Herkulovy sloupy, za nimiž se podle Platona kdysi nacházela bájná Atlantis, od starověku představovaly symbol geografických i kognitivních limitů: byly považovány za nejzazší západní hranici mořeplavby, za kterou už by lidé neměli dále pronikat.
