Takzvaná většinová společnost ho ovšem kvůli jeho vzhledu i původu také nechce přijmout takového, jaký prostě je. Paul tedy dennodenně podstupuje iniciaci života - a čtenáři spolu s ním krok za krokem procházejí školou lásky, přátelství, touhy, smrti i utrpení. Navzdory všemu Paul, stejně jako Michel v autorově nejznámějším románu, zůstává nenapravitelným optimistou.
