Living Torches in the Soviet Bloc presents the lives of those who chose self-immolation as a radical form of protest against the political oppression of Communist regimes in the Soviet Bloc between 1966-1989. While more than fifty such cases were identified during the relevant period, Petr Blažek focuses here on the twenty-one cases in which at least partial political motivation is apparent from historical sources.Many of the cases of the "living torches” were a radical response to the August 1968 occupation of Czechoslovakia by the armies of five Warsaw Pact member states and the suppression of the Prague Spring. After January 1969, the self-immolation of Jan Palach evoked a large wave of followers not only in Czechoslovakia, but also abroad, and greatly influenced other cases of "living torches” which continued to appear in the Soviet Bloc until the end of the 1980s.Although the conditions in the Soviet Bloc states were sometimes fundamentally different, these cases of self-immolation across states share a common disapproval of the totalitarian form of rule. They were often drastic responses from members of occupied nations, most of whom were Czechs, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, and Poles, who rejected the enforced Communist regime and Soviet military presence. Some decided to sacrifice their lives to wake others from indifference and resignation. Even several decades later, their shocking acts not only provoke, but also lead us to reflect on fundamental questions of human life.

Názory a vzpomínky šestadvaceti členů Výboru na obranu nespravedlivě stíhaných (VONS) jsou v knize doplněny mnoha fotografiemi a dokumenty. Historici Petr Blažek a Jaroslav Pažout diskutovali s účastníky VONS 19. října 2007 v bytě Kamily Bendové na Karlově náměstí v Praze. Místo to bylo vskutku symbolické, neboť právě zde členové VONS v dubnu 1978 přijali své základní prohlášení. Diskuse byla rozdělena do čtyř tématických celků. První byl věnován okolnostem vzniku VONS a jeho působení do zásahu moci proti jeho členům v květnu 1979. Druhý pak praktickému působení výboru a organizaci jeho práce. Třetí blok byl zaměřen na represi proti členům výboru, zejména ze strany Státní bezpečnosti. Závěrečná část pak byla orientována na působení VONS po roce 1989. Zajímavé svědectví o významné kapitole českého historie zde zazní například z úst Václava Havla, Petra Uhla, Anny Šabatové, Petrušky Šustrové, Václava Malého, Zbyňka Hejdy, Kamily Bendové a dalších.Součástí knihy je CD, na němž jsou všechna čísla časopisu Informace o Chartě 77 (Infoch) od roku 1978 do roku 1992. Infochy mimo jiné obsahují i všechna sdělení VONS. Výbor na obranu nespravedlivě stíhaných (VONS) založila 27. dubna 1978 skupina signatářů Charty 77, kteří se rozhodli, že budou sledovat případy policejní a justiční svévole. Zaměřili se na kauzy osob trestně stíhaných či vězněných za projevy svého přesvědčení. Postiženým pomáhali se zajišťováním právního zastoupení, zprostředkováním finanční a jiné pomoci. Popsána jsou utajovaná místa, odkud pracovnici tajné policie sledovali vybrané objekty. Publikace vychází z plenérové výstavy, kterou společně připravilo Muzeum paměti XX. století a Museum Kampa ve spolupráci s Archivem bezpečnostních složek a Prague City Tourism. The present Czech-English publication publication focuses on the State Security (StB) Surveillance Administration and photographs of notable personalities, important events and places taken by its employees during the Communist regime. For example, the surveillance operations of the State Security against Vaclav Havel, Pavel Kohout, Jan Patočka, Cardinal František Tomašek, František Kriegel, Jan Werich and Western diplomats are presented here. The structures of the Surveillance Administration, its staff, commanders and collaborators are also described, and the service career of Antonin Kavan, who headed the StB Surveillance Administration for several decades, is presented. Further to this, attention is paid to the intelligence technologies used by the StB Surveillance Administration. Last but not least, the secret locations (‘footholds') from which the secret police monitored selected people and events are described here. The publication is based on the open-air exhibition organised jointly by the Twentieth Century Memorial Museum and Museum Kampa in cooperation with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, the Security Forces Archive and Prague City Tourism.

Od roku 1961 až do roku 1989 byl s přestávkami úspěšně nasazen do mnoha akcí Státní bezpečnosti. Kniha má dvě části. První je interpretační studie Miroslava Vodrážky nazvaná Historie jako rozplétání otevřenosti života a díla. Její titul je inspirován teoretickým spisem filosofa postmoderny Umberta Eca Otevřené dílo. Studie se zaměřuje na zkoumání života a díla Zbyňka Fišera (alias Egona Bondyho) a nejrůznějších poloh bondyovského mýtu, který je specifický tím, že byl dlouhodobě vytvářen nejen samotným autorem, různými aktéry a skupinami, ale zejména nebyl možný bez tajných plánů StB. Druhou částí knihy je edice archivních dokumentů Státní bezpečnosti z let 1949-1989, které vybral a kritickým poznámkovým aparátem opatřil historik Petr Blažek.

Drawing upon Soviet sources, this book assesses the evolving organization, uniforms, insignia, weaponry and personal equipment of Soviet naval infantry units from 1917 to 1991. Featuring eight plates of specially commissioned artwork alongside carefully chosen archive photographs, this study charts the history and appearance of the Soviet Union’s naval infantry, from the October Revolution to the end of the Soviet era. Although Russian naval infantry achieved fame during the October Revolution they were quickly disbanded, only being re-established in 1939. Following the Axis invasion of 1941 some 500,000 Soviet Navy personnel served on land, fighting in the defence of Leningrad, Odessa and Sevastopol and the recapture of the Crimea in 1943–44; Soviet naval troops also participated in the invasion of Manchuria in 1945. During the Cold War era the Soviet Union developed an amphibious assault capability that had a vital strategic role – to capture an aggressor’s geographical exits to the oceans and thereby forestall threats to Soviet submarine bases. Naval infantry forces could deploy a wealth of firepower assets, while the use of amphibious ships, hovercraft and helicopters aided their rapid deployment, even amid ice-bound terrain in the Arctic. All of these developments are described and illustrated in absorbing detail in this study.

The publication presents, with the help of contemporary documents and photographs, the fabricated political trial with JUDr. Milada Horáková and other co-defendants, which took place in the spring of 1950 upon the instructions of the leadership of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. In the preparation of this political show-trial, Soviet advisers sent to Czechoslovakia in the autumn of 1949 took active part. The trial was accompanied by a massive defamatory and propaganda campaign. The publication is based on the eponymous exhibition organised in 2020 to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of these tragic events.
