Při četbě románu jen pozvolna rozhrnujeme závoje mlhy zapomnění a snového oparu, abychom v dálce zahlédli tajemný plamen královny Loany, který září v hlubině nevědomí každého z nás.

Dopis Umberta Eca čtenářům: Devatenácté století překypovalo mnoha tajemnými a strašnými událostmi: nevyřešená a záhadná smrt Ippolita Nieva, Protokoly sionských mudrců, notoricky známý podvrh, který později inspiroval Hitlera k rozpoutání holocaustu, Dreyfusova aféra a četné intriky za účasti tajných služeb rozličných národů, zednářů, jezuitských spiknutí, stejně jako ostatní události, jejichž pravdivost nebyla nikdy prokázána, ale které poskytly bohatý materiál pro 150 let staré fejetony. Kniha Pražský hřbitov je příběh, ve kterém všechny postavy - s výjimkou té hlavní - skutečně existovaly, včetně hrdinova pradědečka, autora záhadného dopisu Abbému Barruelovi, jenž odstartoval vlnu moderního antisemitismu. Jediná fiktivní postava novely (která nicméně připomíná mnoho skutečných lidí, dokonce těch dnešních) se stává autorem rozličných výmyslů a spiknutí, a to vše na pozadí vyjímečného coups de théatre, podzemních stok plných mrtvol, lodí, které explodují v oblasti soptícího vulkánu, opatů ubodaných k smrti, notářů s falešnými vousy, hysterických satanistek, černých mší a podobně. Stejně jako starobylé fejetony i Pražský hřbitov je ilustrovaný. Ilustrace jsou navíc dobové, takže v některých čtenářích mohou vzbuzovat pocity nostalgie a náhlé touhy po starých knihách svého mládí. Očekávám nicméně i další dva druhy čtenářů. Ti první nemají ani zdání, že všechny tyhle věci se ve skutečnosti staly, nevědí nic o literatuře devatenáctého století, a jsou proto těmi, kteří berou vážně dokonce Dana Browna. Ti, se sadistickým potěšením, ocení děj knihy jako snůšku perverzních výmyslů, včetně hlavní postavy, kterou jsem se snažil vytvořit coby nejcyničtějšího a nejnepříjemnějšího hrdinu v historii literatury. Poslední skupina čtenářů ví, nebo přinejmenším cítí, že věci, které líčím, se skutečně staly. Tento čtenář možná ucítí, jak se mu zlehka potí čelo, bude se úzkostlivě ohlížet za sebe, zhasne všechna světla v bytě a pojme podezření, že všechny ty věci se mohou stát znovu, nebo že se dokonce dějí právě teď. A bude si myslet to, co bych rád, aby si myslel: "Jsou mezi námi..."Umberto Eco

Autora Jména růže Umberta Eca odedávna zajímalo, co je živnou půdou zášti. Na základě dobových pramenů vyfabuloval fascinující opus o zlu bez hranic.
