The Devil's Harvest : A Ruthless Killer, a Terrorized Community, and the Search for Justice in California's Central Valley

This suspenseful true story of a drug cartel hitman who got away with murder after murder in California's Central Valley over three decades reveals how the criminal justice system fails our most vulnerable immigrant communities. On the surface, fifty-eight-year-old Jose Martinez didn't seem evil or even that remarkable—just a regular neighbor, good with cars and devoted to his family. But in between taking his children to Disneyland and visiting his mom, Martinez was also one of the most skilled professional killers police had ever seen.He tracked one victim to one of the wealthiest corners of America, a horse ranch in Santa Barbara, and shot him dead in the morning sunlight, setting off a decades-long manhunt. He shot another man, a farmworker, right in front of his young wife as they drove to work in the fields. The widow would wait decades for justice. Those were murders for hire. Others he killed for vengeance. How did Martinez manage to evade law enforcement for so long with little more than a slap on the wrist? Because he understood a dark truth about the criminal justice system: if you kill the "right people"—people who are poor, who aren't white, and who don't have anyone to ... Prosecuting the Powerful: War Crimes and the Battle for Justice - Steve Crawshaw

Could we ever see Vladimir Putin in the dock for his crimes? What about a Western ally like Benjamin Netanyahu? Putting a country's leader on trial once seemed unthinkable. But as journalist and human rights advocate Steve Crawshaw describes in Prosecuting the Powerful - a blend of vivid reportage and gripping history - a series of remarkable changes in recent years means that, despite many challenges, both scenarios are now a possibility. Drawing on his on-the-ground reporting from the front lines of justice in Ukraine and Israel, as well as earlier encounters with Serbian leader Slobodan Milo evic and other war criminals, Crawshaw tells the story of the long struggle for accountability. Beginning with the origins of the Geneva Conventions in the 19th century, the book travels via Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term "genocide" and pressed for its punishment, and the Syrian police photographer who helped put a torturer behind bars, up to the fierce arguments today over who exactly the International Criminal Court in The Hague should hold accountable for war crimes. Survivors are determined to achieve change. As Crawshaw argues, Western double standards cannot be allowed to tip the scales of justice.

The Search for Bond - Robert Sellers

Only six men can lay claim to wearing the famous Savile Row tuxedo of James Bond; more people have stepped on the moon. Yet, hundreds more came within an inch of winning the coveted 007 role–the pinnacle for so many actors. For the very first time, The Search for Bond tells the often-extraordinary story of how cinema’s most famous secret agent was cast, featuring exclusive interviews with many of the actors who were at one time either considered to play Bond, interviewed for the role, or went as far as to be screen tested. Their memories and stories are fascinating and give an ‘insiders’ glimpse into the process of how the Bond producers, Broccoli and Saltzman, came up with the right man to play their famous spy. With Daniel Craig having vacated the role, the circus surrounding the announcement of his successor has created a tabloid frenzy, and the release of The Search for Bond ought to generate plenty of interest in the media.

Man's Search for Ultimate Meaning - Viktor E. Frankl

Viktor Frankl is known to millions as the author of Man''s Search for Meaning, his harrowing Holocaust memoir. In this book, he goes more deeply into the ways of thinking that enabled him to survive imprisonment in a concentration camp and to find meaning in life in spite of all the odds. Here, he expands upon his groundbreaking ideas and searches for answers about life, death, faith and suffering. Believing that there is much more to our existence than meets the eye, he says: ''No one will be able to make us believe that man is a sublimated animal once we can show that within him there is a repressed angel.''In Man''s Search for Ultimate Meaning, Frankl explores our sometimes unconscious desire for inspiration or revelation. He explains how we can create meaning for ourselves and, ultimately, he reveals how life has more to offer us than we could ever imagine.

Man's Search for Meaning - Viktor E. Frankl

We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life-daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual. When Man''s Search for Meaning was first published in 1959, it was hailed by Carl Rogers as "one of the outstanding contributions to psychological thought in the last fifty years." Now, more than forty years and 4 million copies later, this tribute to hope in the face of unimaginable loss has emerged as a true classic. Man''s Search for Meaning--at once a memoir, a self-help book, and a psychology manual-is the story of psychiatrist Viktor Frankl''s struggle for survival during his three years in Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps. Yet rather than "a tale concerned with the great horrors," Frankl focuses in on the "hard fight for existence" waged by "the great army of unknown and unrecorded." Promoting Justice Across Borders - Lucia M. Rafanelli

Global political actors, from states and NGOs to activist groups and individuals, exert influence in societies beyond their own in myriad ways--including via public criticism, consumer boycotts, divestment campaigns, sanctions, and forceful intervention. Often, they do so in the name of justice-promotion. While attempts to promote justice in other societies can do good, they are also often subject to moral criticism and raise several serious moral questions. For example, are there ways to promote one''s own ideas about justice in another society while still treating its members tolerantly? Are there ways to do so without disrespecting their legitimate political institutions or undermining their collective self-determination?To understand the ethics of justice-promoting intervention, Lucia M. Rafanelli moves beyond the traditional focus of other scholarship in this area on states waging wars or employing other conventional tools of coercive foreign policy. Specifically, Rafanelli constructs a philosophically-grounded and nuanced ethics of intervention to determine when attempts to promote justice in foreign societies are morally permissible.Promoting Justice Across Borders develops ethical standards for justice-promoting intervention that call on us to rethink received notions about the ordinary bounds of politics, and to abandon the thought that politics does and should take place primarily within the state. ... A Certain Justice - Haiyan Lee

A much-needed account of the hierarchy of justice that defines China’s unique political-legal culture. To many outsiders, China has an image as a realm of Oriental despotism where law is at best window dressing and at worst an instrument of coercion and tyranny. In this highly original contribution to the interdisciplinary field of law and humanities, Haiyan Lee contends that this image arises from a skewed understanding of China’s political-legal culture, particularly the failure to distinguish what she calls high justice and low justice. In the Chinese legal imagination, Lee shows, justice is a vertical concept, with low justice between individuals firmly subordinated to the high justice of the state. China’s political-legal culture is marked by a mistrust of law’s powers, and as a result, it privileges substantive over procedural justice. Calling on a wide array of narratives—stories of crime and punishment, subterfuge and exposé, guilt and redemption—A Certain Justice helps us recognize the fight for justice outside the familiar arenas of liberal democracy and the rule of law.

