Mezi autory se objevují nejvýznamnější čeští myslitelé druhé poloviny dvacátého století (Milan Kundera, Karel Kosík, Robert Kalivoda a další). Od konce padesátých let se český kulturní týdeník zvaný Literární noviny nesměle pokoušel znovu začlenit českou kulturu do evropského kontextu a naopak. Začalo se to dařit až začátkem šedesátých let a na jejich konci se to v podstatě podařilo. LN se staly jedním z nejlepších evropských časopisů svého druhu a psalo se o tom všude vůkol, ač nebylo mnoho těch, kteří je dokázali přečíst. Ale i to se překonalo a jejich proslulost se trvale zvyšovala. Až to všechno skončilo pod pásy sovětských tanků. Na podzim 1990 požádal A. J. Liehm Milana Kunderu o příspěvek pro česko-slovenskou Lettre. Kundera tento fejeton nazval O slavnosti a hostech: Milý Tondo, když jsi mi řekl o příspěvek pro první české číslo Lettre internationale, myslel jsem, že nic nemám. Navrhoval jsi mi (jako už tolikrát), abych přeložil do češtiny něco z toho, co jsem v cizině napsal o českých věcech. Ano, napovídal jsem mnoho interview, napsal mnoho textů týkajících se okupovaného Československa, české hudby, české literatury, mých kolegů, byla by z toho dost tlustá kniha, ale nestála by za vydání, protože všechno, co jsem říkal, bylo příliš poznamenáno apologetickou tendencí, didaktickým účelem: Mluvil jsem k neznalému cizímu publiku a neměl jsem intelektuální ctižádost objevit něco nečekaného či nového; bez takové ctižádosti si žádný text nezaslouží přežít okolnosti svého vzniku. Zbývá sedm esejů, na kterých mi stále záleží, ale které se Československa netýkají. Vydal jsem je v knize L art du roman v roce 1986 a už dlouho se je chystám přeložit do češtiny. Překládat sama sebe do svého jazyka je však nezábavná práce, a odkládám ji proto z roku na rok. Chtěl jsem ti tedy nejdříve říci ne , ale pak se mi najednou vynořily vzpomínky. Vzpomněl jsem si na Literární noviny z druhé půle šedesátých let. Ať mne nikdo nepodezírá z falešné emfáze, když řeknu, že takový týdeník (psaný nikoli žurnalisty, ale spisovateli, kritiky, filozofy, týdeník zasahující do politiky z hlediska kultury a mající ohromný vliv na vývoj věcí) neexistoval tehdy (ale ani potom, což jsem si velice jasně uvědomil ve Francii), nikde na světě. Ty jsi byl kosmopolitní duší Literárek a zároveň jakýmsi ministrem zahraničí české opoziční kultury. Pak přišlo Pražské jaro a s ním myšlenka založit deník: Lidové noviny. Karel Kosík se stal předsedou jejich správní rady a ty šéfredaktorem. Věděl jsem, že bys byl z těch novin udělal jedny z nejlepších v Evropě. Žel, tvoje Lidové noviny nikdy nevyšly, přišli Rusové a tys odešel do ciziny. Zvláštní je, že tvá emigrace, která se mohla zdát blouděním, nebyla než pokračováním cesty za stále stejným cílem .... Kruh se uzavírá, je to tvůj symbolický návrat do Prahy, a to je slavnost, při které bych nechtěl chybět, tím spíš , že chybím u většiny slavností, protože se od roku 1969 stahuji čím dál víc do ústraní, z něhož už sotva kdy budu chtít a budu umět vystoupit. Pošlu tedy na tu slavnost místo sebe alespoň sedm písmen ze slovníku, který tvoří jednu část L art du roman. Víc ti jich nedám, protože právě sedmička, jak bys měl vědět, je číslo, které přináší štěstí.

První z nich, nazvaný v knize Nesamozřejmost národa, je záznamem vstupního projevu Milana Kundery na sjezdu spisovatelů v roce 1967. Upozornil v něm na ohroženost kultury a vyzval k návratu k evropským hodnotám, protože překračování národních kultur považoval za výrazný rys českého bytí v dějinách. Druhý text, francouzsky psaný esej Unesený Západ aneb Tragédie střední Evropy (přeložený do češtiny Annou Kareninovou), byl poprvé otištěn v roce 1983 v časopise Le Débat.
