Messerschmitt Me-109, původně označený jako Messerchmit Bf-109 podle typového označení vzniklého dle původního názvu výrobce Bayerische Flugzeugbau, který se později přejmenoval na Messerschmitt Werke GMbH byl asi nejslavnějším letounem říšskoněmecké Luftwaffe, tedy vojenského letectva Německé říše. Jednalo se o stíhací celokovový jednoplošník moderní koncepce, který na počátku své vojenské kariéry byl jedním z nejlepších stíhacích letadel světa, vedle takových slavných strojů, jakým byl britský Supermarine Spitfire, nebo japonský letoun Mitsubishi Reisen, známý jako Zero. Me-109 byl vyráběn po celou II. světovou válku v řadě továren firmy Messerschmit Werke a vyrobilo se jich téměř 34000 kusů. I po válce sloužil v mnoha vojenských letectev včetně Československého vojenského letectva, poslední kusy tohoto letounu sloužily v letectvu Jugoslávie do roku 1952, Finska do roku 1954 a Španělska až do roku 1967. Bf-109 byl v průběhu války mnohokrát modernizován, i když poslední modernizace, počínaje verzí G, přinesly sice větší výkony, lepší výzbroj a zvýšení doletu, avšak současně významně zhoršily obratnost letounu a letové vlastnosti vůbec. Messerschmitt 109 postupně zastarával. Jestliže na počátku války to byl letoun, který se mohl srovnávat s tím nejlepším, co vyráběli přední výrobci letadel, zejména v druhé polovině války již zaostával za modernějšími stroji, které postupně ovládly válečné nebe v Evropě, ať již to byly britské stroje Hawker Tempest, americký Mustang, nebo sovětské Lavočkiny a Jaky. Současně mu i v Německu vyrostla zdatná a modernější konkurence ve stíhačce Focke Wulf 190. Bf-109 byl využíván v řadě bojových rolí. Především jako záchytný stíhací letoun proti spojeneckým bombardérům. V této roli byl také nejúspěšnější a mezi bombardéry zejména amerického vojenského letectva, které nálety podnikaly během dne, rozséval zkázu a smrt. Méně úspěšný byl jako doprovodný stíhací letoun při náletech na Velkou Británii, kde mu vadil jeho malý dolet, který znamenal, že piloti Luftwaffe mohli útočit jen asi 15 minut a poté se museli vrátit, nechtěli-li nouzově přistávat kdesi po cestě do Německa či Francie, nebo dokonce na moři. Ke konci války navíc již Luftwaffe neměla zkušené piloty a poslední ránu německým stíhačům uštědřili spojenečtí piloti při marném pokusu Hitlera o zvrat ve válce na západní frontě operací Wacht am Rhein – Stráž na Rýně, pokusu o průlom v Ardenách. Messerschmitt Bf-110, Me-210 a jeho vylepšený následovník Me-410, byly letouny vzešlé z požadavku Říšského ministerstva letectví na těžké stíhací a bitevní stroje, které by mohly doprovázet na cestě bombardovací letouny Luftwaffe a současně plnit náročné bitevní úlohy, jako lehké, přesné bombardování, a podporu pozemních operací. Později, což nebylo původním záměrem, plnily i úkoly nočních stíhačů. Goering pro tyto těžce vyzbrojené a výkonné stroje vybral označení Kampfzerstoerer, tedy bojový ničitel, ale v pozdější době, jak se měnilo jejich využití, byly letouny Bf-110 označovány jako noční stíhačky, zatímco Me-210 a 410 si podržely označení Zerstoerer. Messerschmitt Bf-110 byl vyvíjen od roku 1934 a již v roce 1937 byl zařazen do výzbroje. První série měly jen málo výkonné motory a v důsledku toho nedostatečný bojový výkon. Zejména v Bitvě o Anglii, kde byl ovšem Bf-110 používán k úkolům, pro které nebyl vyvinut, získal nedobrou pověst. Měl být proto nahrazen novým letounem Messerschmitt Me-210. Ten odstartoval k prvním bojovým letům v roce 1941 a zanedlouho byla jeho výroba zastavena pro naprostou nezpůsobilost letounu k úkolům, pro které byl určen a navíc pro nebezpečné chování při letu. Po náročném přepracování draku, křídel a ocasních ploch, na kterém spolupracovali odborníci maďarských leteckých závodů, byla v roce 1942 výroba obnovena a typ byl, s novými výkonnými motory Daimler Benz DB-603 přeznačen na Me-410 a nazván Hornisse – Sršeň, což nebylo v Luftwaffe příliš obvyklé. Nikdy se však nejednalo o příliš kvalitní letoun, jeho letové vlastnosti byly nejvýše průměrné. Neúspěch letounu Me-210 dal nový impuls vývoji a výrobě Messerschmittu Bf- 110. Z toho se stal nakonec velmi kvalitní a úspěšný stroj, s vynikajícími letovými vlastnostmi, užívaný ponejvíce jako noční stíhač. Messerschmitt Bf-110 skončil svoji bojovou kariéru v poslední dny války. Poslední letouny bojovaly ještě v Bitvě o Berlín. Bylo jich vyrobeno více než 6000 kusů, čtyřikrát více, než jejich potenciálního pokračovatele, stroje Me-210410. Nejúspěšnější německý noční stíhač Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer dosáhl svých 121 nočních sestřelů právě na stroji Bf-110. Messerchmitty 410 byly z bojových operací stahovány od podzimu roku 1944 a dále sloužily jako průzkumné letouny a bojů se zúčastnily již jen víceméně náhodně. Celkem bylo Messerschmittů Me 210 a 410 vyrobeno něco málo přes 1500 kusů.