Community-Based Mental Healthcare for Psychosis - Peter Dierinck

This eye-opening book explores the need for, and how to successfully organize, community mental health teams that provide in-home care and treatment for people experiencing mental health difficulties, particularly those suffering with psychosis. With an emphasis on community-based care and democratic psychiatry, the book presents two paradigm shifts necessary to bring mental healthcare directly into the community. The first is shifting perceptions from thinking of patients to recognizing those in need of care as members of the public moving away from a biomedical diagnostic approach. The second shift is the provision of support for the community environment, its families, friends, and neighbours to pave the way for hospitableness towards people with mental health issues in a way that encourages compassion, empathy, and a respect for differences. Through clinical case material, anthropological and phenomenological methods, and personal experience in community-based care, Peter Dierinck presents new models for sheltered housing and innovative ways for struggling individuals to secure paid work within a community system. Community-based Mental Healthcare for Psychosis is important reading for psychiatric professionals, clinicians, social workers, caregivers, and all mental health professionals looking after psychiatric patients with complex care needs.

Man´s Search for Meaning: the Classic Tribute to Hope From the Holocaust - Viktor E. Frankl

16 MILLION COPIES SOLD''A book to read, to cherish, to debate, and one that will ultimately keep the memories of the victims alive'' John Boyne, author of The Boy in the Striped PyjamasA prominent Viennese psychiatrist before the war, Viktor Frankl was uniquely able to observe the way that both he and others in Auschwitz coped (or didn''t) with the experience. He noticed that it was the men who comforted others and who gave away their last piece of bread who survived the longest - and who offered proof that everything can be taken away from us except the ability to choose our attitude in any given set of circumstances. The sort of person the concentration camp prisoner became was the result of an inner decision and not of camp influences alone. Frankl came to believe man''s deepest desire is to search for meaning and purpose. This outstanding work offers us all a way to transcend suffering and find significance in the art of living.

Flowers for Elephants - Peter Martell

When northern Kenyans find elephant bones, they lay down blossoms and branches as a mark of respect, honouring their crucial connection with the wildlife they live alongside. In our changing world, these values are vitally important. For decades, northern Kenya was one step away from a warzone, on the frontlines of climate change and habitat loss. People slept with their shoes on, fearing attack. Wildlife was decimated. Yet, facing the most extreme challenges, people united. What began as a last-ditch effort to save rhinos from extinction sparked a remarkable return of wildlife, with the once-struggling cattle ranch Lewa named a UN World Heritage Site for its outstanding value to humanity. This served as a catalyst for much broader action. Communities created a network of protected lands across an area larger than Switzerland. Through conservation, they built peace, driving social, environmental and political change. From tracking elephants through the bush to gun battles with bandits and treks through Al-Qaeda territory, Peter Martell tells the exciting story of a conservation movement that gives hope. At a time when humanity is reassessing its broken relationship with nature, these communities offer an inspirational blueprint, proving that environmental change does not have to divide, but ... Viral Justice - Ruha Benjamin

From the author of Race After Technology, an inspiring vision of how we can build a more just world—one small change at a time“A true gift to our movements for justice.”—Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim CrowLong before the pandemic, Ruha Benjamin was doing groundbreaking research on race, technology, and justice, focusing on big, structural changes. But the twin plagues of COVID-19 and anti-Black police violence inspired her to rethink the importance of small, individual actions. Part memoir, part manifesto, Viral Justice is a sweeping and deeply personal exploration of how we can transform society through the choices we make every day. Vividly recounting her personal experiences and those of her family, Benjamin shows how seemingly minor decisions and habits could spread virally and have exponentially positive effects. She recounts her father’s premature death, illuminating the devastating impact of the chronic stress of racism, but she also introduces us to community organizers who are fostering mutual aid and collective healing. Through her brother’s experience with the criminal justice system, we see the trauma caused by policing practices and mass imprisonment, but we also witness family members finding strength as they come together to demand justice for their loved ones. ... The Search for Winchester’s Anglo-Saxon Minsters - Martin Biddle

The ancient cathedral of Old Minster and the abbey church of New Minster once stood at the heart of Anglo-Saxon Winchester. Buildings of the first importance, honoured by Anglo-Saxon and Norman kings, these great churches were later demolished and their locations lost. Through an extensive programme of archaeological excavation begun in 1961, and as a result of years of research, the story of these lost minsters can now be revealed. Written by Martin Biddle, Director of the Winchester Excavations Committee and Research Unit, and marvellously illustrated by Simon Hayfield, The Search for Winchester’s Anglo-Saxon Minsters traces the history of these excavations from 1961 to 1970 and shows how they led to the discovery of the Old and New Minsters, bringing back to life the history, archaeology and architecture of Winchester’s greatest Anglo-Saxon buildings.
