Tento postoj podstatně ovlivňuje po roce 2004 jeho malířskou tvorbu, v níž se zabývá existenciálními tématy. Jan Paul s literární imaginací i realistickou přesvědčivostí popisuje osobní, partnerské, a společenské konflikty, na jejichž konci sice čeká hrdiny povídek smrt fyzická, profesní i duchovní, nicméně přesah knihy zřetelně odkazuje k naději. V širším kontextu jde o vyjádření mezilidských vztahů, které jsou odrazem prožívání současného světa.
