It Can't Happen Here - Sinclair Lewis

''An eerily prescient foreshadowing of current affairs'' Guardian''Not only Lewis''s most important book but one of the most important books ever produced in the United States'' New YorkerA vain, outlandish, anti-immigrant, fearmongering demagogue runs for President of the United States - and wins. Sinclair Lewis''s chilling 1935 bestseller is the story of Buzz Windrip, ''Professional Common Man'', who promises poor, angry voters that he will make America proud and prosperous once more, but takes the country down a far darker path. As the new regime slides into authoritarianism, newspaper editor Doremus Jessup can''t believe it will last - but is he right? This cautionary tale of liberal complacency in the face of populist tyranny shows it really can happen here.

Babbitt? - Sinclair Lewis

Sinclair Lewis' satirical book Babbitt, published in 1922, is about American culture and society and criticizes the superficiality of middle-class life and the temptation to fit in. Babbitt's disagreement had a big impact on the decision to give Lewis the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930. The book has been adapted into two motion pictures: a silent version in 1924 and a talkie version in 1934. Babbitt's life is chronicled in the first seven chapters over the course of a single day. Babbitt coos over his ten-year-old daughter Tinka during breakfast, tries to talk his 22-year-old daughter Verona out of her recent socialist tendencies and exhorts his 17-year-old son Ted to work more in school. He dictates letters while at work and has conversations with his staff on real estate advertising. Babbitt hurries home and abandons all disobedience when his wife develops acute appendicitis. They reestablish their intimacy during her prolonged recovery, and Babbitt returns to his emotionless conformity. In the climactic scene, Babbitt learns that his son Ted secretly wed Eunice, his neighbor's daughter. Though he doesn't agree, he declares that he is in favor of the union and commends Ted for leading an independent life.

Arrowsmith - Sinclair Lewis

Martin Arrowsmith, a young medical student at the University of Winnemac, is driven by a sincere passion and a desire to make a positive contribution to the world. But events get in the way, and a series of personal vicissitudes, love interests and societal pressures threaten to lead him away from the path of pure science – until he is forced, in the face of a humanitarian crisis, to decide between scientific rigour and compassion, between maintaining his medical principles and saving lives.First published in 1925 to great critical acclaim, Arrowsmith is the third major novel by Sinclair Lewis, author of Main Street and Babbitt, and arguably his most ambitious work. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1926 – which the author famously declined – it contributed to Lewis''s growing reputation as a master storyteller, social commentator and the unsurpassed satirist of his time.

Windrip získává násilím kontrolu nad Kongresem a Nejvyšším soudem a pomocí teroru začne Spojené státy proměňovat v totalitní režim.

Can You Forgive Her? - Anthony Trollope

''She loved him much, and admired him even more than she loved him...Would that he had some faults!''Alice Vavasor is torn between a risky marriage with her ambitious cousin George and the safer prospect of a union with the formidably correct John Grey. Her indecision is reflected in the dilemmas of her friend Lady Glencora, confined in the proprieties of her life with Plantagenet Palliser but tempted to escape with her penniless lover Burgo Fitzgerald, and of her aunt, the irreverent widow Mrs Greenow, who must choose between a solid farmer and an untrustworthy soldier as her next husband. Each woman finds her choice bound up with the cold realities of money, and the tension between public expectation and private inclination. Can You Forgive Her? is the first of Trollope''s six Palliser novels, and its focus on the exercise of power, whether in the masculine world of parliament and the professions, or within the domesticities of friendship, courtship, and marriage, signals a new breadth and diversity of interest in his fiction. The Penguin English Library Edition of Alice''s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll''"Curiouser and curiouser!" cried Alice (she was so surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English). "Now I''m opening out like the largest telescope that ever was! Goodbye, feet!"''''I had sent my heroine straight down a rabbit-hole ... without the least idea what was to happen afterwards,'' wrote Lewis Carroll, describing how Alice was conjured up one ''golden afternoon'' in 1862 to entertain his child-friend Alice Liddell. His dream worlds of nonsensical Wonderland and the back-to-front Looking Glass kingdom depict order turned upside-down: a baby turns into a pig, time is abandoned at a disorderly tea-party and a chaotic game of chess makes a seven-year-old girl a Queen. But amongst the anarchic humour and sparkling word play, puzzles and riddles, are poignant moments of nostalgia for lost childhood. The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.

