Military robots and other, potentially autonomous robotic systems such as unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) could soon be introduced to the battlefield. Look further into the future and we may see autonomous micro- and nanorobots armed and deployed in swarms of thousands or even millions. This growing automation of warfare may come to represent a major discontinuity in the history of warfare: humans will first be removed from the battlefield and may one day even be largely excluded from the decision cycle in future high-tech and high-speed robotic warfare. Although the current technological issues will no doubt be overcome, the greatest obstacles to automated weapons on the battlefield are likely to be legal and ethical concerns. Armin Krishnan explores the technological, legal and ethical issues connected to combat robotics, examining both the opportunities and limitations of autonomous weapons. He also proposes solutions to the future regulation of military robotics through international law.

Při rešerši v jednom výtisku National Geographic však objevil fotoreportáž o armádách jihoamerických nájezdných mravenců, kde byli mravenci znázorněni z absolutní blízkosti při sociálních činnostech. Tato reportáž ho natolik zaujala, že se rozhodl na mravencích ilustrovat kolektivní inteligenci. Jako druh si zvolil mravence lesní. Tyto mravence mohl sledovat přímo v jejich přirozeném prostředí a přitom si pořídit vlastní názorný materiál. Na základě vlastních skic, autorských i posbíraných fotografií a vědeckých nákresů zhotovil Armin Schieb digitální 3D modely mraveniště a další obrazové motivy. Nakonec modely v počítači naaranžoval do scenérií a díky realistickému prosvícení jim propůjčil dokonalou scénickou atmosféru. Při vzniku knihy pro něj bylo zcela zásadní znázornit mravence a jejich okolí věrohodně, hlavním cílem knihy totiž je, aby se čtenář s těmito nenápadnými a podivuhodnými obyvateli naší přírody seznámil. Pro Armina Schieba je velice důležité, aby byli mravenci vnímáni jako živočichové, proto se zcela vědomě vyhýbá jakémukoli hrozivému vyobrazení. Přál by si, aby úspěch knihy přispěl k tomu, že se u veřejnosti probudí zájem o mravence a respekt vůči nim a že budou vnímáni jako živí tvorové, kteří si zaslouží naši ochranu. Autor Armin Schieb (*1982) vystudoval obor ilustrace se zaměřením na informativní ilustraci na HAW v Hamburku. Knižní projekt MRAVENCI – Život lesního společenství vznikl jako závěrečná práce jeho magisterského studia. Dnes pracuje jako nezávislý ilustrátor v Hamburku. Zajímají ho obzvlášť vědecká, technická a fantastická témata.
