Když si však Spojené státy a evropské velmoci vynutily otevření Země vycházejícího Slunce, otřáslo to jejím politickým systémem. Vnitřní konflikty provázející obnovení moci císaře (restaurace Meidži) znamenaly definitivní tečku za dominancí samurajů, jež trvala více než 800 let. Během tohoto dlouhého období bylo Japonsko svědkem vzestupu a následného úpadku a pádu mocných rodů, nesčetných bitev a obléhání, příběhů věrnosti a statečnosti, ale také zrady a neschopnosti. Po letech otřesů, úkladných vražd, válek a revolucí se samurajové náhle stali minulostí a Japonsko se vydalo vstříc modernímu světu. Tato kniha vůbec poprvé nabízí pohled na tento složitý a bouřlivý proces v českém jazyce.
