Pražské Jižní Město je opředeno mnoha mýty a pověstmi, je to území protikladů i nečekaných překvapení, svět tak trochu sám pro sebe, přesto je neoddělitelnou součástí metropole. Autor textu Jan Lukavec zde prožil celý svůj život a jako zasvěcená osoba podává svědectví, přemýšlí, upozorňuje, klade otázky. Autor fotografií Karel Cudlín zase život na Jižáku od začátku 80. let do současnosti pozoruje a dokumentuje (kniha obsahuje 53 celostránkových snímků). Od počátečního tristního rozbahněného prostředí, v němž chyběly chodníky, takže se do něj bořily i kočárky a při cestě na autobusovou zastávku bylo nutné použít igelitové sáčky chránící boty, se pražské Jižní Město několikrát radikálně změnilo a asi i bude nadále měnit. Pro autora, který zde žije od nejútlejšího dětství, stejně jako pro tisíce dalších obyvatel, ale zůstává "Jižák" domovem, útočištěm, základnou. Právě z této perspektivy jsou psány esejistické kapitoly o tom, jaké stopy zanechalo Jižní Město v umění, jaká je zdejší spiritualita a společenské paradoxy (a nechybí zde třeba zmínky o různých - fiktivních - vizích mytických počátků i eschatologických konců panelového města či o literárních podobách výtahového hororu a výtahové mystiky). Jde o hledisko člověka, který nemůže a nechce být zcela nezaujatý, protože zde vyrostl, zapustil zde kořeny a vychovává zde svoje děti; který si uvědomuje řadu problémů, které Jižní Město má, a přesto se pokouší o jeho opatrnou obranu. Jižní Město tak není zpodobeno jako město ideální, natož jako uskutečněná utopická vize jeho budovatelů, ale ani jako sluj plná kriminálních živlů, odosobněných ztroskotanců a zoufalců. Důležité je, že většina lidí zde bydlí ráda a může si říci: Ano, tady jsem doma.
