Novelu niekoľkokrát úspešne sfilmovali, ale celosvetovo ju preslávila najmä rovnomenná opera Dmitrija Šostakoviča. Ruská a neskôr sovietska kultúrna byrokracia Leskova považovala za otravného (buržoázneho) spisovateľa, ktorý svojou „surovou, erotickou a zločineckou“ novelou škodí dobrému menu ruskej literatúry a prózu bola ochotná akceptovať len ako odstrašujúci príklad neprístojnej ženskej zmyselnosti.
