O existenci útržkovitých deníkových záznamů, přibližujících nejbolestivější setkání Václava Havla s represivními složkami komunistické moci, neměl dlouho nikdo ponětí. Sám Václav Havel se o nich nikde nezmiňoval a ani v rozhovorech s nejbližšími se ke své vězeňské zkušenosti příliš nevracel. K jejich objevení došlo až před necelými dvěma lety, kdy David Dušek začal pořádat pozůstalost svého dědečka Zdeňka Urbánka - překladatele, esejisty a celoživotního rádce a přítele Václava Havla. Na podzim roku 1977, po dramatických událostech "roku Charty", sepsal Václav Havel reportáž líčící první hodiny Prohlášení Charty 77, následné vyšetřování, čtyřměsíční vyšetřovací vazbu, kterou na něj uvalil komunistický režim, propuštění a posléze mučivé sebezpytování. Jak Havel uvádí v Dálkovém výslechu, asi stostránkovou reportáž někam ukryl a "už dávno nevím, kde je. Třeba ji někdy najdu". Za svého života už reportáž nenašel, ale objevila se v pozůstalosti jeho blízkého přítele Zdeňka Urbánka, kde ji nalezl jeho vnuk David Dušek. Text, který má do značné míry fragmentární povahu, z největší části zrekonstruovala a nyní vydává Knihovna Václava Havla. V původní osnově, která je součástí rukopisného nálezu, Václav Havel počítal s několika doprovodnými eseji jiných autorů na témata, kterými se v textu zabývá. V tomto duchu je i vydávaný soubor doplněn eseji Anny Freimanové, Petra Blažka, Davida Duška a Michaela Žantovského, který je zároveň editorem celého svazku. Anna Freimanová se zabývá divadelními souvislostmi Havlova textu, zejména zřejmou a přiznanou inspirací k sepsání faustovského Pokoušení.
