Moby Dick; or, the Whale - Herman Melville

American author Herman Melville published his first novel, Moby-Dick; or, The Whale, in 1851. The story of Ahab, the captain of the whaling ship Pequod, and his irrational pursuit for vengeance against Moby Dick, the huge white sperm whale that wounded him on a previous journey, is told in the book by the sailor Ishmael. Moby-Dick, a work that contributed to the literature of the American Renaissance, had received mixed reviews upon publication, was a commercial flop, and was out of print when the author passed away in 1891. It wasn t until the 20th century, on the centennial of its author s birth in 1919, that it gained recognition as a Great American Novel. William Faulkner expressed regret for not having written the novel himself, while D. H. Lawrence praised it as the best book of the sea ever written and one of the oddest and most wonderful books in the world. One of the most well-known starting lines in all of literature is Call me Ishmael. Moby-Dick was started by Melville in February 1850, and it was finished a year later than he had intended, in 18 months. Melville drew on his observations as a common sailor between 1841 and 1844, especially those of whalers, as well as extensive reading in the literature on whaling.

It is the horrible texture of a fabric that should be woven of ships cables and hawsers. A Polar wind blows through it, and birds of prey hover over it. So Melville wrote of his masterpiece, one of the greatest works of imagination in literary history. In part, Moby-Dick is the story of an eerily compelling madman pursuing an unholy war against a creature as vast and dangerous and unknowable as the sea itself. But more than just a novel of adventure, more than an encyclopaedia of whaling lore and legend, the book can be seen as part of its author s lifelong meditation on America. Written with wonderfully redemptive humour, Moby-Dick is also a profound inquiry into character, faith, and the nature of perception. This edition of Moby-Dick, which reproduces the definitive text of the novel, includes invaluable explanatory notes, along with maps, illustrations, and a glossary of nautical terms.

Moby Dick is the story of Captain Ahabâ ™s quest to avenge the whale that â ˜reapedâ ™ his leg. Bent as the crew is on Ahabâ ™s appalling crusade, it is equally the image of a co-operative community at work: all hands dependent on all hands, each individual responsible for the security of each.Among the crew is Ishmael, the novelâ ™s narrator, ordinary sailor, and extraordinary reader. Narrated by the sailor Ishmael, Moby-Dick is the tale of the maniacal quest of Ahab, captain of the whaling ship Pequod, as he seeks vengeance against Moby-Dick, the giant white sperm whale that bit off his leg on the ship #39;s previous voyage. More than an epic sea-story, the detailed and realistic descriptions of whale hunting and the process of extracting whale oil, as well as life aboard ship among a culturally diverse crew, are mixed with exploration of class and social status, good and evil, and the existence of God.

It will be a strange sort of a book, tho , I fear; blubber is blubber you know; tho you may get oil out of it, the poetry runs as hard as sap from a frozen maple tree;-- to cook the thing up, one must needs throw in a little fancy.... Yet I mean to give the truth of the thing, spite of this. Moby-Dick has a monumental reputation. Less well known are the novel s unexpectedly weird, funny, tantalizing, messy, and wondrous moments. Narrator Ishmael, along with the whaleship Pequod s other meanest mariners, and renegades and castaways , is beguiled into joining Captain Ahab in his vengeful pursuit of the white whale that dismasted him. But along the way, Ishmael takes the reader along many a detour into variegated ways of knowing. In a tone strangely compounded of fun and fury , Moby-Dick brings outlandish curiosity to bear on the multitudinous, oceanic scale of our diverse world. TypeeA Romance of the South Seas (Edition2024) - Herman Melville

Typee: A Romance of the South Seas by Herman Melville explores themes of freedom, cultural conflict, and the clash between civilization and primitive societies. The novel centers around a sailor who, after fleeing a whaling ship, finds himself among the Typee people in the Marquesas Islands. Initially fascinated by their idyllic way of life, the protagonist soon begins to question the true nature of their customs. The book contrasts Western notions of civilization with the seemingly simple, but complex, lifestyle of the islanders. Through the protagonist s experiences, Melville examines how cultural misunderstandings can lead to tension and fear, even in what initially appears to be a paradise. The themes of captivity and escape also play a significant role, as the protagonist navigates his feelings of entrapment within the Typee community and his desire for freedom. Ultimately, Typee delves into the complexities of human nature and the challenges of understanding and accepting different cultures.

