Na tomto abstraktním základě staví svou systematiku hudebního rytmu, metra a tempa Vladimír Tichý. Jeho obecná systematika je pak rozpracována ve dvou navazujících studiích. Tomáš Kuhn aplikuje Tichého přístup na oblast jazzové hudby a Vlastislav Matoušek na etnickou hudbu. Jejich práce dokazují obecnou platnost hierarchického principu i v jiné než novodobé evropské hudbě. Součástí knihy je věcný rejstřík společný všem třem studím, ze kterého vyplývají další zajímavé souvislosti. Jde o první z plánované řady publikací v angličtině, které by měly splatit dluh české hudební teorii, v zahraničí zatím málo známé.
