Práce Josepha M. Davise se zabývá životem a dílem rabína Jom Tov Lipmana Hellera (1578-1654), významného znalce Talmudu, známého svým zájmem o židovskou filosofii, ale také hebrejskou gramatiku, matematiku a astronomii. Heller pocházel z Německa, avšak velkou část svého života strávil v Praze, kde působil jako vrchní rabín. Hellerovo pražské působení ukončilo nejasné udání, na jehož základě byl roku 1629 zatčen a několik měsíců vězněn ve Vídni. Po propuštění na něj bylo uvaleno vysoké výkupné a zákaz působit jako rabín na habsburském území. Davisova práce je výjimečná nejen hlubokou znalostí dobových reálií, ale především schopností zasadit je do širšího kontextu dějin židovské i nežidovské Prahy a celé střední Evropy. Autor zprostředkovává mozaiku detailů poutavým způsobem a podává fascinující portrét rabi Hellera jako hlubokého a všestranného učence, jako odpovědného představitele své komunity, avšak současně také jako člověka, jenž se musí vyrovnat s osobní porážkou, vyhnanstvím a exilem. Česká edice rozšiřuje původní anglické vydání o vůbec první český překlad vlastního životopisu rabi Hellera s názvem Megilat ejva a o studii na téma Autobiografie v židovské literatuře v 16. až 18. století. Zařazeny jsou i překlady několika básní z pera rabiho Hellera a rabiho Šelomo Efrajima z Lencyže, jež doprovází studie Dějinné události v liturgické poezii.

Heller posunul literaturu o druhé světové válce do trochu jiné roviny, kdy se jí snaží zesměšňovat a ukázat její absurditu, přičemž projevuje smysl pro černý humor a ironii. Vladimír Javorský (* 1962) Po studiu herectví na brněnské JAMU působil pět let v Divadle Husa na provázku, poté v roce 1993 nastoupil do Činoherního klubu v Praze a začal hostovat na mnoha dalších scénách, od roku 1999 je stálým členem Činohry Národního divadla. Do paměti televizních diváků se nesmazatelně zapsal díky seriálu Vlak dětství a naděje (1985) nebo rolí „Kyslíka“ v seriálu Chlapci a chlapi (1988) i ztvárněním mima Jana Kašpara Debureaua v koprodukční sérii Největší z Pierotů (1990). Na svém kontě má asi padesát filmových a televizních rolí (např.
