První celovečerní film slavné anglické skupiny komiků z roku 1975 vznikl po čtyřech sériích televizních skečů, kdy se všichni zúčastnění už cítili unaveni z útržkovitosti televizních půlhodinek a zatoužili si vyzkoušet své síly ve filmu s celistvějším příběhem. Scénář vznikl tak, že všichni Pythoni odjeli společně k moři na jakési "intenzivní soustředění". Natočený byl z čirého nadšení pro věc, za velmi nízký rozpočet a za hodně amatérských podmínek. Středověkou atmosféru však evokuje úžasně. Knižní podoba zachycuje kromě scénáře k filmu i scény, které byly z konečné verze vystřiženy.