Junkers Ju-87 B Stuka Německý hloubkový bombardér Junkers Ju-87 Stuka byl letoun, který byl výsledkem doktríny říšskoněmeckého vojenského letectva Luftwaffe, která při bombardování jak pevných vojenských i civilních cílů, tak vojenských jednotek a obrněných vozidel, upřesňovala přesné a relativně velmi účinné hloubkové bombardování. Junkers Ju-87 vzlétl poprvé v roce 1935, kdy Luftwaffe vyzvala letecké výrobce ke konstrukci střemhlavého bombardéru, který měl nahradit zastaralé Henschely 123. Na počátku II. světové války rozséval tento bombardér hrůzu, zkázu a smrt, všude kde se objevil. Poprvé byl bojově použit při přepadení Polska. Útočil na letiště, vojenské kolony, ničil vojenské objekty, ale také bombardoval polská města, kde využíval navíc psychologického efektu vyjící sirény namontované na příďovém podvozku. Rovněž jeho použití ve válce na Západě, v Holandsku, Belgii a Francii bylo nesmírně účinné. Letoun účinně chráněný stíhacími Messerschmitty ničil přesným bombardováním vojenské i nevojenské cíle. U Luftwaffe a v Německu vůbec, se stal předmětem jakéhosi kultu, kdy spolu s působením nacistické propagandy získal aureolu všeničící univerzální a přesné zbraně. Na počátku německé invaze do Sovětského svazu úspěšně útočil na sovětské vojenské kolony a obrněná vozidla, čímž vyrovnával sovětskou převahu v tancích, jak kvalitativní, tak kvantitativní. Naopak v Bitvě o Británii byly jeho úspěchy minimální. Ačkoliv občas způsoboval značné škody útoky na britské a spojenecké lodi kolem jižního pobřeží Velké Británie, projevila se již jeho zastaralá koncepce, nedostatečné pancéřování, malá rychlost a slabá výzbroj. Junkers prostě nebyl schopen odolat britským Hurricanům a Spifirům, které britské území bránily. Podobně se již příliš neosvědčil při operacích u Kurského oblouku, kde neměl potřebné technické zázemí, které potřeboval k předletové přípravě.Přes problémy, které jeho operační použití přinášelo, přes malou bojovou účinnost, srovnáváme-li jej s bombardéry Spojenců, se stal symbolem zla a zkázy, kterou válka přinesla, byl nejznámějším německým bombardérem a pravděpodobně nejznámějším německým letounem pro civilní obyvatelstvo států, na které Hitlerova Třetí říše zaútočila. Messerchmitt Me-262 Schwalbe (Vlaštovka)Souběžně ve Velké Británii a v Německu probíhal od počátku třicátých let 20. století vývoj proudového motoru vhodného pro pohon letadel. V Německu však byl vývoj poněkud rychlejší, protože němečtí průmyslníci byli méně konzervativní a také proto, že od nástupu Hitlera k moci Německo budovalo nové, moderní ozbrojené síly, které vstřebávaly vše nejlepší, co se v oblasti techniky objevilo. Prvním, kdo se konstrukcí proudového motoru a stavbě proudového letadla v Říši věnoval, byl konstruktér a majitel letecké firmy Heinkel Flugzeugwerke Ernst Heinkel, který využil patentů Hanse von Ohaina. Jeho letoun Heinkel 178 byl první „jet“, který kdy vzlétl a Heinkel He 280 byl první stíhací proudový letoun na světě, v podstatě připravený k výrobě. Ale tím, kdo získal první zakázky Říšského ministerstva letectví na výrobu prototypů a později i sériových letadel nebyl Ernst Heinkel, jehož vztahy s nacisty nebyly nejlepší, ale jeho konkurent Willy Messerschmitt, šéfkonstruktér a majitel stejnojmenné firmy, dodavatel například i nejrozšířenější německé stíhačky Messerschmitt Me (Bf)- 109. Me -262 Schwalbe vzlétl poprvé s proudovým motorem teprve 18. července 1942, zatímco první proudový Heinkel již 7. září 1939 a Heinkel He-280, vlastně již hotová stíhačka, 22. září 1940. Výroba