Narodil se v moravském Příboru v židovské rodině, během jeho raného dětství se rodina přestěhovala do Vídně. Zemřel v londýnské emigraci, kam se uchýlil před nastupujícím nacismem.Vytvořil psychoterapeutickou metodu založenou na pacientových volných asociacích, navázání přenosového vztahu s analytikem a interpretaci snů. Vymyslel či rozvinul řadu pojmů, mezi něž patří libido, stadia psychosexuálního vývoje (orální, anální, falické, genitální), oidipovský komplex, předvědomí, nevědomí a vědomí (topografický model psychiky), id, ego a superego (strukturální model psychiky), narcismus, pud smrti a pud života. Hluboce ovlivnil řadu psychologických, filozofických i antropologických teorií. Stal se třetí nejcitovanější osobou v psychologii 20. století. Slovenský preklad obsahuje okrem slávneho prípadu Anny O. (vlastným menom Bertha Pappenheim) a ďalších, aj príspevok Josefa Breuera, čo umožňuje porovnať odlišné prístupy Breuera a Freuda k podstate hystérie a spôsobom liečenia. Hoci základné pojmy psychoanalýzy a jej dôležité myšlienky v práci ešte nie sú plne sformované a mnohé časom podľahli pretvoreniu, možno ich v nej už nájsť v zárodočnej podobe. Přízračné setkání, které se odehraje v troskách Pompejí v žáru poledního slunce, přinutí Hanolda i čtenáře pochybovat, zdali se jedná o realitu, či sen. Je Gradiva přeludem, nebo skutečnou dívkou z masa a kostí? Může se Hanold spoléhat na svůj úsudek, nebo ho zcela ovládly bludné představy? Jeho italská výprava se tak postupně stává poutí do temných zákoutí vlastní duše a návratem k sobě samému. Novela Gradiva i dlouho po svém vzniku inspirovala řadu literárních a výtvarných děl (mj. Andrého Bretona, Andrého Massona, Salvadora Dalího) a filmů. A zaujala také slavného psychiatra Sigmunda Freuda, který jejímu rozboru věnoval samostatnou studii. "Básníci a spisovatelé jsou cennými spojenci a je třeba si vysoce vážit jejich svědectví, neboť mívají povědomí o řadě věcí mezi nebem a zemí, o nichž si naše školní moudrost může nechat jen zdát," tvrdí Freud v analýze Blud a sny v Gradivě z roku 1907, své vůbec první rozsáhlejší literární studii. Podle zakladatele psychoanalýzy podává Jensen v Gradivě natolik precizní popis rozvoje a terapie bludu, jako by se jednalo o opravdovou psychiatrickou studii. Archeolog Hanold, který podléhá bludným představám, se podle Freuda stává reálným pacientem trpícím neurózou, na němž jeho vysněná dívka Gradiva alias Zoë uskuteční psychoanalytickou léčbu, jako by byla zkušeným psychiatrem. A Hanoldovy sny nejsou podle Freuda ničím jiným než vytěsněnými erotickými touhami, a také proto na ně ve studii brilantně aplikuje metodu známou z Výkladu snů.
