon and duck-egg green buses, the River Thames is followed through Wallingford to Reading, where the Corporation ran trolleybuses until 1968. A diversion along the Thames’ tributary River Kennett displays both Thames Valley and independent Reliance’s vehicles around Newbury. Back on the Thames at Henley, wartime Bedford OWBs were in service as late as 1966. Looping down river through Marlow and Maidenhead, Windsor and the boundary of London Transport’s monopoly area are reached. Continuing downstream past Staines and Walton-on-Thames, London Transport’s final day of trolleybus operation around Kingston upon Thames in 1962 is illustrated before conclusion with unexpected independent bus operation at Richmond upon Thames.As well as quality pictures of both major and independent operators, the book contains unique images of buses and coaches bringing supporters to the iconic early 1960s CND Aldermaston Marches, along with second-hand buses on construction sites at AERE Harwell and elsewhere.

Just as life in Britain generally changed dramatically during the 1960s, so did London Transport''s buses and their operations. Most striking was the abandonment of London''s trolleybuses, once the world''s biggest system, and their replacement by motorbuses. Begun in 1959 using surplus RT-types, it was completed by May 1962 using new Routemasters, designed specifically to replace them. They then continued to replace RT types, too.Traffic congestion and staff shortages played havoc with London Transport''s buses and Green Line coaches during the 1960s, one-man operation was seen as a remedy for the latter, shortening routes in the Central Area for the former. Thus the ill-fated "Reshaping Plan" was born, introducing new O.M.O. bus types. These entered trial service in 1965, and after much delay the plan was implemented from September 1968 onwards. Sadly, new MB-types, also introduced in the Country Area, soon proved a disaster! Unfortunately, owing to a government diktat, Routemaster production ended at the start of 1968, forcing LT to buy "off-the-peg" vehicles unsuited to London operation and their in-house overhaul procedures. In the days before privatisation, many bus companies adapted old buses for a variety of specialist uses as service vehicles. Using the skills and ingenuity of their workshops, buses might become, among other things, stores vans, tree loppers or uniform stores. Trolleybuses may have been converted to tower wagons to maintain the overhead wires. Some bus operators converted old buses to towing lorries to rescue broken down vehicles. Others preferred ex-military trucks such as the AEC Matador. These came with somewhat austere cabs, but here again the body shop would often come up with a custom-built body using various bus parts. Buses would also be adapted to serve as information offices or publicity buses, promoting such things as holiday tours or special ticket offers.Since privatisation, such practices have died out for a variety of reasons. Expensive, in-house workshops have largely been closed. Construction and Use Regulations have been tightened up. Emissions zone restrictions may limit the use of older less clean engines in city centres. Furthermore the modern low-floor rear-engine buses are probably less suited to such conversions.
