Do vězení se dostal především kvůli skandálnímu výsledku soudního sporu, při němž vyšla najevo jeho homosexualita, která byla tehdy brána jako přečin proti mravopočestnosti. Jaký div, že tuto společnost kritizoval a vysmíval se jejímu puritánství.
