V lednu 1908 pošle Freudovi jeden účastník vídeňských psychoanalytických středečních setkání svou obvyklou zprávu, jak se vyvíjí jeho téměř pětiletý syn Hans, ovšem tentokrát ne dobrou: Hans má strach, že ho na ulici kousne kůň! Tak začíná historicky první psychoanalýza dítěte, trvající několik měsíců a prováděná netypicky samotným otcem, při několika Freudových radách na dálku a jednom osobním setkání s oběma "kluky" této rodiny. Freudovu roli si chlapec ovšem velmi dobře uvědomoval, a naléhal, aby se "profesorovi" napsalo: zvláště jeho fantazie, uváděné otci jako Hele, co jsem myslel. Prostřednictvím rozvíjení vlastních fantazií se Hans, zdá se, uzdravuje, a když nakonec řekne "Přišel instalatér a nejprve mi kleštěmi odebral zadek a dal mi jiný a potom pipíka. Řekl: Ukaž zadek a já jsem se musel otočit a potom řekl: Ukaž pipíka", chápou to otec a Freud, že Hans zdárně vyřešil svůj oidipský komplex: údajně žárlícího otce (koně) se už nemusí bát, získal od instalatéra větší úd, a vše bude pořádku.