Messerschmittu 262 nabíhala teprve od června do listopadu 1943 a první letka vybavený těmito výkonnými stroji, které neměly na obloze konkurenta, byla vytvořena teprve v červenci 1944. Výkony letadla byly skvělé – maximální rychlost 870 km/hod, dostup 11,5 km, dolet přes tisíc kilometrů. Letoun byl dobře vyzbrojen a v rukou zkušeného pilota se stal smrtonosnou zbraní nejen pro bombardéry, ale i pro pístové vrtulové stíhačky Spojenců. Ale na to, aby něco změnil na vzdušné nadvládě spojeneckých, letectev bylo již příliš pozdě. Většina z vyrobených 1430 strojů byla zničena ve vzduchu, nebo na letištích Třetí říše, po pár kusech si vzali spojenci ke zkouškám. Například Britové ke srovnávacím zkouškám s Glosterem Meteor, první britskou proudovou stíhačkou, která byla poprvé nasazena jen o pár dní později, než Me-262, 27. 7. 1944. Dvanáct strojů sloužilo po válce v Československém vojenském letectvu.

On 17 July 1940, Oberst Josef Kammhuber took command of the Luftwaffe⠙s 1 Nachtjagddivision after his release from French captivity. He was tasked with combating RAF bombers, which were increasingly threatening Germany during the Battle of Britain. Kammhuber⠙s strategy, the Fernnachtjagd (long-range night fighter missions), focused on targeting bombers while they were vulnerable during takeoff and return to bases. Kammhuber believed that converted German bombers like the Dornier Do 17Z and Junkers Ju 88, flown by experienced crews, would be ideal for these missions. The first claims from Fernnachtjagd occurred on 23 July 1940, when Luftwaffe pilots mistakenly shot down a Bristol Blenheim, thinking it was a Vickers Wellington. These night missions continued over the next few years, with varying success. By 1942, the campaign shifted to a ⠜stopgap⠝ phase, and the introduction of the Messerschmitt Me 210 and Me 410 marked further changes in the tactics and aircraft used. While Fernnachtjagd operations had some impact in 1941, by 1944, their effectiveness had diminished. Notably, during the Allies Berlin raid on 19 February 1944, the Luftwaffe claimed more RAF bombers than the entire Me 410 campaign achieved in 14 months.

The Highland Clearances was a dark episode in Scottish history when many thousands of people were forced off lands that they and their kin had lived on for generations. He also raised a lot of money to help poor people in the Hebrides, particularly during the infamous Potato Famine. The Royal Navy invented the aircraft carrier and most of the key innovations which have enabled carriers to remain effective, exploiting continuing changes in aircraft technology, from biplanes to supersonic jets. Major themes include British domination of the early years of carrier development, and the audacious and highly original plans for their use during World War I, which inspired later naval thinking on the potential of carrier aviation. The introduction of armoured flight decks in the 1930s was only the first of a sequence of British innovations, the most important of which made it possible for carriers to operate jet aircraft (the angled deck, the steam catapult, and the mirror landing sight). These British developments, particularly the steam catapult, were crucial to the survival of the US carrier force in the postwar era, to an extent often forgotten. Later the Royal Navy produced the first commando carriers, and played a crucial role in the VSTOL carrier revolution, and continues to demonstrate originality and innovation as seen in the current pair of large carriers.
