The ''A4'' class of Pacific locomotives, designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London & North Eastern Railway in the 1930s, was arguably the most distinctive and most famous type of steam locomotive built in Britain. Starting in 1902 with three 0-8-0s for the Great Central Railway, J G Robinson''s heavy freight locomotive fleet grew rapidly as part of General Manager Sam Fay''s strategy to rescue the company from financial difficulties. The Stockton & Darlington Railway, which opened in 1825, was the world''s first public railway to use steam locomotives.
