Její prvotina Estonský román (Un roman estonien) z roku 2010 vyšla v překladu Heleny Beguivinové v pražském nakladatelství Havran v roce 2015. Podobně jako autorka, i vypravěčka je mladá Estonka, která se koncem 80. let vystěhovala s matkou do Francie. Smrt blízkého člověka ji přiměla zabývat se nejen vlastními vzpomínkami na babičku, která měla daleko do přívětivé stařenky s láskyplnou náručí, nýbrž rodinnou historií v širším měřítku a zejména identitou svého otce, který se narodil začátkem druhé světové války v Estonsku okupovaném Němci. Vzpomínky se prolínají s dopisy, které babičce posílala její přítelkyně, odvlečená na Sibiř v roce 1941 v rámci sovětských represí vůči pobaltskému obyvatelstvu. Dopisy líčí život ve vyhnanství a na nucených pracích, přičemž transport a konkrétní podmínky tamního života, zejména příděl potravin, si v ničem nezadaly se situací v koncentračních táborech. Román se odehrává ve třech časoprostorových rovinách. První popisuje život na Sibiři v letech 1945-1948. Druhý prostor je věnovaný Estonsku, jak ve vzpomínkách na dětství vypravěčky, tak během jejích pozdějších návštěv příbuzných. Třetí románový prostor je vymezený francouzskými hranicemi a vyprávění se odehrává prostřednictvím vzpomínek i líčením ze současnosti. Katrina Kalda i ve svém druhém románu dokázala dovedně skloubit fabulaci s dějinami a reáliemi své původní vlasti, a právě v tom může být pro českého čtenáře přínosem. Kniha byla v roce 2015 oceněna literární cenou Prix littéraire Richelieu de la francophonie.
