With an impressive tally of 126 enemy aircraft destroyed over Poland, and a further fifty-one in France, these men, including combat pilots, flying instructors and test pilots, had to be trained to serve under the command of the RAF. They had to learn a new language that was crucial for them to be part of the Fighter Command organisation, and when they finally did, for every 100 men involved in fighting Göring’s Luftwaffe in the air, up to twenty of them were Polish. During the Battle of Britain fighter pilots from Poland destroyed over 202 enemy aircraft with 303 Squadron becoming the most successful unit in the whole of Fighter Command.Ten Polish fighter squadrons were eventually formed and went on to fight alongside their British, Canadian, Australian, Belgian, or Dutch brothers in arms in the RAF’s offensive over northern Europe that began in earnest in 1941. Major themes include British domination of the early years of carrier development, and the audacious and highly original plans for their use during World War I, which inspired later naval thinking on the potential of carrier aviation. Self-propelled anti-tank and anti-aircraft vehicles were a key element of the Nazi Army during the Second World War. Anti-tank weapons assumed great importance from the outbreak of war as combatants developed ever more effective armoured vehicles and tactics. The Germans also mounted anti-aircraft guns onboard halftracks such as the Sd.Kfz.10/5 and 10/4 armed with 2cm Flak guns, the medium Sd.Kfz.7/1 halftrack mounting 2cm flak guns, including quadruple flak guns on certain modified vehicles. Later in the war there was the Flakpanzer 38 (t) with a 2cm flak gun, an Sd.Kfz.6/2 Flak halftrack, and the Flakpanzer IV `Wirbelwind` with a rotating flak gun turret armed with quadruple 2cm flak guns. In true Images of War style the authoritative text is superbly supported by well captioned contemporary images.

During the Second World War, the airplane became a true menace. Flying faster, higher, and capable of carrying a heavier payload, air forces of the warring nations formed a formidable threat to the forces on the ground. To counter this, special anti-aircraft artillery battalions were created by the US Army. Several of these battalions, including the 452nd Antiaircraft Artillery (AAA) Battalion, were staffed by Black American soldiers. The 452nd AAA deployed in England in November 1943 and went ashore in Normandy, France, in June 1944. Assigned to XII Corps, part of General Patton’s Third Army, the 452nd AAA was a valuable asset of the US Army. Armed with the deadly 40mm Bofor’s gun and the .50 cal M45 Quadmount, these Black soldiers protected bridges, field artillery battalions and other vital installations during the Second World War. Some of the white soldiers from the field artillery battalions the 452nd AAA was protecting, doubted their abilities, but quickly came to appreciate the accuracy and coolness under fire of the Black soldiers. Credited with shooting down almost 68 hostile aircraft (one of the highest among AAA units in Europe), the 452nd AAA has rightfully earned its place in the history of the US Armed Forces during the Second World War. Although the battalion’s motto was ‘We Guard the Skyways’, it would perhaps be more appropriate to call them ‘Airplane Destroyers’. Almost 80 years after the war, this outstanding unit’s history is finally made public.

The UFO/UAP phenomenon has not diminished and has instead grown in proportion in recent years. It has now assumed the mantle of legitimacy in many countries: in government circles, the media, among the general public, even in the world’s militaries. What are less well-known, or even concealed, are the encounters our planet’s militaries have had with UFOs – some of which have proved fatal to both sides.There were reported clashes between UFOs and both Allied and German aircraft in the First World War. In the Second World War, sightings of what became known as ‘Foo Fighters’ were commonplace. After that war, UFO-related incidents increased exponentially, culminating in the wave of observations in 1947. In July of that year, the United States Air Force announced the capture of a ‘flying disk’, outside Roswell, New Mexico. The USAF quickly withdrew the announcement, but it was verified for decades by scores of reliable witnesses –military and civilian. The crash was possibly caused, albeit unintentionally, by the U.S. military. Five years later, in July 1952, for two consecutive weekends, UFOs hovered over Washington, D.C. USAF jets trying to intercept the strange craft were outrun by the UFOs.UFOs/UAP have tampered with world nuclear forces, including shutting down strategic missiles of the United States, and activating Soviet ICBMs, almost setting off an unordered (by Soviet authorities) launch of atomic warheads against the United States. USAF and RAF personnel, including a Lieutenant Colonel, also encountered a UFO on the ground, and observed others above their joint air base at Rendlesham Forest in the UK in 1980. UFOs have played ‘cat-and-mouse’ games with the latest fighter-bombers of the United States Navy since 2004, and these events have been captured on videotape as verified by the pilots, and the navy.This book takes a no-nonsense approach in its careful research, with hundreds of sources cited, including formerly classified documents and testimony regarding UFOs/UAP. As readers will discover from the mass of evidence presented in this book, it is no longer a question of whether UFOs exist or not.
