Paddy Mayne - Ross Hamish
‘The best biography I’ve read recently’ – Colin Bateman, Sunday Independent''An excellent examination of Mayne… Ross corrects many of the myths about him that have flourished over the years'' - History of War magazine‘This welcome reassessment, officially backed and well-researched, sets the record straight’ – Soldier Magazine‘Paddy’ Mayne was one of the most outstanding special forces leaders of the Second World War. Hamish Ross’s authoritative study follows Mayne from solicitor and rugby international to troop commander in the Commandos and then the SAS, whose leader he later became and whose annals he graced, winning the DSO and three bars, the Croix de Guerre and the Légion d’Honneur.Mayne’s achievements attracted attention, and after his early death legends emerged, based largely on anecdote and assertion. Hamish Ross’s closely researched biography challenges much of the received version, using contemporary sources, the official war diaries, the chronicle of 1 SAS, Mayne’s papers and diaries, and a number of extended interviews with key contemporaries.Ross’s analysis shows Mayne to be a dynamic, yet principled and thoughtful man, committed to the unit’s original concepts. He was far from flawless, but his leadership and tactical brilliance in the field secured the reputation of the SAS, proving he was every bit a rogue hero.

Hamish
This is the lively autobiography of Group Captain Hamish Mahaddie who was at various times a Halton apprentice, bomber pilot, staff officer, station commander and technical adviser to the British film industry. In an animated narrative liberally laced with anecdotes, the author reflects on his formative years in Edinburgh and the part he played in the Trenchard Experiment at Halton in the late 1920s. We follow him to the outposts of the Empire during the 1930s with postings to Egypt and Iraq where he gained his wings. On his return to the UK in 1937, he found a very different Royal Air Force now frantically preparing for the inevitable cataclysm of war which was about to engulf the world.Hamish flew on two tours of operations with Bomber Command in the dangerous night skies over Europe in Whitleys and Stirlings before joining AVM Don Bennett''s Staff at Pathfinder Force HQ. He finished the war as Station Commander at RAF Warboys where he transformed the Sergeants'' and Airmen''s Messes into meccas of popular entertainment with seating liberated from the Globe Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue. At one stage he was the only Station Commander in Bomber Command with an elephant on the strength!Post war, he remained in the RAF and during this time helped introduce the Canberra into Bomber Command service. Upon retirement in 1958 he acted as a technical adviser on various feature films including The Battle of Britain and A Bridge Too Far.This is a well written, entertaining and very interesting account of the author''s varied career in aviation, in peace and war, told by a raconteur par excellence, which will appeal to a wide range of readers.

Melanesia - Hamish McDonald
An immersive journey through the tumultuous past and fascinating present of the south-western Pacific. Stretching from Fiji in the east to New Guinea in the west, Melanesia is astonishingly diverse. Its islands are home to some 1,200 language groups, many of them still isolated from the outside world. This complex region tends to make the news only in times of crisis: military coups in Fiji, Kanak unrest in New Caledonia, rioting in the Solomon Islands. Melanesia offers readers a deeper insight into the people and places behind these headlines, combining travelogue, history and astute political analysis.By land and sea, Hamish McDonald travels from one end of Melanesia to the other, uncovering the histories, values, aspirations and tensions that have shaped the region. He examines the impact of outsiders on local communities: the Indians recruited to work in Fiji; the white ‘blackbirders’ who kidnapped Melanesians to labour in Australian cane fields; the Americans during the Second World War; the Indonesians in New Guinea. And he considers the big changes unfolding today, as shifting demographics and the growing influence of China produce a new balance of power across the region.Vividly written, Melanesia is essential reading for anyone looking to understand this fascinating part of the world and its growing international significance.

Go-Man: Champion of Earth - Steele Hamish
Lonely latchkey kid Tobi dreams of growing up to fight the giant monsters that plague his city, just like his dad does, but when he stumbles upon the power to turn into the colossal superhero, Go-Man, he realizes he’s been wishing his childhood away. Go-Man: Champion of Earth is an action-packed, highly bingeable middle grade adventure series about how one kid overcomes the differences that set him apart from his classmates in order to make friends and save his city. It’s also, at its heart, a story about an autistic kid overcoming neglect in his home. It draws on Hamish’s own childhood experiences and obsessions, making this project very close to his heart. This is not just your ordinary superhero story. The superhero element in Go-Man is a metaphor for masking, the camouflaging behavior that many autistic people employ to suppress their true identity in an effort to conform with those around them. As a superhero, Tobi is more popular than ever! But this masking effort drains him of all of his energy, making him retreat into his bedroom for days. Tobi’s goal is to become someone who doesn’t need his superhero side anymore. He must ultimately learn to love himself as he is, find friends who appreciate him for himself, and finally enjoy being just a kid before it’s too late.

Lost Edinburgh - Hamish Coghill
From mean beginnings – ‘wretched accommodation, no comfortable houses, no soft beds’, visiting French knights complained in 1341 – the city of Edinburgh went on to become one of the architectural wonders of the world. But over the centuries many of its fine buildings have gone. Although invasion and civil strife played their part, some buildings simply collapsed of old age and neglect. Others were swept away in the ‘improvements’ of the nineteenth century; yet more fell in the developers’ swathe of destruction in the twentieth century as shifting patterns of social habits, industry, housing and road systems demanded change on a massive scale. Few buildings were immune as much of the Old Town’s medieval heritage was destroyed, Georgian squares attacked, Princes Street ruined, old tenements razed in huge slum clearances, and once familiar and much-loved landmarks disappeared. In this informative and stimulating book, Hamish Coghill sets out to trace many of Edinburgh’s lost buildings – from imposing city centre edifices to domestic dwellings – and to find out why they were doomed. Lavishly illustrated, Lost Edinburgh is a fascinating insight into a cityscape that has been constantly reinvented over the years, and which continues to develop in the most unexpected and dramatic ways in the twenty-first century.
