Pro mladou generaci se Hesse nechtěně stal jakýmsi guru, mladí z něho čerpali inspiraci pro svůj boj proti autoritám, pro odmítání utilitárnosti západní civilizace, přejímali jeho intenzivní vztah k přírodě, k východním filozofiím a náboženstvím atd. Hesse však v podstatě nikdy neopustil svou křesťanskožidovskou orientaci a dalšími vlivy ji pouze obohacoval.