Billy Budd, Bartleby, and Other Stories - Herman Melville

A new, definitive edition of Herman Melville’s virtuosic short stories—American classics wrought with scorching fury, grim humor, and profound beauty  Though best-known for his epic masterpiece Moby-Dick, Herman Melville also left a body of short stories arguably unmatched in American fiction. In the sorrowful tragedy of Billy Budd, Sailor; the controlled rage of Benito Cereno; and the tantalizing enigma of Bartleby, the Scrivener; Melville reveals himself as a singular storyteller of tremendous range and compelling power.

Miroslav Středa (1945) Český divadelní a filmový herec a dabér.

The Confidence-man - Herman Melville

Onboard the Fidèle, a steamboat floating down the Mississippi to New Orleans, a confidence man sets out to defraud his fellow passengers. In quick succession he assumes numerous guises - from a legless beggar and a worldly businessman to a collector for charitable causes and a cosmopolitan gentleman, who simply swindles a barber out of the price of a shave. Making very little from his hoaxes, the pleasure of trickery seems an end in itself for this slippery conman. Is he the Devil? Is his chicanery merely intended to expose the mercenary concerns of those around him? Set on April Fool s Day, The Confidence-Man (1857) is an engaging comedy of masquerades, digressions and shifting identity, and a devastating satire on the American dream.

Dick is the magnificent and imaginative final work of an author who dedicated his life to questioning the nature of reality and perception, the malleability of space and time, and the relationship between the human and the divine. Edited and introduced by Pamela Jackson and Jonathan Lethem, this will be the definitive presentation of Dick s brilliant, and epic, final work. In The Exegesis, Dick documents his eight-year attempt to fathom what he called 2-3-74 , a postmodern visionary experience of the entire universe transformed into information . In entries that sometimes ran to hundreds of pages, Dick tried to write his way into the heart of a cosmic mystery that tested his powers of imagination and invention to the limit, adding to, revising, and discarding theory after theory, mixing in dreams and visionary experiences as they occurred, and pulling it all together in three late novels known as the VALIS trilogy. In this abridgment, Jackson and Lethem serve as guides, taking the reader through the Exegesis and establishing connections with moments in Dick s life and work.

The Man in the High Castle - Philip K. Dick

A dazzling speculative novel of counterfactual history from one of America s most highly-regarded science fiction authors, Philip K. Dick s The Man in the High Castle includes an introduction by Eric Brown in Penguin Modern Classics. Philip K. Dick s acclaimed cult novel gives us a horrifying glimpse of an alternative world - one where the Allies have lost the Second World War. In this nightmare dystopia the Nazis have taken over New York, the Japanese control California and the African continent is virtually wiped out. In a neutral buffer zone in America that divides the world s new rival superpowers, lives the author of an underground bestseller. His book offers a new vision of reality - an alternative theory of world history in which the Axis powers were defeated - giving hope to the disenchanted. Does reality lie with him, or is his world just one among many others? Philip Kindred Dick (1928-82) was born in Chicago in 1928. His career as a science fiction writer comprised an early burst of short stories followed by a stream of novels, typically character studies incorporating androids, drugs, and hallucinations. His best works are generally agreed to be The Man in the High Castle and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the inspiration for the movie Blade Runner. Inside the Whale - George Orwell

George Orwell set out to make political writing into an art , and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature â “ his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership.Inside the Whale, the eighth in the Orwell s Essays series, discusses Henry Miller s controversial Tropic of Cancer, and considers the driving power behind the great books of the 1930s. Comparing Miller with other literary giants, Orwell lambasts the notion that all literature is good, forcing the reader to think for themselves, with his final words ringing in their ears: five thousand novels are published in England every year and four thousand nine hundred of them are tripe.
