Právo útrpné (které je zde uveřejněno vůbec poprvé) autor odevzdal v roce 1964 do nakladatelství Mladá fronta, odkud si sbírku po tři čtvrtě roce "vyžádal zpátky, zdrcen polemikou, která se strhla kolem mého působení v časopise Tvář, trestním stíháním, s ním spojenými neurvalostmi oficialit a také mlčením mnoha přátel". Modlitbu k Janince autor napsal v 70. letech, kdy však již byl doma zbaven publikačních možností. Grušova prvně publikovaná sbírka (Torna, 1962) programově usilovala o zachycení krystalického, imaginativního "života v nás", charakterizuje ji však i smysl pro dětské poetično. Později v Grušově poezii převážila reflexivní lyrická bilance generačního údělu, která posléze vyústila až v sarkastickou filozofii umění, v odmítání konvenčního myšlení a ve fundamentální příklon k existenciální problematice moderního člověka (Světlá lhůta, 1964). Po knížce, ovlivněné mj. i surrealismem (Cvičení mučení, 1969), uveřejnil Jiří Gruša (již v samizdatu) sbírku Modlitba k Janince (1974), deziluzivní básnickou skladbu o traumatické atmosféře 70. let. Doprovodná studie Vladimíra Karfíka postihuje Grušovo místo v kontextu české poezie 60. a 70. let a specifiku jeho básnického výrazu.
