Ernest "Andy" Andrews začal výcvik kulometníka v červenci 1943 v alabamském Fort McClellanu. Začátkem roku 1944 připlul do Velké Británie k dalšímu výcviku před Dnem D. Jeho rota, součást 1. pěší divize, odplula z Anglie 5. června na USS Henrico. Kvůli problémům s výsadkovým člunem se Andy dostal na pláž Omaha až brzy večer 6. června, ale přesto z toho měl hrůzné zážitky. Při bojích v Normandii škrábla Andyho střela, a když se mu rána zanítila, evakuovali ho koncem července do Anglie. Poté se vrátil, aby se zúčastnil průlomu z Normandie. Po rychlém průniku Francií se koncem srpna podílel na drtivé porážce řady ustupujících německých jednotek blízko Monsu v Belgii a jeho jednotka v polovině září dorazila k Cáchám. Andyho družstvo měsíc bránilo pozici v bunkru na Siegfriedově linii proti opakovaným německým útokům a po kapitulaci Cách si probojovávalo cestu Hürtgenským lesem, aby obsadilo Kótu 232. 19. listopadu brzy ráno se Andy zúčastnil své nejtěžší bitvy za války, když se Němci pokusili znovu získat Kótu 232. Andy utrpěl zranění ramene. Po operaci a měsíční rekonvalescenci se znovu vrátil k rotě H, aby bojoval v Bitvě v Ardenách. Jeho jednotka se pak podílela na rychlém tažení od řeky Rour k Rýnu a potom se tato bitva rozšířila na předmostí u Remagenu. Při průlomu z předmostí narazilo jeho družstvo na německou tankovou jednotku a Andy jen těsně unikl smrti. Po rychlém postupu do oblasti Paderbornu se jeho jednotka hnala do německého pohoří Harz, kde se wehrmacht pokoušel zorganizovat poslední odpor. Andyho jednotka ukončila boje v Čechách, kde byl začátkem května svědkem německé kapitulace. Po okupační službě se Andy v říjnu 1945 vrátil do Států. Válka formovala v mnoha směrech jeho poválečný život a v roce 1994 byl na své první návštěvě ze tří na evropských bojištích, kde bojoval.
