Důvodem jeho uvěznění byl zadržený dopis otci do Ameriky, který svěřil rodinnému příteli, aby ho poslal ze Švýcarska. Svou roli pravděpodobně sehrál i jeho částečný židovský původ. Gerhard Scholten, tehdy ještě nesl otcovo příjmení Pfefferkorn, věznění přežil.