It Can't Rain All the Time - Alisha Mughal

A passionate analysis of the ill-fated 1994 film starring the late Brandon Lee and its long-lasting influence on action movies, cinematic grief, and emotional masculinity. Released in 1994, The Crow first drew in audiences thanks to the well-publicised tragedy that loomed over the film: lead actor Brandon Lee had died on set due to a mishandled prop gun. But it soon became clear that The Crow was more than just an accumulation of its tragic parts. The celebrated critic Roger Ebert wrote that Lee''s performance was ''more of a screen achievement than any of the films of his father, Bruce Lee.'' In It Can''t Rain All the Time, Alisha Mughal argues that The Crow has transcended Brandon Lee''s death by exposing the most challenging human emotions in all their dark, dramatic, and visceral glory, so much so that it has spawned three sequels, a remake, and an intense fandom. Eric, our back-from-the-dead, grieving protagonist, shows us that there is no solution to depression or loss, there is only our own internal, messy work. By the end of the movie, we realise that Eric has presented us with a vast range of emotions and that masculinity doesn''t need to be hard and impenetrable. Through her memories of seeking solace in the film during her own grieving period, Alisha brilliantly shows that, for all its gothic sadness, The Crow is, surprisingly and touchingly, a movie about redemption and hope.

The Mammoth Book of Westerns - Lewis Jon E.

The Western, though a singularly American art form, is one of the great genres of world literature with a truly global readership. It is also durable despite being often unfairly maligned. Ever since James Fenimore Cooper transformed frontier yarns into a distinct literary form, the Western has followed two paths: one populist - what Time magazine famously billed ''the American Morality Play'' - capable of taking many points of view, from red to redneck, but always populist, with a sentimental attachment to the misfit; the other literary - eschewing heroism, debunking with unsettling candour many of the myths of the West. It can sometimes be difficult to draw a sure line between the two forms, but both are represented in this outstanding collection which includes stories by Rick Bass, Walter Van Tilburg Clark, Larry McMurtry, Mari Sandoz, Christopher Tilghman, and Mark Twain, among many others.

Do we have the law we deserve?Has justice improved for the victim, the accused and society? What even is justice?‘Joseph is a natural storyteller.. but what makes it stand out is her point of view.’ The Times'A compelling read' Lady Hale‘A more cerebral version of Kavanagh QC … with sensitivity, suspense and an easy style. New Statesman'Beautifully written, immensely engaging, powerful and disturbing insight into a judge’s work and the choices faced.' Peter James‘If ever I was on trial I would want my judge to be this one.’ Cherie Blair, CBE KCHot on the heels of her Sunday Times bestseller Unlawful Killings, Her Honour Wendy Joseph KC skilfully reconstructs four courtroom dramas, drawing on her many years’ experience as a murder judge to ask whether our justice system works, and if it has improved over the centuries. Have we got any better at delivering what is right and fair to both the perpetrators and the victims of society’s most heinous crimes? From the trial of a child charged with disposing of dismembered body parts, to the woman accused of killing her own husband, Joseph is utterly compelling as she sets out how the system works. But, as she compares these modern courtroom tales with eerily similar cases and miscarriages of justice from years ago, might the most chilling story of all be that the lessons of the past have yet to be learned?Incisive, masterfully crafted, Rough Justice illuminates the struggles of any one of us caught up in our legal system – but particularly the marginalized and the easily exploited – and grapples with the concept of ‘justice for all’ so that we might demand better. ‘The author's wit and wisdom deserve as wide an audience as possible.’ His Honour David Radford‘An author who uses hindsight to contemplate foresight whilst generating genuine insight.’ Professor Dame Sue Black'The criminal law has found its voice: quiet, determined, steely, and yet always humane.’ Justin Webb'A riveting front-line account of our beleaguered courts...Told with clarity and eloquence, it distils an arcane subject with the vigor and pace of a legal thriller.'
